Build Diagnostic Flow: Low Damage, Frequent Deaths, and Unclear Gear Upgrades
Before replacing an entire loadout, isolate one symptom against the same enemy and difficulty and find the broken activation condition. The primary route assumes current expansion-inclusive builds, with base-game-only options presented as alternatives to the same diagnosis.
For one-shots, inspect the weakest Toughness type and Life. For attrition deaths, inspect Barrier, Fortify, and recovery refresh. For slow clears, verify the main skill's tags and coverage. For low boss damage, verify Vulnerable, Critical, and multiplier uptime. If attacks stall, inspect Resource and cooldown flow. Change only one item, skill, Paragon choice, or Talisman component, and revert it if the symptom does not improve.
Six First-Pass Decisions
61. Lock the Enemy and Difficulty
Do not judge only from town stats. Use the same training target or the same activity and difficulty, recording kill time, death cause, and Resource stalls before changing anything.
2. Separate Survival from Damage
Do not mix being unable to attack before dying with attacking continuously but failing to kill. Choose either survival stabilization or damage activation first.
3. Classify One-Shot, Attrition, or Execution
Classify deaths as a single hit removing Life, recovery losing to attrition, or missing a telegraphed mechanic. Do not try to solve avoidable attacks only with defensive stats.
4. Separate Packs, Elites, and Bosses
Area clear, elite setup, and long boss uptime are different performance tests. If only one is slow, inspect the activation condition unique to that situation.
5. Revert the Last Single Change
If the build broke after changing a skill variant, item, Aspect, Paragon choice, or Talisman, revert that one change first. Check tags, required gear, and set thresholds.
6. Choose One Repair Target
Limit the first repair to one slot and retest under identical conditions. If it improves, move to the next weakness; if unchanged or worse, revert and try another branch.
Seven Symptom Routes
7Killed in One Hit
Life disappears before Barrier or recovery can respond, often against one element or boss attack.
Hover Toughness and identify the weakest Physical or elemental type. Then inspect Life, Armor, the relevant Resistance, and the attack telegraph against the same enemy.
Test one item slot or defensive skill that improves the weakest type. If the attack is meant to be avoided, fix movement, immunity, or Block timing rather than assuming it should be tanked.
Use defensive Talisman sets or Charms only when their damage type and trigger match the problem. Do not remove a core defense merely to meet a set count.
For base-game-only builds, repair the same weakness through Life, Armor or Resistance, a maintainable Aspect, and Paragon.
Collapse under Sustained Damage
The build survives initially but fails after Barrier, Fortify, Potions, or recovery stop refreshing.
Observe Barrier refresh, Fortify reserve and healing rate, conditional Damage Reduction, and Potion timing separately.
Before adding more static defense, identify the first layer that expires and stabilize its refresh, recovery, or cooldown.
Do not treat Mercenary reinforcement, Runewords, or Talisman effects as permanent; include their downtime in the test.
For base-game-only builds, prioritize layers you can actually maintain through defensive skills, Aspects, or hit-based recovery.
Slow Pack Clear and Farming
Bosses are manageable, but coverage, movement, or setup against packs makes farming stall.
Verify the main skill's current element, category, and coverage, multi-target status application, and multipliers that activate within a short setup.
Before adding single-target scaling, repair the biggest bottleneck among coverage, movement, setup actions, and Resource recovery.
If a third skill variant changes element or tags, recheck that Talisman, gear multipliers, and Charms match the new tags.
For base-game-only builds, create the same farming role through the available two variants, coverage Aspects, and gear affixes.
Low Damage Only against Bosses
Packs and elites die, but Vulnerable, Critical, Lucky Hit, or Overpower cycles fail against bosses.
Inspect boss Vulnerable uptime, Critical Chance, the main skill's Lucky Hit Chance, Overpower stacks, and gaps between short buffs.
Before increasing magnitude, make the most important condition refreshable throughout the boss fight. Replace inactive scaling with a multiplier that remains active.
Choose Talisman set effects and Unique Charms by whether their condition works on bosses and required stacks can be maintained.
For base-game-only builds, audit Vulnerable application, Critical activation, guaranteed procs, and Aspect uptime in the same order.
Resource or Cooldown Stalls
The build is strong briefly but cannot sustain the main skill and spends too long waiting for recovery.
Separate generation, cost, attack speed, Lucky-Hit-based recovery, on-kill effects, and recovery sources that do not work on bosses.
Add or stabilize one recovery source that works on bosses relative to peak consumption. Retest so Attack Speed does not merely increase spending.
Measure trigger conditions and downtime for Runeword, Mercenary, or Charm recovery rather than counting it as permanent supply.
For base-game-only builds, choose boss-capable recovery from skill variants, Aspects, gear affixes, and Paragon.
Build Broke after a Gear or Variant Change
Displayed stats rose, but the main skill, set, Aspect, or activation icon stopped working.
Revert the last item or variant and compare element, category, required weapon, Aspect, set count, and Talisman conditions.
Identify the lost requirement, then rebuild it on the new item or return to the old one. Do not call an item an upgrade only because its Item Power or Attack Power is higher.
Re-audit skill-variant tag conversion together with Talisman Seal, Charm, and set thresholds.
For base-game-only builds, restore the same dependency chain across available variants, Aspects, gear, and Paragon.
Cannot Identify a Real Gear Upgrade
A candidate has higher quality or headline stats, but replacing required affixes, an Aspect, or Talisman conditions makes the outcome unclear.
Before equipping, separate required conditions, always-on multipliers, defensive weaknesses, editable affixes, Aspect transfer, and Tempering or Masterworking cost.
Keep the old item and test only one candidate. Add required affixes to the Loot Filter and compare damage, survival, and stall time against the same enemy.
If gear supplies a condition needed by a Talisman set or Charm, include that dependency in the comparison. Protect source items before Cube modifications.
For base-game-only builds, compare required affixes, Aspect, Tempering, and Masterworking, then replace only the finished single item.
Repair Priority Order
5Activation Requirements
Confirm the main skill, required weapon, element and tags, Aspect, and set count.
Survival Floor
Repair the weakest Toughness type, Life, and the answer to one-shot mechanics first.
Uptime
Verify Vulnerable, Barrier, Fortify, Resource, and cooldown uptime where needed.
Magnitude and Quality
After activation and uptime are stable, improve multipliers, affix rolls, Tempering, and Masterworking.
Farming Target
Farm only the gear, materials, or boss keys exposed by the diagnosis.
Diagnostic Boundaries
6- Do not diagnose conditional effects, individual Resistances, recovery, summons, or damage over time from Attack Power and Toughness summaries alone.
- Keep old gear and compare one item at a time; simultaneous replacements hide the cause.
- No fixed defensive number is promised to tank boss mechanics or ground effects intended to be avoided.
- Do not treat Lucky Hit, Overpower, or conditional multipliers as permanent from town stats alone.
- Include Talisman, Runewords, Mercenaries, and Skill Variants only when ownership and activation requirements are met.
- No fixed DPS, permanent best item, required run count, or drop rate is guaranteed.
Patch 3.1.1 Diagnostic Baseline
6- Armor and Resistances are diminishing-return ratings, and Armor mitigates both Physical and Non-Physical damage.
- Fortify is a healing reserve used while Life is missing, not universal Damage Reduction.
- Patch 3.0 combines gear damage multipliers additively with one another, so retired damage buckets are not used.
- Skill Variant element or category changes can alter gear, Aspect, Paragon, and Talisman dependencies.
- Patch 3.1.x continues to fix gear, tooltips, procs, and Damage Reduction, so live displays and controlled retests are the final baseline.
- Base-game-only builds still use the all-player Skill Tree and current defense rules, replacing only expansion-exclusive layers.
