GRIM DAWN / SYSTEM
Endgame at a Glance: SR / Crucible / Nemesis
Endgame splits into six tracks: Shattered Realm (SR, part of Forgotten Gods/FG) - the layered-dungeon workhorse for gear and XP; the Crucible (separate DLC) - a wave arena; Nemesis hunting (base game) - powerful Nemesis enemies spawned at 20,000 infamy; Monster Totems (FG) - the clear-as-you-travel option; rogue-like dungeons (3 base + 2 expansion) - Skeleton Key challenges; and Ascendant Mode (Fangs of Asterkarn, FoA) - a toggle that overhauls the campaign world itself. They differ in required DLC and entry conditions, so choose by what you own and how finished your build is.

DO THIS FIRST
- ▸Where to start: Ultimate progression to 94 is the foundation (see XP to 100) - after that, SR runs become the gearing backbone.
- ▸No FG (base game only)? Nemesis hunting and rogue-like dungeons are your endgame pillars.
- ▸Own the Crucible? Its campaign-independent wave runs pay XP, Tributes, and gear - with a devotion-point avenue too.
- ▸Own FoA and sitting at level 100? Toggling Ascendant Mode turns the campaign world itself into your farming ground (see the DLC guide).
- ▸Each track's procedure lives in its own article: SR and depth choice in Endgame Money, Nemeses and Totems in Legendary Farming Basics, rogue-like dungeons in Mid Game Money.
- ▸Whatever you run, the same rules apply: vendor the loot, keep materials and unlearned blueprints.
01 / COMPARISON
The Six Tracks: Purpose, DLC, Entry
- ▸SR: purpose = gear, materials, and XP in one loop. DLC = FG (which needs AoM). Entry = after the early-FG faction choice, via the FG hub. Rewards only on claim-and-exit; 2+ shards multiply the chests. FoA adds new regions and boss arenas, and v1.3.0.0 retuned both shard progress and the timer, so re-measure the depth you used to farm (see XP to 100 and Endgame Money).
- ▸Crucible: purpose = XP, Tributes, gear. DLC = the Crucible (sold separately). Entry = even fresh characters. Since v1.3.0.0 the next tier unlocks by clearing waves 1-100 on the preceding tier or by reaching wave 110 or wave 160 (buying a Merit token also works). Progression is campaign-independent.
- ▸Nemesis: purpose = guaranteed unique MIs plus legendaries/blueprints. DLC = none (works in the base game). Entry = 20,000 infamy with the hostile faction; killing its members triggers a nearby spawn with a proximity message. FoA adds Nemeses for older factions plus new super bosses.
- ▸Monster Totems: purpose = incidental gear and blueprints. DLC = FG. Entry = none - activate them as you find them.
- ▸Rogue-like dungeons: purpose = dense one-lap payouts (bottom boss plus treasure trove). DLC = none for the three base ones, AoM/FG add one each. Entry = one Skeleton Key and reaching the area. One-way, no same-session re-entry. FoA promises two more via free content updates, but no patch note through v1.3.0.5 records them shipping.
- ▸Ascendant Mode: purpose = farming an enhanced campaign world. Monster Totems, treasure troves, and chests can each be replaced by upgraded versions, and it adds a way to ascend equipment one tier further plus a formidable new foe (the Dread). DLC = FoA (which needs AoM and FG). Entry = a character at level 100 on Ultimate can toggle it from the main menu at any time. It is a separate game mode rather than a difficulty - the difficulties are still Normal, Elite, and Ultimate (names and details in the DLC guide).
02 / WHEN-TO-START
When to Start Each
- ▸Rogue-like dungeons and Totems slot into mid-leveling as detours (see Mid Game Money and Mid XP).
- ▸Nemesis hunting needs infamy prep, making it a de-facto Ultimate-band activity - the infamy accrues naturally while farming.
- ▸Serious SR farming starts around level 94 on Ultimate with resistances in order; the first run starts at shard 1 to unlock Waystones.
- ▸The Crucible admits anyone, but unlocking and reliably farming Challenger+ takes a developed build.
- ▸Ascendant Mode comes last. The requirement is level 100 on Ultimate, but the official guide itself notes that difficulty rises significantly above baseline Ultimate scaling and that freshly-100 characters may want to gather gear first. Hitting 100 is not a cue to toggle it immediately.
- ▸When in doubt: the trunk is Ultimate progression to 94, then SR - graft the other branches on according to your DLC.
03 / COMMON-RULES
Rules Common to All Tracks
- ▸Vendoring gear is the income core everywhere; never sell materials or unlearned blueprints (see Endgame Money).
- ▸Efficiency figures (per-hour, lap counts) depend on RNG and build - this site guarantees none.
- ▸The universal rule: farm what you clear reliably, fast. Treat ceiling-pushing as separate from gearing.
- ▸For what your build actually wants (MIs, sets, materials), start from your build page's gear/farming sections.
- ▸FoA's Ascension Altar (in Kurnhold) is not exclusive to Ascendant Mode - it works on every difficulty, so you can enable the individual mechanics without switching modes, at the cost of those same materials empowering monsters (details in the DLC guide).

12- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Shattered Realm — Confirms SR entry (after the FG faction choice), structure, reward mechanics (claim-and-exit; 2+ shard multiplier), and Waystones.
- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Crucible Mode — Confirms the Crucible as a separate DLC open to fresh characters, its rewards (XP, Tributes, gear) plus the devotion-point avenue, Merit-token unlocks, and campaign-independent progression. The page dates from the v1.2 era and still gives wave 100 as the only unlock; v1.3.0.0 added waves 110 and 160, so the official patch notes take precedence.
- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Glossary (Nemesis) — Confirms Nemesis spawn conditions (20,000 infamy) and the guaranteed unique MI plus high-end drops.
- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Factions — Confirms the post-v1.2.1.0 Nemesis spawn model (kill-triggered proximity message and nearby spawn).
- Official Grim Dawn Game Guide: Exploration — Confirms Monster Totems as an FG feature activated as found.
- Grim Dawn Japanese Wiki: Tips — Confirms the rogue-like dungeon lineup (3 base, 1 AoM, 1 FG), Skeleton Keys, one-way design, and no same-session re-entry.
- Official Grim Dawn Game Guide: Ascendant Mode — Confirms Ascendant Mode's entry condition ("Characters playing on Ultimate difficulty that have reached level 100 can toggle Ascendant Mode at any time from the main menu"), that difficulty rises significantly above baseline Ultimate scaling so fresh level 100 characters may want gear first, the Tempest Totem / Resplendent Trove / Marked by the Void / Ascendant's Spoils / Dread / Ascendant-affix mechanics, and that the Ascension Altar in Kurnhold works on all difficulties while inserted materials also empower monsters.
- Official Grim Dawn Game Guide: Game Difficulties — Confirms the difficulties are still Normal, Elite, and Ultimate, so Ascendant Mode is a separate game mode rather than a fourth difficulty. This article deliberately does not assert Japanese names for Ascendant Mode's individual mechanics: the renderings on the Japanese wiki come from a volunteer translation of the Grim Misadventure #183 dev blog dated 2024-07-17 - two years before FoA shipped and not sourced from in-game localization - so this comparison hub describes them by function and leaves naming to the dedicated article.
- Official Grim Dawn Game Guide: Crucible — Confirms the three tiers (Aspirant/Challenger/Gladiator), the continue-or-cash-out choice every 10 waves, and what Tributes buy (checkpoint restarts, Celestial Blessings, Arcane Defenses). Note that its unlock text still reads "defeat the first 100 waves" and has not been updated for v1.3.0.0, so the patch notes take precedence there.
- Official Crate Forum: Grim Dawn v1.3.0.0 + Hotfixes — Confirms the Crucible unlock also triggering at waves 110 and 160, and the Shattered Realm progress and timer rebalances. The full patch was read through: only one Crucible entry and three SR entries touch what this comparison hub asserts; the rest belong to the dedicated articles.
- Official Crate Forum: Grim Dawn v1.3.0.4 + v1.3.0.5 — Official patch notes for the verified version (v1.3.0.5 is the latest as of 2026-08-05). These threads are also where the absence of any shipping note for FoA's two rogue-like dungeons was checked.
- Official Product Page: Grim Dawn - Fangs of Asterkarn — The FoA feature list confirms Ascendant Mode, the new SR regions and boss arenas, additional Nemeses for old factions plus new super bosses, that the two rogue-like dungeons are promised via free content updates, and that FoA requires AoM and FG.
