Companion Strength Ranking
We've created a strength ranking based on overall evaluations from domestic and international communities and build sites, considering versatility and pure combat capability. Let's see who holds the key to success on higher difficulties.
S Tier (Top Rated - Party Core)
- Ember: Her hexes, especially the 「Slumber hex」 which ignores enemy saving throws, are the strongest debuffs capable of neutralizing any enemy from the early game to the final boss. She is essential for high difficulty playthroughs. Additionally, she learns powerful fire-based damage spells and healing spells, making her a versatile caster who can handle offense, defense, and support.
- Seelah: A reliable, ironclad tank from the early game. In addition to her high defensive capabilities as a Paladin and damage against evil-aligned foes, her animal companion (horse), which she gains at level 5, boasts exceptional strength. Mounting significantly improves her mobility and survivability, and the horse itself acts as both a tank and an attacker, elevating the party's overall combat power.
- Arueshalae: She possesses top-tier performance as a ranged physical attacker with a bow. Combined with her Ranger class feature 「Favored Enemy」, she deals tremendous damage. Although her recruitment is late, towards the end of Act 2, her value is well worth the wait.
- Daeran: As a pure healer, he is unrivaled. Through his Oracle's 「Life」 Revelation, he can use an enormous number of healing spells (especially 「Channel Life」), dramatically increasing the party's sustained combat ability. He can also cast powerful buffs and summoning spells, making him a perfect support character.
A Tier (Very Powerful - Top Tier in Specific Roles)
- Sosiel: An excellent healer, second only to Daeran. As a Cleric, he can equip medium armor and shields, making him more suited for the front lines than Daeran. His Domain abilities for ally enhancement (especially 「Luck Domain」 and 「Community Domain」) are extremely powerful, boosting the party's overall accuracy and saving throws.
- Wenduag: An alternative to Lann, she is characterized by being easy to build as a pure bow attacker. Her Fighter class features allow her to gain many feats, enabling her to consistently deal high damage.
- Woljif: A hybrid of Rogue and Wizard, requiring careful building but possessing high potential. If he learns self-buffing spells like 「Mirror Image」 and 「Displacement」, he can excel as an evasive tank with an astonishing AC (Armor class). His dual-wielding sneak attack damage is also appealing.
- Regill: An excellent frontline character who balances the toughness and damage output of a Hellknight. While being a gnome presents drawbacks like smaller size and slower movement, his combat capabilities more than compensate for these shortcomings.
Detailed Explanation of Key Companions & Recommended Builds
We will explain development strategies and build examples, focusing primarily on the highly-rated S-tier companions.
Seelah - Paladin of Justice
A reliable tank who joins at the very beginning. With her Paladin abilities and animal companion, she supports the party both offensively and defensively.
- Personal Quests and Affection: Her quests revolve around justice, honor, and confronting her past. Her affection increases by choosing options that are compassionate, help allies, and uphold righteous actions.
- Recommended Builds:
- Pure Paladin: The most stable and powerful build. She becomes a complete tank simply by leveling up. Recommended feats include those that enhance mounted combat, such as 「Mounted Combat」 and 「Spirited Charge」. While a longsword and shield are basic, a 「Greatsword Mounted Build」 that focuses on damage with a two-handed weapon is also powerful.
- Paladin / Skald: After leveling Paladin to 11, multi-classing into Skald allows her to grant the powerful 「Raging Song」 buff to the entire party, improving her support capabilities.
- Mythic Path Compatibility: As a Paladin, she has excellent synergy with the Angel Path, creating both narrative and mechanical synergy. The Gold Dragon Path also aligns well with her character.
Ember - The Pure Witch
Despite her innocence, she devastates enemies on the battlefield as the strongest debuffer.
- Personal Quests and Affection: She tries to save everyone she meets. Quests progress by affirming her kindness and choosing options of forgiveness and mercy.
- Recommended Builds:
- Pure Stigmatized Witch: Since her strength lies in hexes, continuing to level her Witch class is optimal. For feats, 「Spell Penetration」 and 「Greater Spell Penetration」 are recommended to bypass spell resistance, and 「Accursed Hex」 (Mythic Ability often taken to increase Hex DC) to increase the hex's DC (Difficulty Class). The Mythic feat 「Abundant Hexes」 is essential.
- Multi-class Option: If you *must* multi-class, taking one level of Rogue to add sneak attack damage to 「ray」 spells with 「Accomplished Sneak Attacker」 is an option, but it delays the progression of her hexes.
- Mythic Path Compatibility: The Azata Path aligns closely with her philosophy and synergizes well with her debuffing abilities. The Trickster Path is also powerful for further reducing saving throws.
Arueshalae - Succubus Seeking Redemption
A master archer with the unique background of a reformed succubus.
- Personal Quests and Affection: Her quests revolve around confronting her past sins and guiding her towards a path of good. Believing in her, treating her kindly, and showing strong will against temptation can lead to a romance.
- Recommended Builds:
- Pure Espionage Expert: Developing her within her starting class is the most efficient. Through her Ranger combat style feats, she can acquire essential bow feats early, such such as 「Rapid Shot」, 「Clustered Shots」, and 「Manyshot」.
- Ranger / Slayer: Multi-classing into Slayer grants her a damage bonus from Studied Target, further increasing her damage output.
- Mythic Path Compatibility: Narratively, she has a very deep connection with the Azata Path, with dedicated events available. Their mechanical synergy is also outstanding. If you choose the Demon Path, a special route exists where you can corrupt her.
Recommended Party Composition for Beginners
For beginners who are unsure which companions to develop, we recommend a party centered around the following members, who have clear roles and are easy to use.
- Tank: Seelah
The frontline bulwark who absorbs enemy attacks. Her mounted horse also acts as a wall, significantly increasing party stability. - Healer/Support: Sosiel
Supports allies with abundant healing spells and powerful Domain buffs. He can also stand next to Seelah with his medium armor and shield. - Ranged Damage: Lann or Wenduag
Bow attackers who safely reduce enemy numbers from the rear. Both offer straightforward yet high damage output. - Main Character: Flexible Slot (Arcane, Melee Damage, etc.)
Fill any roles the party lacks. A Sorcerer to clear enemies with powerful area-of-effect spells or a Barbarian to fight alongside Seelah on the front lines are recommended. - Remaining 1 Slot: Ember or Nenio
Adding Ember makes combat easier with her powerful hexes. Including Nenio can strengthen the party with arcane support spells like 「Haste」 and 「Illusion」 spells that reduce enemy stats.
This composition of 「1 Tank, 1 Melee Damage (protagonist or horse), 1 Ranged Damage, 1 Healing/Support, 1 Arcane Support/Debuff」 is well-balanced and can handle most situations.
Summary
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous features numerous companions, each with compelling backgrounds and powerful abilities. The S-tier companions introduced in this article, especially Seelah and Ember, can excel in any party composition, so we recommend prioritizing their development if you're unsure.
However, the greatest appeal of this game lies in forging your own story with your unique protagonist. While strength evaluations are merely one guideline, ultimately, prioritize character personality, dialogue, and role-playing compatibility, and enjoy your journey to save the world with your favorite companions. With new companion stories added in the latest DLC 「A Dance of Masks」, your adventure with them continues even after you finish the main game.
