Autocannon and Shield Pack Cannot Be Worn Together
A correction first. This article previously recommended running the AC-8 Autocannon and the SH-32 Shield Generator Pack together as a "best general-purpose build". That loadout does not work. The wiki describes the AC-8 as a support weapon that "includes support backpack required for reloading", and its traits list Backpack. The SH-32's traits are Backpack too. A Helldiver has one backpack slot, so wearing one means not wearing the other.
You can still put both in your four stratagem slots. The restriction is not on selecting them — it is on wearing them at the same time. And in a squad the pairing does work, because a teammate can carry the ammo backpack. Patch 7.0.0 is what made that practical.
Written on 5 September 2026 against patch 7.0.2, using Arrowhead's patch notes and the Helldivers Wiki. Difficulty runs from 1 to 10, and 10 is the maximum (reward multiplier +300% at difficulty 10). The old version of this article treated 9 as the ceiling, which is also no longer correct.
There is one backpack slot
The wiki splits Supply stratagems into support weapons, backpacks and vehicles, and refers throughout to "the backpack slot", singular. The B-100 Portable Hellbomb entry says it occupies the backpack slot of the player when carried; the B-1 Supply Pack entry talks about calling a spare for a teammate who has an empty backpack slot.
| Stratagem | Traits | Occupies |
|---|---|---|
| AC-8 Autocannon | Support Weapon / Backpack / Heavy Armor Penetrating / Stationary Reload | Support weapon + backpack |
| SH-32 Shield Generator Pack | Hellpod / Backpack | Backpack |
So the old pitch — crack heavy armour with the Autocannon while the shield keeps you alive — is not something one player can do. Pick one, or use the squad setup below.
What the AC-8 actually gives you
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Internal magazine | 10 rounds, loaded from 5-round stripper clips pulled out of the backpack |
| Reload time | 4s / 3.55s (with the ship upgrade) / 0.66s per clip when assisted |
| Reload stance | Carrying the backpack yourself means dropping to one knee, immobile, for the animation |
| Resupply | Supplies add 2 clips; a Resupply box adds 5 (10 with Superior Packing Methodology) |
| Spare rounds | 50, in the backpack |
That 0.66 second figure is the whole argument for this weapon. Reloading yourself in 4 seconds and being fed a clip in 0.66 are not the same gun.
7.0.0 made assisted reload worth using
This is the update that changes the answer. Patch 7.0.0, released 12 August 2026, relaxed the requirement for assisted reload.
Previously a designated reloader had to be the one carrying the backpack, and Arrowhead said outright that the coordination cost meant it almost never happened. Since 7.0.0, it works as long as either the wielder or the reloader has the correct backpack.
That is exactly the Autocannon-and-shield question. Hand the ammo backpack to a teammate and the person firing can wear the SH-32. The wiki puts it plainly: the Autocannon's wielder can carry the ammo backpack, but if a teammate assists with the reload and/or carries that backpack instead, team reloading is much faster.
Building around it
Solo and public games: one backpack
- If you wear the SH-32, take a support weapon that does not need a backpack. You take less damage, which lowers the skill floor, and you lean on stratagems for heavy targets.
- If you wear the AC-8, you carry your own armour-piercing answer — but every reload puts you on one knee and immobile. Reloading while surrounded is the failure case, so build the habit of backing off before you load.
Premade squads: the pairing that works
- The shooter calls in the AC-8 and wears the SH-32.
- A teammate carries the AC-8 ammo backpack. Since 7.0.0 this is all that is required.
- Let them load you. 0.66 seconds per clip against your own 4 seconds.
- Agree who takes the Resupply box. One box is 5 clips, or 10 with Superior Packing Methodology unlocked.
This needs actual coordination. It is not something to attempt with randoms.
Other 7.0.0 changes that affect how you play
- Heavy landing recovery is about 40% shorter, cutting the helpless window after a big drop.
- Stim inputs are buffered briefly instead of being dropped when the action is not yet allowed, so healing under fire goes through more often.
- SEAF support appears as a planet modifier, adding friendly NPCs with stim pistols and heavy machine guns.
- The level cap moved from 150 to 300 across 15 new ranks.
Bottom line
The AC-8 and the SH-32 compete for the same slot, and one player cannot have both. Solo, decide which one you want. In a premade, hand the ammo backpack to a teammate and go get the 0.66 second reload. 7.0.0 is what made that second option realistic.
If you copied the old loadout from this page, we gave you bad information. That is on us, and it is corrected here.
