Farming Monster Infrequents (MIs): The Run Procedure

Monster Infrequents (MIs) drop only from designated enemies - being farmable on purpose is their whole point. The loop: look up the dropper and its location, kill it via the shortest path from the nearest riftgate, then return to the main menu and remake the session to respawn it. Since v1.2.0.0 every boss drops its own MIs (excluding legendary-tier MIs) at 100%, so boss hunts are about what rolled, not whether it dropped. Base stats are fixed and only prefixes/suffixes vary, making affix rolling the real hunt. Stop when your build's recommended affixes are met, running interim rolls and upgrading stepwise. Nemesis MIs also drop guaranteed on every kill. v1.3.0.0 made MIs always drop at the highest level version available to you, and with FoA installed the Ascension Altar lets you bias drops toward a damage type - intervening in the affix hunt itself.

CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE
  • No target yet? Check your build page's gear/farming section for its MIs and locations.
  • Dropper unknown? Search the MI's name in the Grim Tools item DB (lookup details in the Monster Infrequents article).
  • The basic loop: rift straight to the target, kill, return to the main menu, remake the session to respawn. Short laps are total efficiency.
  • When to stop: once your build's recommended affixes are met. Skip perfectionism - run interim rolls and upgrade as you go.
  • Hunting a boss MI? The base drop is certain: since v1.2.0.0 bosses drop their own MIs (excluding legendary-tier) at 100%, and Nemeses are guaranteed every kill too (spawn conditions in Legendary Farming Basics).
  • No need to re-roll for the level version: since v1.3.0.0 an MI drops at the highest level version available in your range.
  • Affixes never matching? With FoA, insert materials into the Ascension Altar to bias drops toward the damage type you want - it overrides the MI's own inherent loot bias.
01 / PREP

Prep: lock in the target and the route

The prep work decides most of your efficiency - confirm three things before running.

  • 1) Pick the MI: start from your build page's gear/farming section. The classic early example is Cronley's Signet from Darius Cronley.
  • 2) Look up the dropper and location: searching the MI's name in the Grim Tools item DB shows its dropper - lookup details live in the Monster Infrequents article.
  • 3) Confirm the shortest path from the nearest riftgate: for hero/boss droppers, lap time decides total efficiency.
  • For family-dropped MIs (not tied to one enemy), farm areas where that family spawns densely.
  • Difficulty affects dropped item level - endgame rolling belongs on Ultimate.
  • Where an MI exists in several required-level versions, since v1.3.0.0 you always get the highest one available in your range (Crate's example: with both a level 84 and a level 94 version possible, you always get the 94). That removes re-running for the higher variant, but it does not let an under-leveled character reach the top version - level up first if that is the goal.
  • FoA added a large number of new MIs, so before locking a target, check whether the MI your build assumes is still the best current option.
02 / RUN-LOOP

Running the loop

  • The base form: rift straight to the target, kill it, grab the loot, return to the main menu, and start a new session (enemies respawn).
  • Killing only the target and leaving immediately is fastest. Trash can be ignored - unless you want money or reputation on the side, then add pickups and kills.
  • If laps feel long, rework the route - and unlock missing riftgates first.
  • Family-dropped and non-boss MIs stay RNG in both spawn and drop, with no lap-count guarantees - while boss MI bases (excluding legendary-tier) are certain, concentrating the RNG almost entirely in the affixes.
  • Locations that offer several MIs, materials, or blueprint chances in one lap are the efficient picks.
03 / AFFIX-HUNT

How to think about affix rolling

The MI's base never changes - each lap's win or loss is purely what rolled on it.

  • An MI's power is fixed base plus random prefix/suffix - rolling means hitting the combination your build wants.
  • What counts as a hit is build-dependent: use your build page's recommended affixes (resistances, skill bonuses, damage lines) as the bar.
  • Ideal rare affixes on both slots are very rare. Treat one-good-affix rolls as stopgaps and upgrade while you keep farming.
  • During leveling, don't obsess over affixes - upgrade speed matters more.
  • With FoA you can move the odds themselves. Inserting materials into the center of the Ascension Altar - unlocked at the Kurn settlement in Asterkarn - biases drops toward the damage type you want, and the official guide states this overrides the inherent loot bias an MI already carries. That is exactly the case of wanting affixes that don't match an MI's native damage. The altar works on all difficulties, though inserted materials also empower monsters (see the DLC guide).
  • v1.3.0.0 fixed MI helms rolling some lower-level-than-intended Magic suffixes at level 70+, so helm rolling behaves more predictably than before.
  • Surplus bad rolls can be vendored; stash only good rolls of the MIs your build depends on (see Mid Game Money).
04 / STOP-AND-MANAGE

Stop conditions and inventory management

  • Stop when a roll meets your build's recommended affixes. There is always a better roll - settle at practical sufficiency and move to the next gear slot.
  • Boss MI bases are certain, so boss hunts are purely about what rolled. Nemeses are guaranteed per kill too, and since v1.1.7.0 their MIs always carry at least one Rare affix - the 20,000-infamy prep is in Legendary Farming Basics.
  • v1.3.0.4 extended that same at-least-one-Rare-affix guarantee to the Dread Mask dropped by FoA's super-boss, the Dread (no official source calls the helm an MI, but kill reports show it dropping with a prefix and suffix).
  • Keep only the roll in use plus upgrade-candidate good rolls in the shared stash and sell the rest - MIs are re-farmable, so don't hoard.
  • Planning a build switch? Keep good rolls of that build's core MIs only, saving a re-farm later.
  • MIs picked up incidentally during Shattered Realm (SR, a Forgotten Gods activity) or Monster Totem (FG) runs get judged by the same bar: keep if the affixes qualify, sell otherwise.
Affix outcomes and non-boss/family MI appearances are RNG-dependent, so no per-hour or lap-count figures are guaranteed. Per-MI recommended affixes are build-dependent and left to the build pages. The magnitude by which altar materials shift drop odds was never published, so no figures are given.

  9. Official Grim Dawn Game Guide: Ascendant ModeConfirms that the Ascension Altar unlocks at the Kurn settlement in Asterkarn, that inserting materials in its center biases drops toward a chosen damage type, that this "will override any inherent loot biases items such as Monster Infrequents already have", that the altar works on all difficulties, and that inserted materials also empower monsters. Japanese names for these mechanics are not verifiable, so English names are used.
