GRIM DAWN / CLASSES
Demolitionist - Fire, Lightning, and Explosives at Range
A ranged-leaning mastery of guns and bombs, built on fire and lightning with chaos, physical, and pierce available too. Deep area damage and crowd control make it strong against packs, and Fire Strike works with either melee or ranged weapons. The catch: Blast Shield is its only true defensive skill, and it scales health and Defensive Ability poorly.

AT A GLANCE
- ▸Struggling with packs? This is one of the most direct answers in the game, through deep area damage and crowd control.
- ▸Undecided on weapon type? Fire Strike replaces your default attack and works with either melee or ranged weapons, and its upgrades turn it into an area attack.
- ▸Feeling fragile? Blast Shield is the only true defensive skill, and there are no resistance or health passives. Lean on crowd control, enemy damage reduction, and Offensive Ability debuffs, or cover defense with the second mastery.
- ▸Want sustain? Vindictive Flame gained a health regeneration buff, and the automatic retaliation skill Ulzuin's Wrath now carries attack damage converted to health by default - builds are built around both.
- ▸Worried about having no exclusive skill? Demolitionist has none, but its two permanent buffs are strong enough that it rarely matters in practice.
01 / WHAT-IT-DOES
What It Does Well
Officially framed as imperial pyrotechnic masters who are "part engineer and part sorcerer" - they prefer to engage at range with guns, traps, and explosives, but can also be proficient with melee weapons.
- ▸Fire and lightning lead, with physical, pierce, and chaos as secondaries - and passives scale them cleanly.
- ▸As a fighter: Fire Strike replaces the default attack, hits hard, and becomes an area attack through its upgrades, with either melee or ranged weapons.
- ▸As a caster: thrown area skills and placed skills cover a wide range of situations.
- ▸Crowd control: Stun Jacks, Flashbang, and others give several ways to stop enemies acting.
- ▸Support: Flame Touched also buffs pets and party members.
- ▸Resistance reduction: it can reduce elemental (fire, cold, lightning) plus aether and chaos resistance in the convenient category B (see the Resistance Reduction article).
02 / STRENGTHS-WEAKNESSES
Strengths and Weaknesses
- ▸Strength: high pack-clearing throughput from deep area damage, plus survivability through extensive crowd control.
- ▸Strength: a wide mix of offensive and support skills that suits many builds.
- ▸Strength: plenty of good hosts for devotion procs, with damage types and cooldown/proc rates that line up well.
- ▸Weakness: thrown attacks are easily blocked by terrain and enemies, and cost a lot of energy.
- ▸Weakness: on its own it scales health, Defensive Ability, and energy regeneration poorly.
- ▸Weakness: outside the temporary Blast Shield buff, it has no way to raise resistances and no damage absorption.
03 / PAIRING
Choosing a Partner and Getting Started
The first mastery comes at level 2 and the second at level 10. Since Demolitionist already covers offense and utility broadly, the natural ask from a partner is defense.
- ▸Soldier: brings armor, health, shield block, and damage absorption - exactly the defensive layer Demolitionist lacks.
- ▸Occultist: adds resistance and Defensive Ability passives plus strong debuffs, and its chaos damage lines up as well.
- ▸Arcanist: shares the elemental damage types while adding a percentage damage reduction buff and an emergency evade for durability.
- ▸Spend attributes only up to gear requirements and put the rest into Physique (see the Attribute Points article).
- ▸Skill allocation can be respecced at the Spirit Guide at any time (see the Respec article).
SYNERGY
Pairs Well With
3Soldier
Supplies armor, health, shield block, and damage absorption, covering the fact that Blast Shield is Demolitionist's only defensive skill.
Occultist
Adds resistance and Defensive Ability passives for durability, while its strong debuffs and chaos damage line up with Demolitionist's own.
Arcanist
Shares elemental damage so offense can be unified, and adds a percentage damage reduction buff plus an emergency evade to shore up durability.
