GRIM DAWN / FARMING / ADVANCED
Endgame Money (Ultimate)
Endgame money revolves around Shattered Realm (SR) runs. Rewards arrive only when you choose to claim and exit, and exiting after two or more shards multiplies the reward chests. If your build can't sustain SR yet, farm Nemeses and rogue-like dungeons for gear and vendor income instead. Craft-rolling is a bottomless iron sink - budget it. Note that v1.3.0.0 retuned both the SR timer and how shard progress is earned, so re-measure the depth you farmed before v1.2.

CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE
- ▸The core loop is SR: one shard is three chunks plus a boss chunk, and rewards only appear when you choose to claim and exit.
- ▸To multiply rewards, don't leave after one shard - clear at least two before exiting (the chest count rises dramatically). Running out of timer still lets you finish, but bonus rewards shrink.
- ▸Build not SR-ready? Hunt Nemeses (spawn at 20,000 infamy with a hostile faction; each guarantees its unique MI and has high legendary/blueprint rates) or run rogue-like dungeons (see Mid Game Money).
- ▸Skip the shallow shards with Waystones - blueprints unlock by reaching specific shards, and your deepest shard is recorded per difficulty.
- ▸Craft-rolling (re-crafting the same item for better rolls) has no ceiling - set a budget before you start.
01 / SR-LOOP
The SR Loop
Prerequisites: FG installed and the early-FG choice among the three new factions. After that, the SR entrance NPC in the FG hub is available.
- ▸Structure: three chunks plus a boss chunk make one shard. After each shard you choose to claim rewards and exit, or push deeper.
- ▸Rewards arrive only on exit. Clearing at least two shards before leaving multiplies the reward chests compared to leaving after one.
- ▸The timer (the countdown on the right) affects the bonus reward volume, but running out never prevents completion.
- ▸v1.3.0.0 rebalanced that timer. It now runs shorter at higher shards; the penalty from deaths is lower, but the kill-streak bonus is smaller and a streak now requires 25 kills, up from 15. Stringing together a handful of fast kills no longer carries a run the way it did.
- ▸How shard progress is earned changed alongside it. Progress from a Nemesis soul is down 25%, Hero souls give 33% more, Common and Champion souls 50% more, and Champions drop souls 18% more often. Crate explained it as a fix for clearing shards by hunting Nemesis spawns having become too dominant, pushing single-target burst over AoE. Grinding through the enemies on your route now beats sprinting between Nemeses.
- ▸SR shrines no longer consume crafting materials and activate the moment you interact (v1.3.0.0) - no need to stock up before diving.
- ▸Vendoring the reward-chest gear wholesale is the endgame money engine - legendaries and materials accumulate here too.
- ▸On Ultimate, SR-related NPC vendors sell exclusive set gear - a separate use for the iron you bank.
02 / DEPTH-CHOICE
Choosing Your Depth (by Build Strength)
- ▸Pick a farming depth you can clear reliably within the timer - treat pushing your ceiling as a skill test, not a farming strategy.
- ▸A depth where you keep dying or timing out doesn't pay either; back off until it runs cleanly and speed the loop up instead.
- ▸The optimal depth depends on build, gear, and pilot - we make no iron-per-hour guarantees.
- ▸Since v1.3.0.0 that "depth you clear reliably" line has most likely shifted downward. The timer runs shorter at higher shards and kill streaks need more kills, so the depth you used to farm before v1.2 will not necessarily run at the same pace. Coming back after a break, run your old depth once to see where you actually stand, and if it no longer clears reliably, step shallower until it does before settling into laps. Crate published no figure for how far to drop, so measure it yourself.
- ▸Reconsider how you move inside a shard, not just which shard. With Nemesis souls worth 25% less progress and Common/Champion souls worth 50% more, ploughing through the enemies on your route beats making a beeline for Nemesis spawns. Builds that can handle volume with AoE end up with more timer to spare at the same depth.
- ▸FoA adds new regions and boss arenas to SR (unrelated to Ascendant Mode - installing FoA is enough), and v1.3.0.4 shortened the Black Lodge special level while fixing its missing end boss (killing that boss fills the progress bar).
- ▸Use Waystones to skip the shallow shards and start at your farming depth directly.
03 / ALTERNATIVES
Alternatives to SR
Endgame money works before your build is SR-stable - every option's income core is still vendoring gear.
- ▸Nemesis hunting: these bosses spawn once a hostile faction's infamy hits 20,000 (Nemesis rank). Each guarantees its unique MI drop and has high legendary/blueprint rates - and it works in a base-game-only setup.
- ▸Rogue-like dungeons: a Skeleton Key per run, big payout per lap. AoM's Ancient Grove and FG's deepest one are genuinely hard - pick what fits your build (see Mid Game Money for the procedure).
- ▸Monster Totems (FG): the clear-as-you-travel option. A specific set of Totem-associated legendary weapons (added in v1.1.6.0) has elevated drop chances from Totems - it is not a blanket boost to every legendary.
- ▸Ascendant Mode (FoA; toggled at level 100 on Ultimate): the campaign world itself is enhanced, and troves and chests can appear in upgraded forms. Since v1.3.0.4 the upgraded troves stopped dropping Legendary items and drop more Crafting Materials instead, so they help self-sufficiency in materials more than vendor income (see Crafting Material Routes and Endgame at a Glance).
- ▸In every case the income core is still pick-up-and-vendor - and the rule against selling materials and unlearned blueprints still applies.
04 / SPENDING
Managing the Outflow
- ▸The two big endgame expenses: full augment refits (upgrading to Revered-tier versions) and craft-rolling.
- ▸Craft-rolling has no theoretical ceiling - decide 'X iron for this slot' before you start.
- ▸Keep not-selling materials and unlearned blueprints - rolling burns materials too, so see Crafting Material Routes for restocking.
SR reward contents and craft-rolling outcomes are RNG-dependent - no iron-per-hour figures are guaranteed. Nemesis farming requires the separate prep work of building infamy with the target faction. Crate never published how many seconds the v1.3.0.0 timer rebalance removes per shard, so no exact durations - and no "drop N tiers at depth X" figures - are given here.

- Official Crate Forum: Grim Dawn Version 1.1.6.0 — Confirms the addition of Monster Totems and that the legendary weapons added alongside them are more likely to drop from Totems.
- Official Crate Forum: Grim Dawn v1.3.0.0 + Hotfixes — Confirms the three Shattered Realm entries verbatim: (1) the soul-progress redistribution (Nemesis -25%, Hero +33%, Common/Champion +50%, Champion soul drops +18%) together with Crate's stated reason - Nemesis hunting had become too dominant, favouring single-target burst over AoE; (2) the timer rebalance (shorter at higher shards, lower death penalty, smaller kill-streak bonus, streak minimum 15 to 25); and (3) shrines no longer consuming crafting materials while activating instantly. Since this article's core advice is to pick a depth you clear reliably within the timer, (2) changes the yardstick itself. The full patch was also read through to confirm nothing alters how SR rewards are issued (claim-and-exit only; multiplied at 2+ shards).
- Official Crate Forum: Grim Dawn v1.3.0.4 + v1.3.0.5 — Official patch notes for the verified version (v1.3.0.5 is the latest as of 2026-08-05). Confirms the shortened SR Black Lodge with its end boss fixed, and that the upgraded troves "no longer drop Legendary items, but instead drop more Crafting Materials" (the latter is specific to Ascendant Mode).
- Official Grim Dawn Game Guide: Ascendant Mode — Confirms Ascendant Mode's entry condition (a level 100 character on Ultimate toggles it from the main menu) and that campaign troves and chests can be replaced by upgraded versions.
