How to read a Skill and its Modifiers
Read the base Skill first, then treat each Modifier as a rule that may change its behavior, cost, timing, targeting, or role. Official design material says Modifiers are not limited to passive numerical increases and can transform how an attack works.
Choose a Modifier only after comparing its full current tooltip with the job you want the Skill to perform. Modifier names, ranks, values, capacity costs, prerequisites, and incompatibilities are Skill-specific and patch-sensitive; the complete current details are in-game confirmation required.
Early Access scope and build status
This draft covers Content Update 7 through Chapter 4, Wild Lands. The last official announcement that published a complete build string was Hotfix 3, 0.6.0-public.133316+win.2810, on July 17, 2026.
A further hotfix was announced on July 22 without a number or complete build string. The current executable build is therefore in-game confirmation required. The verifiedBuild field records the last fully identified official build, not an in-game verification.
What to know before spending points
Identify the base Skill, the Mastery that provides it, and the combat problem you want to solve. Read the base tooltip without assuming a familiar name works as it does in another game or an older patch.
Keep the current Skill screen available while planning. This article does not provide universal Modifier counts, maximum ranks, point costs, or unlock tiers because official updates show individual Skills and Modifiers being enabled, rebalanced, or fixed separately.
A reliable reading order
First, read the base Skill's activation, targeting, damage or utility role, and resource or timing rules. Second, read every line of the candidate Modifier, including any drawback or condition. Third, identify what the Modifier changes rather than looking only for a larger number. Fourth, compare the resulting Skill with your other active and passive choices. Finally, test the interaction in combat before treating it as a finished setup.
Official design material gives a broad example in which a sweeping attack can become a channeled whirlwind. A later official update used Call Lightning to explain that optional Modifiers could add Exhaust or turn the ability into a cooldown Skill in exchange for more damage. Those examples demonstrate the design pattern; their exact current values and availability are in-game confirmation required.
A Modifier decision guide
Choose a behavior-changing Modifier when the new targeting, timing, or activation pattern better fits how you actually fight. Choose a conditional Modifier only when your setup can reliably meet its condition. Choose a numerical Modifier when the base behavior is already correct and the displayed increase supports the same role. Delay the choice when the tooltip introduces a cost or condition you cannot evaluate yet.
There is no source-backed universal best Modifier. The answer depends on the exact Skill, other Skills, Masteries, Attributes, items, and the current patch. Record those conditions when documenting a build instead of presenting one choice as mandatory.
How items, Charms, and Relics interact with the decision
Treat items and socketable upgrades as a separate layer of the same character plan. Charms and Relics can change the bonuses available on compatible equipment, while Skill Modifiers change or enhance the Skill itself. Read both tooltips before deciding which layer should solve a damage, defense, resource, or playstyle problem.
Do not claim that a particular Charm or Relic supports a Modifier without checking the exact current item and Skill text. Compatible equipment, completion bonuses, individual Skill interactions, and numerical breakpoints are in-game confirmation required.
Common mistakes and failure cases
Do not read only the highlighted benefit and miss a cost, condition, or behavior change. Do not assume every Modifier is a passive stat increase. Do not assume every Skill has the same number of Modifiers or the same ranking structure.
Do not copy exact ranks or values from an older guide. Content Update 7 changed several individual Skills and Modifiers, enabled Engage for Leap, and fixed a crash tied to Frost Explosion, showing why each choice needs patch-specific confirmation.
What to recheck after an update
Recheck this guide whenever patch notes mention Masteries, Skills, Modifiers, capacity, resource costs, cooldowns, targeting, Ailments, sustained abilities, tooltip changes, or balance. Revisit both benefits and drawbacks; a small wording change can alter how a Modifier should be used.
Before publication, confirm the current executable build and verify the exact current tooltip for every named Skill or Modifier used in an example. Keep universal counts, ranks, values, and incompatibilities marked in-game confirmation required unless direct current evidence is recorded.
