Diablo 4 Season 15 Rebirth: Empty Your Character First
Short answer: you cannot start Rebirth until the character is completely empty. Blizzard states it plainly — Rebirth cannot be performed unless the character has nothing equipped and no items in their inventory. Trying to run it with gear still equipped simply will not proceed, so empty the character first.
This reflects the official wording for patch 3.2.1, Build #73552. Blizzard dates it 15 September 2026 on the English page and 16 September 2026 on the Japanese one.
What Rebirth actually does
It converts an Eternal Realm character into a Seasonal one. The character moves to the Seasonal realm and resets to level 1.
The point is that you no longer have to roll a fresh character every season — you can continue an existing Eternal character's story in the Seasonal realm instead. Hours played are not wiped; they keep accumulating across Rebirths.
What carries over
- Class
- Name
- Appearance
- State (Normal or Hardcore)
- Cosmetic preferences saved as part of an ensemble — transmogs, pigments, mounts and accessories, pets, portals and headstones
Note the condition on cosmetics: they carry over when saved as part of an ensemble. Blizzard does not say what happens to anything not saved that way, so save the look you want before you rebirth.
What does not carry over
- Level — it resets to 1
- Gear and inventory — the character has to be empty before Rebirth will even run
The order to do it in
- Save the appearance you want to keep as an ensemble. That is the stated condition for cosmetics carrying over
- Unequip everything — weapons, armour and jewelry included
- Move every item in the bag to your Eternal stash. Blizzard's instruction is to move all items there before using Rebirth so that gear and items are not lost
- Run Rebirth. You get a warning first that retained items will be lost, and you are given the choice to move them or destroy them
Things worth knowing first
- You cannot "just try it". An empty character is a precondition, not a warning, so do steps 2 and 3 first
- Do not pick "destroy" on the warning screen. Moving sends items to the stash; destroying is not reversible
- Check you have stash space beforehand. A full stash stops you at step 3
- Hardcore state carries over too. Confirm which character you are converting before you commit
Rebirth or a new character?
Both start at level 1. The difference is that Rebirth carries the class, name, appearance, Normal/Hardcore state, ensemble-saved cosmetics and accumulated playtime across, while a new character carries none of it.
- You want to play the season as a character you are attached to, or keep building playtime → Rebirth
- You want to play a different class → Rebirth cannot change your class. Class is one of the things it carries over, so a new character is required
- You would rather skip unequipping and emptying the bag → a new character avoids that step entirely
What to read next for Season 15
Once Rebirth has put you in the Seasonal realm, these cover the season-specific systems. All were checked against patch 3.2.1.
- Season 15: Season of Hell's Legacy overview — how to start and how the questline runs
- How to choose and switch Splinters of Evil — Terror, Destruction and Hatred, and the activities each one modifies
- Waking Nightmares: the three types — and which one lets you swap Splinters
What this guide does not cover
The official season overview does not state the following, so they are not asserted here.
- Whether Rebirth is specific to Season 15 or a permanent feature. It is introduced within the season overview, but Blizzard does not say it persists
- Which in-game menu you run it from. No screen or navigation is described
- What happens to cosmetics not saved as an ensemble.
- What becomes of a reborn character once the season ends.
