Skyrim NPC Mod Installation: MO2 Priority and Dark Faces

SHAREXFacebookLINE

Install one NPC overhaul at a time in a test setup after checking the selected file's requirements. If a face turns dark, inspect asset overwrites separately from plugin order. Installing SKSE or placing every mod last is not a universal fix.

For PC Skyrim SE / AE. Author documentation and tool references were checked on September 6, 2026. We have not tested this setup in-game or captured gameplay screenshots. Start with the NPC overhaul comparison if you are still choosing a package.

Record your setup first

ItemRecord
GameStorefront and SkyrimSE.exe file version
OverhaulDownload page, filename, version and installer selections
PatchesSupported combination and required masters
RecoveryBackups of saves, mod list and plugin order

In Windows Explorer, inspect SkyrimSE.exe under Properties → Details. Do not mix SE / AE, Legendary Edition and VR downloads. If another mod requires SKSE, use the official SKSE page to match the runtime and storefront.

Install and inspect one change at a time

  1. Back up your normal saves and configuration. Use a new test save to inspect NPC changes.
  2. Read the selected file's requirements. Development credits are not a list of prerequisites.
  3. Install through your mod manager and record FOMOD selections such as characters and body options.
  4. Check that the assets and required plugins are enabled. If using a combined patch, follow its instructions for individual plugins without also disabling the assets it still needs.
  5. Inspect the chosen NPC's colour, shape, hair, neck and outfit under consistent conditions. Resolve problems before adding another overhaul.

This is a verification workflow, not an in-game-tested load order for a particular combination. Follow the relevant patch author's instructions when they specify additional steps.

MO2: asset priority and plugin order are different checks

Mod Organizer 2 maintains mod-file priority separately from plugin order. Its profile implementation describes higher priority winning. If the display is sorted by a different column, do not infer priority from visual position alone.

Example:If you want overhaul A's face but mod B wins the NPC record, making only A's files win does not necessarily align the two. Check the final NPC record and the source of FaceGen assets, then use an appropriate compatibility patch if needed. There is no universal A → B → C order for every mod list.

For Vortex, use that tool's conflict information and the patch instructions rather than copying MO2 panel positions.

Dark or unexpected faces: troubleshooting order

  1. Confirm coverage. Is the NPC included in the specific package you selected?
  2. Check recent changes.Include AI and outfit mods, not only other visual overhauls.
  3. Inspect assets and records.Check whether another mod replaces the overhaul's files or changes the same NPC through a plugin.
  4. Isolate the combination.Keep required dependencies in a minimal test setup and add changes individually. Do not overwrite your normal save while experimenting.
  5. Record a reproducible report.Include runtime, filenames, target NPC, reproduction steps and suspected conflicts when contacting the author's designated support channel.

The author of Face Discoloration Fix distinguishes fixing the colour from restoring the intended sculpt. A colour correction is not proof that the conflict has been resolved.
