New Skill Tree Guide: Three Branches and Skill Variants
Use the Patch 3.0 skill-tree overhaul across every class, from choosing a core active skill and its three modifier branches to rechecking tags, gear, Paragon, and Talismans.
Choose one primary Active skill, then select one modifier from each of its three level-gated branches. Branches one and two provide general upgrades; branch three contains build-defining Skill Variants. Base-game owners can use two of the three variant choices, while Lord of Hatred owners can choose from all three. If a variant changes damage type or skill category, reevaluate gear, class mechanics, Paragon, and Talismans as one package.
Five Steps from Tree to Build
51. Choose the Primary Active Skill
Pick the attack used most often. Before comparing damage, confirm that its area, range, resource cost, cooldown, and feel suit the target content.
2. Build the Foundation in Branch One
Choose one unlocked modifier that improves the skill's basic usability, such as coverage, generation, or duration. Choices within the same branch are mutually exclusive.
3. Cover a Weakness in Branch Two
Cover the build's missing resource, defense, control, or mobility instead of defaulting to damage. If it duplicates branch one, move one choice to a different role.
4. Define the Build in Branch Three
Skill Variants can change behavior or element, so compare their complete gear and system packages rather than one tooltip number. The base game exposes two choices; Lord of Hatred exposes all three.
5. Recheck Tags and Dependencies
After committing, recheck the displayed tags, damage type, affixes, class mechanic, Paragon, and Talisman. Bonuses based on the skill's former tags may no longer apply.
Six Rules of the New Skill Tree
6A Base-Game Overhaul for Everyone
The new tree, three Active-skill branches, level 70, and up to 83 Skill Points are base-game updates. Expansion ownership does not leave you on the old tree.
Three Branches per Active Skill
Every Active skill has three modifier branches, and each branch asks you to select one option. It is not a linear path where every node is taken.
Branches Unlock with Level
Modifier choices unlock at their intended levels. Treat a leveling setup and its level-70 form as different checkpoints.
Branches One and Two Are General Modifiers
The first two branches generally tune power, area, uptime, defense, or generation. Use both to solve the primary skill's practical weaknesses.
Branch Three Defines the Build
Branch-three Skill Variants can alter element, category, or operation. The same named skill may require different gear and rotation after the choice.
Some Former Passives Moved to Items
Many former Passive and Key Passive powers moved to redesigned Aspects or Uniques, while some major Aspect effects moved into the tree. Old builds cannot be restored by copying point allocation alone.
Six Skill Variant Decision Rules
6Confirm Ownership Scope First
Everyone can use branch three, but all three choices require Lord of Hatred. Base-game owners still choose between two, so the variant system itself is not wholly expansion-exclusive.
Build Around the Converted Tags
When a choice changes Fire to Frost, Bone to Blood, or similar categories, use the live post-conversion tags. Do not select affixes from the skill name or its former identity.
Recalculate Rank-Scaling Effects
Many variants improve with skill ranks. Compare them at the rank used with gear, not only at rank one.
Separate Boss, Area, and Uptime Value
A choice can perform differently against bosses, packs, or during mobile farming. Read any recommendation together with its target content.
Swap the Dependency Package Together
When changing a variant, audit its affixes, Uniques, class mechanic, Paragon, and Talisman at the same time. A skill-only swap is an incomplete test.
Use the Live Tooltip as Final Authority
Patches can change individual multipliers, tags, and rank coefficients. This guide fixes the decision process; the current in-game tooltip remains the final authority for numbers and applicability.
What to Check on All Eight Classes
8Barbarian
Check whether the primary skill and weapon setup reference the same equipped weapon, resource generation, Overpower, and duration conditions.
Druid
Some branch-two and variant choices select Human, Werewolf, or Werebear form. A Nature skill adopting a form does not necessarily gain the Shapeshifting tag, so verify the live tags.
Necromancer
Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages, and Golem now live in the tree, so check summon slots, Corpses, Essence, command input, and the Book of the Dead together.
Rogue
Confirm that Marksman or Cutthroat, Imbuement, Trap, and mobility tags match gear and Talisman conditions, then compare boss and farming choices separately.
Sorcerer
As in the official Frost Hydra example, an elemental conversion changes its affixes, Enchantment interactions, and status dependencies. Rebuild around the converted element.
Spiritborn
Check Spirit, skill category, Vigor cost, and mobility, then confirm the chosen variant fits both the Spirit Hall and gear requirements.
Paladin
Check Holy damage, Auras, Oaths, and Shield interactions. Preserve the build's defensive and support uptime after changing an attack skill.
Warlock
Check controlled Demons, Soul Shards, damage over time, and Curse conditions, and distinguish bonuses applied to the caster from those applied to minions.
Five Checks After a Respec
5Displayed Tags
Open the skill details and verify element, category, Summoning, Shapeshifting, and other displayed tags.
Resource Loop
Test generation, cost, cooldown, and buff uptime, and measure any downtime that stops the primary skill.
Gear and Uniques
Remove affixes tied to the old element or category and verify every Unique trigger.
Class Mechanic and Endgame Board
Confirm that the class mechanic, Glyphs, boards, and Talisman conditions match the converted tags.
Retest under Equal Conditions
Compare boss damage, area clear, survival, and input load at the same difficulty, enemy, and gear. Do not infer farming performance from one short target test.
Eight Easy-to-Miss Boundaries
8- The new skill tree is a base-game update, not a wholly Lord of Hatred-exclusive system.
- Base-game owners can use two of the three branch-three choices; Lord of Hatred unlocks all three.
- Select one choice per branch; choices within a branch are not all active at once.
- Branches are level-gated, so a leveling character does not have every final choice.
- For element or category conversions, base gear decisions on the post-conversion in-game tags.
- Druid form choices have special exceptions; adopting a form is not identical to gaining the Shapeshifting tag.
- Do not plan current crafting or Cube use around Legacy gear carrying obsolete passive-rank affixes.
- Multipliers, tags, and rank coefficients can be patched; prefer the live Patch 3.1.1-or-later tooltip over fixed article numbers.
How to Read This on the Live Patch
5- Patch 3.0 introduced the new tree and Skill Variants.
- Patch 3.0.x continued fixing Skill Variant rank scaling, tags, targeting, and descriptions.
- Patch 3.1.0 broadly adjusted classes and items, so do not reuse old build multipliers unchanged.
- Patch 3.1.1 also contains class fixes, so recheck displayed tags and actual triggers.
- This guide covers the decision process and ownership scope; current build articles handle individual numerical rankings.
