GRIM DAWN / SYSTEM
Normal or Veteran: Your First Difficulty Choice
Veteran is not a separate difficulty - it's a toggle that hardens Normal: tougher, more resistant enemies with more champion/hero spawns, in exchange for more loot and +10% XP. Quest progress is fully shared with Normal, and you can flip the toggle anytime from the title screen's character selection. ARPG veterans can start on Veteran; first-timers should start Normal - and since the death penalty is mild and the toggle is free, 'try it and switch if it doesn't fit' is a perfectly sound plan.

DO THIS FIRST
- ▸When in doubt, start Normal - you can flip to Veteran anytime, so the initial choice can't be wrong.
- ▸Comfortable with ARPGs? Start on Veteran and take the +10% XP and extra loot from the beginning.
- ▸Feeling overwhelmed? Toggle it off from the title screen's character selection before loading in - progress is shared, so nothing is lost.
- ▸The math: if deaths increase, the +10% XP evaporates against death losses. Steady progress wins.
- ▸Either way, Elite unlocks identically (defeat Loghorrean on Normal/Veteran - see Difficulties and Merits).
01 / WHAT-VETERAN-IS
What Veteran Actually Is (a Toggle, Not a Difficulty)
- ▸Veteran is Normal's hardened mode: enemies get more durable and resistant, with visibly more champion- and hero-tier spawns.
- ▸The payoff is increased loot and +10% XP.
- ▸Quest progress, shrines, and world state are fully shared with Normal - there is no separate Veteran progression.
- ▸Switch from the title menu's character selection screen, anytime before loading the character into the world, as often as you like.
02 / WHO-SHOULD-PICK
Which to Pick, by Player
- ▸First ARPG or first Grim Dawn run: start Normal - while you're learning the systems, enemies don't need to be spongy too.
- ▸Experienced with Diablo-style ARPGs: Veteran from the start is fine, and the +10% XP plus loot speeds up the early game.
- ▸Playing Hardcore: death means losing the character, so Normal is the safe-side choice until you know the game.
- ▸Second character onward: FG Merits put difficulty skipping on the table, which lowers the stakes of this choice entirely (see Difficulties and Merits).
03 / SWITCHING
Switching in Practice, and the Break-even
- ▸Switching costs nothing - no fee, no penalty, no limit - and shared progress means nothing is lost either way.
- ▸Death only costs the bottom-gauge XP, recoverable at your grave marker - but repeated deaths (plus the walking) easily erase the +10%.
- ▸If only a boss is the problem, you can even toggle off just for the boss, since switching works any time before loading in.
- ▸The test is simply whether deaths are trending up. If they are, toggling off is faster in practice.
04 / LONG-TERM-IMPACT
How It Affects What Comes Later
- ▸Elite and Ultimate unlock identically either way: defeat Loghorrean (the Act 4 final boss) on Normal/Veteran (both unlock together since v1.2.0.0).
- ▸Since v1.2.0.0 most Normal areas scale to level 100, so leveling never stalls even without Veteran.
- ▸Veteran changes nothing about later difficulties or reward structures - the choice is purely about Normal-band challenge and pacing.
- ▸For the bigger picture, see the progression guides (Your First Character and The Elite Transition Checklist).
