MH Wilds Long Sword Build: Best Skills and Armour Set

SHAREXFacebookLINE

Short answer: a solid general-purpose Long Sword set can be built around three raw-attack skills — Agitator, Resentment and Counterstrike. The Long Sword has hyper armour on moves such as the Spirit Thrust and the Spirit Release Slash, so it absorbs a hit without losing the attack, which means it can satisfy the damage-taken triggers while still landing damage. This is not a claim that affinity skills are weak — the set below runs Maximum Might, Critical Eye and Critical Boost alongside them. All values and gear names are as of Ver.1.042.

Verified on 1 September 2026 against Ver.1.042. Monster Hunter Wilds released on 28 February 2025, and the free title updates concluded with Ver.1.041. Every skill value and every piece of gear named below was confirmed to exist in the Kiranico database (Game Ver. 1.040); the set composition follows Game8's Long Sword gear pages.

What the attack skills are actually worth

Here are the real values for the skills this set is built on, with the affinity skills alongside for comparison.

SkillMax LvAt maxCondition
Agitator5Attack +20, affinity +15%While the monster is enraged
Resentment5Attack +25While you have recoverable (red) health
Counterstrike3Attack +25, extended durationAfter being knocked back
Maximum Might3Affinity +30%While stamina is full
Critical Boost5x1.40 physical damage on criticalsOn a critical hit
Critical Eye5Affinity +20%Always

Agitator alone is +20 attack and +15% affinity at Lv5, Resentment is +25 at Lv5, and Counterstrike is +25 at Lv3. With all three active that is +70 attack from skills alone — though every one of them is conditional, not permanent.

To be clear, this is not an argument that raw attack beats affinity in general. Game8 rates affinity skills such as Weakness Exploit, Maximum Might and Agitator among the highest priorities, and the set below runs Maximum Might Lv3, Critical Eye Lv3 and Critical Boost Lv5. The point here is narrower: these three fit how the Long Sword actually plays, which makes them a natural spine for this particular set.

Why this suits the Long Sword specifically

Counterstrike and Resentment both require taking damage. Normally that fights against clean play — but the Long Sword is a special case.

Moves such as the Spirit Thrust and the Spirit Release Slash carry hyper armour, so a hit taken mid-animation does not interrupt the attack. In other words you can land the attack and satisfy Counterstrike's trigger at the same time. Game8 makes the same point: Counterstrike fires from hits absorbed during those hyper-armour moves, which is why it pairs so well with this weapon.

Focus Mode and the Spirit Gauge loop

Before the skills, the damage cycle. The Spirit Gauge fills as you land hits, and spending it on the right attacks moves its colour up through white, yellow and red. Red is a large attack boost, and holding it there is the goal.

Focus Mode is the efficient way to climb those stages. Hold L2 to enter it, then press R1 for the focus strike, Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust. Landing it on a wound raises the Spirit Gauge colour by one stage, and the attack then flows into Spirit Blade III and the Spirit Roundslash — so a single sequence can climb two stages.

How to create wounds in the first place is covered in the Focus Strike guide, and the basic combos are in the Long Sword guide.

A general-purpose damage set

This is the high-damage set Game8 lists, built around series skills. Every piece was checked against Kiranico.

Skills it produces

Armour skills: Agitator Lv5, Resentment Lv5, Counterstrike Lv3, Maximum Might Lv3, Quick Sheathe Lv3, Antivirus Lv3, Constitution Lv2, Weakness Exploit Lv1, Burst Lv1, Flinch Free Lv1

Weapon skills: Critical Boost Lv5, Critical Eye Lv3, Critical Draw Lv1, Master's Touch Lv1

Series skills: Nu Udra's Mutiny I, Gore Magala's Tyranny I, Leviathan's Fury I, Lord's Soul

The three raw-attack skills are maxed or near-maxed, while affinity comes from Maximum Might Lv3 and Critical Eye Lv3 with Critical Boost Lv5 raising the multiplier. Weakness Exploit sits at Lv1 deliberately: as covered in the damage skill priority guide, its only decoration is the slot-3 Tenderizer Jewel granting a single level, so it is not worth crowding the build for.

Priority order while gearing up

  1. Agitator — monsters spend a large share of a hunt enraged, so it behaves almost like a permanent buff, and it gives both attack and affinity
  2. Critical Boost — the more affinity you have, the more it returns. A Critical Jewel in the weapon's slot is the default opening
  3. Counterstrike and Resentment — hyper armour lets the Long Sword meet the damage condition without giving up the attack
  4. Quick Sheathe — if you play around sheathing into the Iai Spirit Slash, take it to Lv3. Not a damage skill, but it drives the weapon's tempo
  5. Maximum Might and Critical Eye — fill whatever affinity gap is left

Sharpness skills — Handicraft, Razor Sharp and Master's Touch — are also rated highly for the Long Sword. Damage skills stop mattering once sharpness drops, so plan to spend slots there.

Weapon options

  • Headsman's Hamus — the Artian weapon used in the set above: attack 247, element 350, affinity 0%
  • Heaven's Thunder — a Thunder Long Sword from Lagiacrus materials. Paired with Convert Thunder Resistance, raising your Thunder resistance pushes its Thunder attack up sharply
  • Lala Ornithocton — a craftable Paralysis Long Sword. A fully rolled Artian paralysis weapon eventually beats it, but among craftable options it is a strong pick

Summary

  • This set is built on Agitator, Resentment and Counterstrike, with affinity skills alongside them
  • Agitator Lv5 gives +20 attack and +15% affinity, Resentment Lv5 gives +25, Counterstrike Lv3 gives +25
  • The damage-taken conditions line up with the hyper armour on Spirit Thrust and Spirit Release Slash
  • Landing Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust on a wound raises the gauge one stage, and the follow-up can reach two
  • Weakness Exploit only comes one level at a time from a slot-3 decoration, so do not crowd the build for it
  • Sharpness skills matter here too — plan slots for them

Skill values were confirmed against Kiranico's skill index, and each gear name against its own Kiranico page — the weapon, the Lagiacrus β and Nu Udra γ and Gore β series, the charm, and the Heaven's Thunder and Lala Ornithocton pages; the set composition and skill ratings follow Game8's Long Sword best gear and Long Sword recommended skills pages (both in Japanese); version information comes from Capcom's official update information.
