SHAREXFacebookLINE

Cait, a rough-and-tumble survivor of the Wasteland. She appears as a cage fighter in the Combat Zone, and her foul mouth and violent behavior might, at first glance, make her seem like nothing more than a nuisance. However, beneath that attitude lies a tragic past and deep suffering from drug addiction. This article provides a complete guide to unlock Cait's heart and lead her to become your best partner.

This article is based on information as of June 24, 2026. Fallout 4 does not have a seasonal system. However, a major free update (Next-Gen Update) was released on April 25, 2024, for next-gen consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S) and PC. While this update includes performance and quality mode additions, stability improvements, bug fixes, and new Creation Club content, it does not directly balance Cait's abilities or quest content.

Cait's Character and How to Make Her Your Companion

Cait is a woman forced to fight as a spectacle cage fighter in the 'Combat Zone' in downtown Boston. She speaks with an Irish accent and has a cynical, violent, and selfish personality. Her hardened demeanor stems from harsh childhood experiences and subsequent addiction to drugs (particularly Psycho). Through her journey with the player, she will get a chance to confront and overcome her past.

Encountering Her in the Combat Zone

To recruit Cait, you must first head to the 'Combat Zone'. This area has become a nest for Raiders, and combat will begin as soon as you enter.

  1. Head to the 'Combat Zone' in downtown Boston.
  2. Clear out all Raiders inside. There will be a considerable number of enemies, so make sure to prepare ample ammunition and Stimpaks.
  3. Once all Raiders are defeated, the owner, Tommy Lonegan, will speak to you.
  4. In conversation with Tommy, you can free Cait by 'buying out her contract' and have her accompany you as a companion.

With that, your journey through The Commonwealth with Cait begins. She excels with shotguns and is a reliable combat professional in close quarters.

How to Efficiently Raise Cait's Affinity?

To raise Cait's affinity, you need to understand her 'bad person but with a code' personality. She dislikes helping people or good deeds, tending to prefer selfish and violent solutions.

List of Actions That Increase/Decrease Affinity

Cait's values are quite straightforward, and managing her affinity isn't difficult if you refer to the table below. Pay special attention to how her reaction to drug use changes 180 degrees before and after completing her personal quest.

Efficient Ways to Raise Affinity

Beyond dialogue, the following methods are highly effective for efficiently raising Cait's affinity:

  1. Fast travel naked: If you fast travel after removing all your clothing (items in the 'Apparel' category, not armor), Cait will make a comment and her affinity will increase. There's a cooldown, so you can't do it continuously, but repeating it with each fast travel will steadily boost her affinity.
  2. Repeat lock picking: You can repeatedly pick the same lock to raise affinity by unlocking a safe or door installed in your settlement, then using console commands (PC version) or instructing a companion to re-lock it, or by saving and loading. Picking locks in unowned locations also works.
  3. Use drugs and alcohol (quest-limited): Until her personal quest triggers, regularly using drugs or alcohol is an easy method. However, note that it becomes counterproductive after the quest is completed.

Completing the Personal Quest 'Benign Intervention'

Once Cait's affinity reaches a certain level (750/1000), she will confide in you about her past and the struggles of her Psycho addiction, asking for help. This marks the beginning of her personal quest, 'Benign Intervention'.

Path to the Destination: Vault 95

The quest's destination is 'Vault 95', located near the Glowing Sea in the southwestern part of the map. This Vault was once a rehabilitation facility for drug addicts, but it is now a base for the 'Gunner' faction, who are heavily armed.

Inside Vault 95 is a highly contested area with many traps, numerous Gunners, powerful Assaultrons, and many turrets. Before entering, make sure to prepare thoroughly with ample Stimpaks, powerful weapons, and Power Armor if possible. Assaultrons, in particular, pose a threat with their head lasers, so prioritizing destruction of their legs to immobilize them is effective. Guide Cait to the clean room in the deepest part of the Vault and have her sit in the treatment chair to relieve her of her long-standing suffering.

Romance and the Companion Perk 'Trigger Rush'

Once her personal quest is successfully completed and Cait's affinity is maximized (1000), your relationship with her will progress to a new stage.

Romancing Cait

After her affinity is maxed out, conversing with Cait will present dialogue options to develop a romance. If successful in persuasion, she will become your lover, and the experience bonus gained from sleeping together in a bed will upgrade from 'Well Rested' to the more effective 'Lover's Embrace'. The candid side she shows, despite her rough demeanor, will be the ultimate reward for players who worked hard to complete her quest.

The Extremely Powerful Perk 'Trigger Rush'

Once your bond with Cait is maximized, you will permanently acquire the companion Perk 'Trigger Rush'. This Perk is incredibly powerful for builds that heavily utilize V.A.T.S.

  • Perk Name: Trigger Rush
  • Acquisition Condition: Maximize Cait's affinity.
  • Location: Automatically acquired once the condition is met.
  • Effect: The in-game description states that 'Action Point (AP) refresh rate increases when Health is below 25%.' However, community verification has revealed that the actual effect is 'AP refresh rate increases by 50% when AP is below 25%,' making it significantly more powerful. This dramatically speeds up AP recovery after depletion, making it perfectly suited for sustained V.A.T.S. attacks and critical Perks builds.

Summary

Despite her rough demeanor, Cait is a deeply human companion who can overcome her weaknesses and open her heart depending on the player's actions. While you might initially be perplexed by the 'bad deeds' she favors, utilizing lock picking and fast travel makes it relatively easy to raise her affinity. Overcome her personal quest, 'Benign Intervention', and acquire the powerful Perk 'Trigger Rush' and 'Lover's Embrace'. The journey of accepting her past and guiding her to the future will undoubtedly make your adventure in The Commonwealth even more profound.
