Nightblade - Dual Wielding Without Gear Requirements

A melee specialist that can dual wield without gear support, built on cold, pierce, acid, and bleed. It holds four dual-wield weapon pool skills - the most of any single mastery - and a permanent aura that reduces enemy resistances automatically. Builds tend toward light armor, but dodge, debuffs, and dedicated passives cut how often you get hit.

AT A GLANCE
  • Want to dual wield? Nightblade can do it with no gear requirement and has four dual-wield weapon pool skills, the most of any single mastery. The Japanese wiki's Nightblade page calls it the only such mastery, but that text was last updated 2026-07-21, before Fangs of Asterkarn released on 2026-07-23. The FoA Berserker also unlocks dual wielding through its tier-1 passive Implements of War, so "only" no longer holds.
  • Building for pierce? Weapon choice decides it. Pierce is its own damage type, unaffected by physical resistance or armor, and most weapons deliver it by converting physical damage through "100% Armor Piercing". Don't grab an axe or mace for raw base damage - equip a sword or similar carrying 100% Armor Piercing.
  • Attacks stalling out? The permanent debuff aura keeps damaging and reducing resistances on everything in melee range, so your damage rarely stops.
  • Feeling fragile? Pneumatic Burst gives Offensive Ability, total speed, and health regeneration plus an instant heal, which is rare in this game - and dodge bonuses and enemy Offensive Ability reduction cut the hit rate itself.
  • Want a default attack replacement? Nightblade has none. If you want something like Fire Strike, take it from the second mastery.
01 / WHAT-IT-DOES

What It Does Well

Officially described as clandestine warriors who served the great houses of the empire - skilled with all martial weapons but more feared for their blade magic, relying on illusion to close in or fighting at range with phantasmal blades.

  • Melee: the dual-wield tree carries four weapon pool skills (chance-to-proc replacements on default attacks) - the most on any single mastery.
  • Permanent aura: a tree that automatically damages and debuffs every enemy within melee range.
  • Ranged: a small area attack usable with ranged weapons, plus two thrown attacks - one of which is rapid-fire enough to be a main skill.
  • Buffs and passives: a rare percentage Cunning bonus, plus elemental resistance, crowd control resistance, Defensive Ability, and armor.
  • Pets: patches added multiple permanent, undying player-bonus pets, widening the range of viable builds.
  • Attribute growth: Physique 3 / Cunning 4 / Spirit 2.
02 / PIERCE-MECHANICS

The Pierce Damage Pitfall

Pierce, one of Nightblade's core damage types, behaves in a way that quietly wrecks builds when you pick weapons without knowing it.

  • Pierce is its own damage type like cold or chaos and is mitigated by pierce resistance. Despite the name and visuals, armor and physical resistance do not affect it at all.
  • Very few weapons carry pierce as their own base damage - in practice most weapons deliver it by converting physical damage.
  • Specifically, a weapon with "100% Armor Piercing" converts 100% of the physical damage in skills that reference that weapon into pierce.
  • So for a pierce build, don't pick an axe or mace for high base damage - equip a sword or similar that carries 100% Armor Piercing.
  • Caveats: a physical-to-something-else conversion is processed before 100% Armor Piercing; physical damage in skills with no weapon-damage component cannot be turned into pierce; and damage already converted once cannot be converted again.
  • Some gear also converts, for example, cold into pierce - and unlike 100% Armor Piercing that works even on skills with no weapon damage component (see the Damage Conversion article).
03 / STRENGTHS-WEAKNESSES

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Strength: high burst from dual wielding, plus mobility from a movement skill.
  • Strength: the automatic resistance-reducing aura keeps damage flowing without extra input.
  • Strength: strong buffs, debuffs, and passives across many damage types make it flexible as either the primary or secondary mastery.
  • Weakness: no default-attack replacement skill.
  • Weakness: few good hosts for on-being-hit devotion procs.
  • Weakness: outside a temporary invulnerability barrier, no sustained damage absorption and no enemy damage reduction debuff.
  • Weakness: many skills deal mixed damage types, so without conversion gear their flat damage is hard to use fully.
04 / PAIRING

Choosing a Partner and Getting Started

  • Inquisitor (AoM): the Japanese wiki explicitly calls the pierce synergy here very strong, and it also brings elemental scaling and resistance reduction.
  • Soldier: armor, health, and shield block cover the light-armor problem, and it supplies a default-attack replacement.
  • Occultist: overlaps on acid and bleed and layers on Curse of Frailty's resistance reduction.
  • If pierce is your main damage type, check for 100% Armor Piercing on the weapon before anything else (see the section above).
  • Skill allocation can be respecced at the Spirit Guide at any time (see the Respec article).
