QUICK ANSWER

Defeat the Corrupted Reaper during the seasonal questline to unlock the repeatable encounter at Pandemonium Threshold in Zarbinzet. Start the fight at the pedestal, then avoid the center landing, soul projectiles, floor traps, and the straight dash that triggers traps. A Superior Lair Key is for opening the post-kill Hoard in Torment I+, not for starting the fight.

UNLOCK

Four Steps to Unlock and Claim the Hoard

4
STEP 01

1. Complete the Questline Kill

Advance the Season of Death Awakening questline on the Seasonal Realm and defeat the Corrupted Reaper once. Blizzard explicitly identifies that first questline kill as the repeatable-unlock condition.

STEP 02

2. Enter Pandemonium Threshold

After the first kill, return to Pandemonium Threshold in Zarbinzet. If the entrance is missing, verify the seasonal quest state and current realm before following speculative workarounds.

3. Start the Repeat Fight

Use the pedestal inside to summon the Corrupted Reaper. Live guides and Blizzard's reward wording treat the Superior Key as the post-kill Hoard key rather than a summon cost.

4. Open the Hoard in Torment I+

After the kill, spend a Superior Lair Key to open the Hoard in Torment I or higher. You can start and finish the fight without a key, but cannot claim the primary cache reward, so check your supply first.

FIGHT

Five Combat Steps

5
STEP 01

1. Keep the Center Clear

The Reaper telegraphs a move to the center and deals a large landing area attack. Avoid anchoring in the middle and keep enough space to move outward when the tell begins.

STEP 02

2. Sidestep Soul Projectiles

Sidestep the slow frontal soul projectiles. Preserve a clean escape lane so their movement pressure does not leave you trapped by the next floor marker or dash.

Corrupted Reaper
STEP 03

3. Do Not Cluster Soul Traps

When circular Soul Trap markers appear, do not keep fighting on top of the same cluster. Leave open space that the next dash cannot chain through instead of filling the entire outer edge.

STEP 04

4. Break the Dash-and-Trap Chain

The straight dash triggers Soul Traps along its path. If the boss, your character, and a trap cluster line up, move laterally and avoid routing the dash through the minefield.

STEP 05

5. Attack After Each Safe Reposition

As the fight progresses, traps, dashes, and area attacks overlap. Do not rely on unofficial health thresholds; commit damage and cooldowns after each successful reposition.

Mechanic Quick Reference

4

Center Landing

A crouching tell precedes a move to center and a landing area hit. Create distance from the middle.

Corrupted Reaper

Soul Projectiles

Slow frontal projectiles. Sidestep the line without retreating into existing traps.

Corrupted Reaper

Soul Traps

Circular floor hazards that arm after a delay. Leave the cluster and preserve a lateral escape lane for the next dash.

Corrupted Reaper

Soul Dash

The main chain threat: a straight rush that triggers traps in its path. Step out of the line between the boss and trap clusters.

Direct Mythic Unique Chase

Blizzard identifies the Corrupted Reaper as the best direct chance for Mythic Uniques and Pandemonium Fragments. Patch 3.1.1a further increased Mythic and Iconic Mythic rates, but no percentage was published.

Up to Two Pandemonium Fragments

In patch 3.1.1, the Corrupted Reaper drops up to two Pandemonium Fragments, scaling with Torment. Up to two does not mean two are guaranteed at every tier.

Two Superior Key Supply Routes

Deathtoll Chambers remain the primary source. After the July 21 server hotfix, the final repeatable Glints of Hope cache also contains Superior Lair Keys, making reputation a secondary supply route.

Four-Fragment Mythic Conversion

With the Horadric Cube unlocked through Lord of Hatred, spend four Pandemonium Fragments on Mythic conversion. The seasonal boss is available with the base game, but this conversion route requires the expansion.

Highest Stable Torment

Fragment output scales with Torment, so higher tiers have value. Favor the highest tier where you can consistently avoid traps and finish rather than turning every key into a slow or failed run.

Chase Direct Mythic Drops

Prioritize Superior Keys for the Corrupted Reaper when chasing direct Mythic drops. Patch 3.1.1a raised the rate, but did not make every run guaranteed, so do not set a fixed run count.

Farm Conversion Fragments

Combine the Reaper's up-to-two route with the guaranteed one Fragment from the final repeatable Glints reward. Switch based on current key supply and reputation progress instead of forcing only one activity.

Base Game and Expansion Paths

Base-game seasonal players can fight the Reaper and chase dropped Mythics. Lord of Hatred owners can add Horadric Cube conversion as a second use for earned Fragments.

CAUTION

Common Mistakes

5
  • Do not treat the Superior Lair Key as a summon cost; it opens the post-kill Hoard.
  • Do not turn the 3.1.1a rate increase into a guaranteed Mythic claim; Blizzard published no exact percentage.
  • Do not describe up to two Fragments as two guaranteed at every Torment; the result scales by tier.
  • Do not hard-code community 66%/33% health thresholds as official phases; react to telegraphs and overlapping traps.
  • Do not use pre-July-21 tables that list Deathtoll as the only key route; the final repeatable reputation cache is now a secondary source.
LIVE UPDATE

Live 3.1.1 and Hotfixes

4
  • Patch 3.1.1 raised Corrupted Reaper Fragment drops to up to two by Torment and fixed Nemesis Lairs failing to trigger in its boss lair.
  • Patch 3.1.1a increased Mythic and Iconic Mythic drop rates from the Corrupted Reaper; no exact rate was published.
  • Patch 3.1.1a removed the equip limit on crafted Mythic items; the one-item rule from the season announcement is no longer live.
  • The July 21 server hotfix added Superior Lair Keys to the final repeatable Glints of Hope cache.
