Wilds Sword & Shield Guide: Combos & Perfect Rush
This guide reflects the official stable build, Ver.1.042.00.03 (released October 27, 2026 UTC). That update fixed an AMD crash and some network errors; it contained no Sword & Shield changes (checked against the official Steam update summary).
Short answer: Sword & Shield rewards picking the move that fits the opening. Use Backstep into Perfect Rush for big openings, Charged Chop for small ones, and the shield combo when you want a stun. You can also use some items with the weapon drawn, so healing and support never force you to sheathe.
This page cross-checks move names, combo flow and patch history against official update notes and two community sources (Game8 and the Fextralife Wiki). I could not verify motion values or DPS numbers, so I do not claim any single combo is the strongest.
What Sword & Shield does well
- Cut and blunt damage in one weapon: Capcom's own weapon overview describes it as using the strengths of both. The sword cuts; the shield builds stun.
- Fast and mobile: quick attacks, a fast sheathe, and a Backstep with a long invincibility window (per Game8).
- Items while drawn: some items can be used with the weapon out, including right after taking a hit.
- Short reach: you fight close to the monster, and high body parts can be out of range.
Core moves to know
Names below follow the Fextralife Wiki and the official patch notes. Buttons are PlayStation 5 notation from Game8; check the in-game controls list for your platform.
| Move | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Backstep | Long invincibility window; leads straight into Perfect Rush. Can also be used mid-combo. |
| Perfect Rush | Multi-hit attack out of a Backstep that builds element and status easily. Press the button when your hunter flashes red (△ on PS5) for more damage. |
| Charged Chop | New leaping attack in Wilds. Hits several times when it lands on a soft spot. Hold the two attack buttons (△ and ○ on PS5) during a combo. |
| Shield Attack / Shield Bash / Hard Bash | The shield strings that build stun. Aim at the head. |
| Sliding Swipe | Closes distance quickly. Game8 notes the Lateral Slash that follows it hits hard. |
| Perfect Guard, then Counter Slash | A well-timed guard cancels knockback and opens a counter. Repeated Perfect Guards can trigger a power clash. |
| Falling Bash | A shield slam from midair that builds stun. |
Which combo for which opening
| Situation | Sequence | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Big opening | Backstep, Perfect Rush, Falling Bash | Element/status buildup and stun |
| Small opening | Attack, then Charged Chop | Strong damage in a short window |
| Stun | Shield Attack, Shield Bash, Hard Bash, Spinning Reaper | Head stun value |
| Wound present | Focus Mode, Focus Strike: Vital Stab, follow-up | Break the wound, possible knockdown |
If you are new to the weapon, learn it in this order:
- Dodge with Backstep.
- Right after the dodge, throw Perfect Rush (press the button when your hunter turns red, △ on PS5).
- For small openings, attack and finish with Charged Chop.
- Try the shield combo when you can hit the head.
Big opening: Backstep, Perfect Rush, Falling Bash
Use it right after dodging an attack or when the monster is down. You can finish with the Falling Bash button (builds stun) or the standard finisher. Game8 warns that the Falling Bash finish launches you into the air and can miss if the monster moves, so use the standard finisher when you need the damage to land.
Small opening: attack, then Charged Chop
Game8 rates Charged Chop as more efficient than Perfect Rush at the moment, and appmedia.jp recommends Charged Chop for small gaps and Perfect Rush for big ones. I found no numbers that settle which deals more damage, so treat this split as a reasonable starting point rather than a ranking.
Stun: Shield Attack, Shield Bash, Hard Bash, Spinning Reaper
Aim for the head. According to Game8, once a monster has been stunned it becomes harder to stun again, so the opening stun is the one to go for. If the monster is down, you can add a Charged Chop at the end for damage.
Safe, free attacks: the Roundslash loop
Game8 describes a loop built around Roundslash that can out-damage Perfect Rush when the monster is not hitting back. Roundslash needs a left or right stick input, so expect some practice.
Focus Strike: Vital Stab
Sword & Shield's Focus Strike stabs a wound and latches onto the monster. It is how you break wounds for damage and a possible knockdown.
- Reach is short. Get into position so the stab lands on the red wound; wounds high on the body are often out of reach (Game8).
- After it connects you can follow up with a Falling Slash or an upward shield bash (Fextralife Wiki).
- If you must land the finish, Game8 recommends the standard finisher over the airborne one.
Advanced options
- Branch out of a Perfect Guard into Counter Slash, Charged Chop, Lateral Slash, a shield attack or a Backstep (Game8).
- Use the Roundslash loop when the monster cannot hit back.
- Add a Charged Chop to the end of the shield combo while the monster is down.
Balance history (official update summaries)
These are the updates that mention Sword & Shield. Searching the official Steam announcements for "Sword & Shield" turned up no other versions with changes to it.
| Version | Sword & Shield changes |
|---|---|
| Pre-launch (Dec 2024) | Rising Slash can be used while guarding; basic combos and Perfect Rush improved in response, damage and hitstop. |
| Ver.1.011 | Two Focus Strike bug fixes (continuous slashing while falling on certain terrain; Arch-Tempered Rey Dau failing to topple). Not a balance change. |
| Ver.1.020 (Title Update 2) | Shield Attack, Shield Bash and Hard Bash damage and stun slightly up. Perfect Rush finisher damage slightly up. Guard Slash harder to chain into itself. Sliding Swipe invincibility slightly shorter. Chop and Side Slash damage slightly up; Counter Slash damage down. |
| Ver.1.021 | Counter Slash damage up (the director's letter says this compensated for Counter Slash being used less after the Guard Slash change). |
| Ver.1.040 | Perfect Rush hitbox adjusted. Forward Slash damage up and smoother into Lateral Slash. Perfect Guard returns to a normal guard and connects to Lateral Slash slightly faster. |
| Ver.1.041 / 1.042.00.00 | Radial-menu bug fixes while the weapon is drawn (items briefly disappearing; traps not placeable right after Focus Mode). No combat changes. |
One discrepancy: the Fextralife Wiki's patch list says Chop and Side Slash damage was decreased in Ver.1.020 and Sliding Swipe's evade window was increased. The official Steam summary says slightly increased and slightly shorter invincibility, so this guide follows the official notes.
Not the same as Ascendance's Boosted Actions
Capcom has shown Boost Bracer actions for Sword & Shield, such as Bladecoating Slash and Boosted Lunge, for the Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion, planned for 2027. They are separate from the base-game moves above and are not covered in the combos here.
What I could not verify
- Motion values and a numerical DPS comparison between Perfect Rush and Charged Chop.
- Whether the move names match in-game text exactly (not checked in the game).
- Button layouts other than PlayStation 5.
