Helldivers 2 Orbital Railcannon Strike: 180s Cooldown
This article reflects patch 7.1.1, released on 24 September 2026 and the newest patch on Steam as of today.
Short answer: the Orbital Railcannon Strike is a single-shot anti-tank stratagem that automatically picks the largest enemy near the beacon. The code is Right, Up, Down, Down, Right, and the base cooldown is 180 seconds. ★And the point most guides get wrong: it does not one-shot Factory Striders or Hive Lords. That is the developer's own wording in a patch note.
Core statistics
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Stratagem code | Right, Up, Down, Down, Right |
| Unlock level | 20 |
| Unlock cost | 10,000 Requisition |
| Source | Orbital Cannons |
| Traits | Orbital, Anti-Tank |
| Call-in time | 0 seconds |
| Uses | Unlimited |
| Base cooldown | 180 seconds |
| Projectile damage | 10,000 (durable damage also 10,000) |
| Explosion damage | 1,000 |
| Penetration | AP7 (direct, slight angle and large angle all 7) |
★About these numbers. The damage and penetration figures come from the change history on the community wiki (helldivers.wiki.gg). That page is stamped "Last Updated 1.006.300". The change recorded under that build — projectile damage 7,500 to 10,000 and durable damage 7,500 to 10,000 — is exactly what the patch notes for 6.3.0 (16 June 2026) describe.
So I pulled the full text of every patch note from 6.3.0 up to the current 7.1.1 and checked. ★The only patch that touches the Railcannon is 6.3.0, and what it contains is the damage change above. Not one of 6.3.1, 7.0.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2, 7.1.0 or 7.1.1 mentions the Railcannon at all. So the move to 10,000 in 6.3.0 is the last change, and the figures above still appear to hold at 7.1.1. The cooldown has not changed across that span either. The cooldown that changed in 7.1.0 was the Orbital Precision Strike, from 90 to 80 seconds, not this one.
What the ship modules do to the cooldown
| Ship module | Effect | Railcannon cooldown |
|---|---|---|
| (none) | — | 180 s |
| Morale Augmentation Bridge | Cooldown of all stratagems reduced by 5 per cent | 171 s |
| Zero-G Breech Loading Orbital Cannons, tier 3 | Cooldown of Orbital stratagems reduced by 10 per cent | 162 s |
| Both of the above | They stack multiplicatively (180 × 0.90 × 0.95) | 153.9 s |
| Targeting Software Upgrade Bridge, tier 1 | Orbital call-in time reduced by 1 second | Does not affect cooldown |
The two cooldown modules stack multiplicatively, not additively. You do not get a flat 15 per cent off. 180 × 0.90 × 0.95 = 153.9 seconds.
★Targeting Software Upgrade does not shorten the cooldown. Its effect is a one-second reduction in call-in time for Orbital stratagems, and the Railcannon's call-in time is already zero. The wiki lists it as a related module, but the two above are what actually cut the wait.
★What dies to one shot, and what does not
This is the table that decides your loadout. It reproduces the tactical notes on the community wiki.
| Target | Dies to one shot? |
|---|---|
| Bile Titan | Yes |
| Impaler | Yes |
| Charger | Yes |
| Hulk | Yes |
| Tank | Yes |
| Dragonroach | Yes |
| Cannon Turret | Yes |
| Vox Engine | Yes |
| Dropship | Destroyable if the timing is right |
| ★Factory Strider | No. It takes heavy damage, but its top is not a weak spot, so the body survives and only the Cannon Turret is destroyed |
| ★Hive Lord | No |
| ★Leviathan | Cannot be targeted at all (see below) |
★"It will not one-shot the largest enemies" is the developer's phrasing. In the 6.3.0 notes, after explaining why the damage went from 7,500 to 10,000, they wrote:
"It will still not one shot the largest enemies like Factory strider, Hive lord and similar."
★The Leviathan is a different case. The wiki states that the Orbital Railcannon cannot target Leviathans, and adds that whether this is intentional is unclear. That is not "it survives the hit" but "it never becomes the target". I cannot settle which it is, so the wiki's wording is passed on as it stands.
How the auto-targeting works, and when it misses what you wanted
The in-game description reads "A high-velocity railcannon round fired at the largest target in close proximity to the beacon. Targeting is automatic." There is no aiming step. Where you throw the beacon is the aim.
- The round is so precise that it rarely hits more than one enemy, because the things it picks are larger than its tiny area of effect. It is not a crowd-clearing tool
- It nearly always hits the centre of mass of whatever it targets, so there is no weak point to line up
- With no viable enemy nearby it switches to structures: Terminid Bug Holes, Spore Spewers and Shrieker Nests, or Automaton Fabricators
- With none of those either, it hits the exact spot where the beacon landed
- The projectile is the fastest in the game at Mach 40.82, per the wiki, so impact follows the throw almost immediately
★Dumbfiring it into Detector Towers and Jammers
The Railcannon can destroy Detector Towers, Stratagem Jammers and Rogue Research Stations. The catch is that it cannot lock onto any of them, so you have to deliberately leave it nothing else to shoot.
- Clear the enemies around the objective first. Anything alive nearby will be picked instead
- ★Make sure there is no valid target within 25 metres of the beacon. The wiki gives that radius. Bug Holes and Fabricators count as valid targets too, not just enemies
- Throw with that cleared, and the round hits where the beacon landed. That is the "dumbfire"
- Land the beacon on the structure itself. With no aiming step, the impact point is wherever the beacon ends up
The flip side is that you cannot use it on structures mid-fight, because it will always prefer a live enemy. Save it for a quiet moment.
Where it earns its slot against each faction
- Terminids: it one-shots Bile Titans and Chargers. It does not kill Hive Lords, so bring a second anti-tank answer on missions where one appears
- Automatons: it one-shots Hulks, Tanks and Cannon Turrets. ★Against a Factory Strider it only removes the Cannon Turret, leaving the body for something else
- Illuminate: it one-shots Vox Engines. The 6.3.0 developer commentary names Vox Engines as a reason for the damage increase. It cannot target Leviathans
The planning rule is simple. The Railcannon deletes one large target reliably and then sits on a 180-second cooldown. So pair it with something that handles crowds, and with an answer to the things it cannot kill — a Factory Strider's body and a Hive Lord.
Summary
- Code is Right, Up, Down, Down, Right; unlocked at level 20 for 10,000 Requisition
- Base cooldown 180 s. Zero-G Breech Loading takes it to 162 s, Morale Augmentation to 171 s, both together to 153.9 s (multiplicative)
- ★Factory Striders and Hive Lords do not die to one shot, stated in the 6.3.0 patch notes
- ★Leviathans cannot be targeted; the wiki says it is unclear whether that is intended
- Bile Titans, Chargers, Hulks, Tanks and Vox Engines all die to one shot
- ★To break a structure, leave no valid target within 25 m of the beacon
- The source wiki page is stamped build 1.006.300; the 10,000 damage change in 6.3.0 is the last one, and nothing from 6.3.1 to 7.1.1 mentions the Railcannon
