Mid XP (40-70)

Quest progression stays the XP backbone in the midgame. Since v1.2.0.0, most Normal areas and all Elite areas scale to level 100, so Elite-versus-Normal is a preference call. When your level falls behind, top up with rogue-like dungeons and Monster Totems. On later characters, an XP set like Lokarr's Spoils speeds things up.

CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE
  • The baseline: clear main and side quests on Elite (or continued Normal). Since v1.2.0.0 every Elite area scales to level 100, so progression itself levels you.
  • Torn between Elite and Normal? Both reach the cap now (v1.2.0.0 scaling). Elite applies the -25% primary resistance penalty, so shore up resistances before moving (see Difficulties and Merits).
  • Level falling behind? Bring a Skeleton Key and run a rogue-like dungeon (procedure in Mid Game Money) - XP, gear, and vendor income in one lap.
  • With FG installed, clear Monster Totems as you find them for bundled XP and items.
  • On later characters, wear the XP set Lokarr's Spoils from level 1 if you have it (pieces drop from Lokarr, the superboss at the end of AoM's secret quest - and that quest is Ultimate-only).
01 / PROGRESSION

The Baseline: Progression Paces Your Level

Prerequisite: clear Normal (the Loghorrean kill unlocks Elite/Ultimate) or simply continue Normal. Dedicated farming is only for when you stall.

  • v1.2.0.0's expanded scaling means most Normal areas and all Elite areas scale to level 100 - XP keeps flowing either way.
  • Elite trades the -25% primary resistance penalty for better loot quality. If your resistances aren't ready, continuing Normal is a perfectly viable midgame.
  • Point-reward quests are worth re-clearing on Elite - you gain that difficulty's skill/attribute points.
  • Keep collecting shrines too; Elite's shrines count separately from Normal's (see Devotion Basics).
02 / TRANSITION

Judging the Difficulty Transition

  • The transition test: can you fight through Elite's -25% primary resistance penalty? If your resistances are reasonably filled, go (see the Resistances article).
  • If Elite feels spongy or lethal, dropping back to Normal to re-gear is legitimate - since v1.2.0.0, Normal keeps paying XP.
  • A Merit-boosted alt heading straight to Ultimate still needs resistance and gear prep, even though v1.2.0.0 eased Ultimate's level 1-50 band (see Difficulties and Merits).
  • A difficulty where you keep dying is also an XP loss (death penalty plus grave-marker walks) - one tier down is usually faster in practice.
03 / CATCHUP

Catch-up Routes

  • Rogue-like dungeons: one Skeleton Key per run buys XP, gear, and vendor income at once. Steps of Torment in Act 2 is the accessible pick (procedure and constraints in Mid Game Money).
  • Monster Totems (FG): the clear-as-you-find-them detour - wave clears pay bundled XP and items.
  • Sweeping up unfinished side quests and point-reward quests usually beats plain monster grinding for XP.
  • Time and XP per run vary with spawns and build - no efficiency figures are guaranteed.
04 / XP-GEAR

XP Gear (for Later Characters)

  • Lokarr's Spoils is a light armor set wearable from level 1 whose set bonus increases experience gained - the classic leveling set.
  • Pieces come from killing Lokarr, the superboss at the end of AoM's secret quest - each kill drops one random piece of the four. That secret quest is Ultimate-only, so acquisition requires a developed character who has reached Ultimate.
  • In other words, this is farm-on-your-main, dress-your-next-character gear - never a prerequisite for a first character.
  • Not owning it costs you nothing but time - it is purely a speed-up option.
Time through 40-70 varies with build, difficulty choice, and DLC setup - no time estimates are given. For Lokarr's Spoils' exact bonus numbers, consult the in-game tooltip or the wiki's current values.
