GRIM DAWN / FARMING / ADVANCED
XP to 100 (Ultimate)
Push to level 94 through Ultimate quest progression. The top band of Mythical legendaries centers on a level 94 requirement (with some exceptions such as 84), so reaching 94 massively widens your gear options. From there, running Shattered Realm (SR) for gear and XP together carries you to 100 naturally. The Crucible (a separate DLC) offers wave-arena runs as an alternative, and alts typically take a Savior's Merit straight to Ultimate.

CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE
- ▸The baseline: main and side quests on Ultimate toward 94. Point-reward quests cleared on Ultimate also grant any uncollected lower-difficulty copies.
- ▸Why 94? The top band of Mythical legendaries centers on a level 94 requirement (with exceptions such as 84), so 94 to 100 can happen alongside gear farming without rushing.
- ▸From 94, SR runs pay gear and XP together. Pick a depth you clear reliably within the timer - but v1.3.0.0 retuned that timer to run shorter at higher shards, so re-measure the depth you used to farm (see Endgame Money).
- ▸Own the Crucible (separate DLC)? Its wave arena grants XP, Tributes, and gear - even freshly created characters can enter. Since v1.3.0.0 the next tier unlocks not only by clearing waves 1-100 but also by reaching wave 110 or wave 160.
- ▸Alts: a Savior's Merit straight to Ultimate, then progression plus SR (see Difficulties and Merits). Lokarr's Spoils accelerates it further (see Mid XP).
01 / TO-94
Ultimate to 94
Prerequisite: Ultimate unlocked (the Loghorrean kill or a Merit). Progression itself is the XP backbone.
- ▸Clear Ultimate's main and side quests as you go. v1.2.0.0 eased levels 1-50 for Merit users, but the -50% primary resistance penalty applies throughout - keep resistances in mind.
- ▸Skill/attribute point quests cleared on Ultimate also grant the skipped lower-difficulty copies.
- ▸Ultimate's shrines count too - a chance to close the gap to the devotion point cap (see Devotion Basics).
- ▸Level 94 is the central requirement level of the top Mythical band (with exceptions such as 84) - reaching it massively widens your gear options.
- ▸The XP from 94 to 100 accumulates naturally while farming gear; 100 itself needs no rushing.
02 / SR-XP
SR: Gear and XP Together
- ▸SR pays shard-clear rewards (gear, materials) and en-route kill XP simultaneously, making it the main arena from 94 on.
- ▸Pick a farming depth you clear reliably within the timer. For the reward mechanics (2+ shards multiplying chests; rewards only on claim-and-exit), see Endgame Money.
- ▸Your first run starts from the first shard. Progressing to the designated shard and claiming rewards earns the Waystone blueprint; afterward, a crafted Waystone lets you start directly at an unlocked depth (progress is recorded per character and difficulty).
- ▸v1.3.0.0 changed how shard progress is earned, curbing Nemesis-hunting strategies: progress from a Nemesis soul is down 25%, Hero souls give 33% more, Common and Champion souls 50% more, and Champions drop souls 18% more often. Crate framed this as a fix for Nemesis hunting having become too dominant, favoring single-target burst over AoE builds. Builds that clear volume now bank progress more easily.
- ▸v1.3.0.0 also rebalanced the timer, which now runs shorter at higher shards. The timer penalty from deaths is lower, but the kill-streak bonus is smaller too and a streak now needs 25 kills, up from 15. The depth you farmed before v1.2 may no longer run the same, so drop a shard and re-measure when you come back.
- ▸SR shrines no longer consume crafting materials and activate the moment you interact (v1.3.0.0). There is no longer a reason to hoard materials for them - use them as you find them.
- ▸v1.3.0.4 shortened the Black Lodge special level and fixed its missing end boss; killing that boss fills the progress bar.
- ▸FoA adds new regions and boss arenas to SR (stated on the official product page; the individual additions are not itemized publicly).
- ▸XP-per-hour varies with build, depth, and pilot - no figures are guaranteed.
03 / CRUCIBLE
The Crucible (Separate DLC) Alternative
- ▸The Crucible is a separately sold wave-arena DLC: 150 waves at base, extended to 170 with AoM, and thirty more on top of that with Fangs of Asterkarn (FoA) for a total of 200 (the added waves still require the Crucible DLC).
- ▸Three tiers - Aspirant (Normal-grade), Challenger (Elite-grade), Gladiator (Ultimate-grade) - with breaks every 10 waves.
- ▸Challenger and above are not available from the start. Since v1.3.0.0 the next tier unlocks either by clearing waves 1-100 on the preceding tier or by reaching wave 110 or wave 160 (previously only the full 1-100 clear counted).
- ▸On a seasoned account you can instead buy unlock tokens (Challenger's/Gladiator's Merit) from the vendor and pass them to alts via the shared stash.
- ▸Rewards: XP per wave, Tributes (the arena currency, capped at 150), and gear drops from enemies. Since v1.3.0.0, however, failing on the same tier as a checkpoint awards no Tribute.
- ▸Characters are shared with the campaign but progression is independent - even freshly created characters can enter.
- ▸Unlike campaign progression it advances no point quests or shrines, so treat it as the 'just XP and gear' option.
04 / ALTS
The Fast Lane for Alts
- ▸The standard: a Savior's Merit straight to Ultimate, then quests plus SR. Merit use also grants the lower difficulties' points, riftgates, and bags (see Difficulties and Merits).
- ▸Even with v1.2.0.0's eased Ultimate levels 1-50 for Merit users, the -50% primary resistance penalty applies from the start - prep resist components and augments before jumping.
- ▸Wear Lokarr's Spoils (the XP set) from level 1 if you own it (acquisition details in Mid XP).
- ▸A first character simply follows this article's path: Ultimate progression, 94, then SR.
Time through 70-100 varies widely with build and farming choices - no estimates are given. Tribute spending (blessings, defenses) is out of scope here and left to dedicated pages. v1.3.0.0 changed the SR timer and how progress is earned, but the resulting durations and the per-shard reduction were never published, so no figures are given here.

Verification Sources
8- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Legendary Weapons — Confirms Mythicals as upgraded legendaries available with the expansions, with requirement levels of both 84 and 94 - the top band centering on 94.
- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Shattered Realm — Confirms SR's structure, reward mechanics, and Waystone skipping (the same source backing the money-endgame article). The page reflects the v1.2 era, so v1.3.0.0's progress, timer, and shrine changes were taken from the official patch notes instead.
- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Crucible Mode — Confirms the Crucible as a separate DLC, the three tiers, 10-wave breaks, rewards (XP, Tributes capped at 150, gear), and that fresh characters can enter with progression independent of the campaign. The page is from the v1.2 era and still gives 150 waves (170 with AoM) and a wave-100 unlock; both were superseded in v1.3, so official sources take precedence.
- Official Crate Forum: Grim Dawn v1.3.0.0 + Hotfixes — Confirms the Crucible unlock triggering at waves 110 and 160, no Tribute when failing on the same tier as a checkpoint, the SR soul-progress changes (Nemesis -25%, Hero +33%, Common/Champion +50%, Champion soul drop +18%) and their stated intent, the timer rebalance (shorter at higher shards, lower death penalty, smaller kill-streak bonus, streak minimum 15 to 25), and shrines needing no materials while activating instantly. The full patch was read through; only these two Crucible and three SR entries affect this article's mechanics.
- Official Crate Forum: Grim Dawn v1.3.0.4 + v1.3.0.5 — Official patch notes for the verified version (v1.3.0.5 is the latest as of 2026-08-05). Confirms the shortened Black Lodge with its end boss fixed, and references the Crucible's 200th wave (corroborating that wave 200 exists). Only the one SR entry affects this article's mechanics.
- Official Product Page: Grim Dawn - Fangs of Asterkarn — The FoA feature list confirms 'Crucible Expanded - thirty additional waves (requires the Crucible DLC)' and 'The Shattered Realm Grows - new regions and boss arenas'. Thirty on top of AoM's 170 gives 200 waves.
