Arcanist - The Pure Caster: High Damage, the Thinnest Base Durability
A pure caster built on elemental (fire, cold, lightning) and aether. It has the passives casters want - cast speed, energy cost reduction, damage scaling - and raises its own Spirit, Offensive Ability, and critical damage. It has the lowest Physique of any mastery and no health-scaling skills, so it dies easily early; once its permanent buffs and emergency evade are online, durability follows.
- ▸Dying constantly? Arcanist has the lowest Physique in the game and no skills that raise health or Physique at all - build assuming gear, devotion, and the second mastery will cover it.
- ▸Want durability back? It has a permanent buff that reduces all incoming damage by a percentage plus a buff that triggers at low health, and with enough cooldown reduction, builds can lean on a timed invulnerability skill.
- ▸Damage plateauing? Arcanist has almost no resistance reduction that works on bosses - cover it with the second mastery, devotion procs, or gear affixes (see the Resistance Reduction article).
- ▸Hit by Sunder? This debuff was added to enemy attacks in v1.2, and Arcanist can react to it with its emergency evade and its buff/debuff removal - the only such removal in the game.
- ▸Energy problems? Not here - high Spirit plus permanent buffs and passives make energy supply a strength.
What It Does Well
Officially described as those who treat magic as a science to be unraveled - warping aetherial and elemental energy into demonstrations of power that rival small armies, while such raw force leaves little in terms of defense.
- ▸Damage: every attack skill hits hard enough for a caster - though the high-tier ones take a long time and a lot of skill points to reach.
- ▸Self-contained scaling: Spirit (which boosts elemental damage), the Offensive Ability that criticals need, and critical damage multipliers are all raised by the mastery itself.
- ▸Area damage: two each of piercing, falling, and nova-type skills give wide area coverage.
- ▸Energy: high Spirit plus permanent buffs and passives supply energy generously.
- ▸Utility: the only buff/debuff removal in the game, letting it react to strong debuffs such as the Sunder added in v1.2, alongside its emergency evade.
- ▸Exclusive skill: one that reduces cooldowns across all skills.
- ▸Attribute growth: Physique 1 / Cunning 2 / Spirit 4.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- ▸Strength: percentage passives plus flat bonuses from a permanent buff line secure high Offensive Ability.
- ▸Strength: a permanent buff tree that raises defense against both damage and status effects, and a genuinely convenient emergency evade.
- ▸Weakness: few attack skills carry a weapon-damage component, so debuff-on-hit effects and attack damage converted to health are hard to use.
- ▸Weakness: the lowest Physique of any mastery and no health or Physique skills, hence low health.
- ▸Weakness: little self-sourced resistance reduction - only the effect attached to freeze and Distortion.
- ▸Weakness: no way to reduce enemy Offensive or Defensive Ability.
- ▸This list follows the Japanese wiki's Arcanist page and can change with patches.
Choosing a Partner and Getting Started
Arcanist's two holes are durability and resistance reduction. The early-game impression of "lots of damage, dies instantly" is exactly as designed, and it resolves as skill points and gear accumulate.
- ▸Soldier: armor, health, and shield block directly cover the lowest-Physique problem.
- ▸Inquisitor (AoM): shares elemental damage while supplying both the resistance reduction Arcanist lacks and instant healing plus defensive skills.
- ▸Demolitionist: shares fire and lightning and brings category B resistance reduction plus crowd control.
- ▸Fill resistances from gear and components first - see the Resistance Fix Lookup article for what is short and by how much.
- ▸Skill allocation can be respecced at the Spirit Guide at any time (see the Respec article).
