Minion Necromancer Leveling Build
A beginner-friendly Lord of Hatred route to level 70 with minions holding the front line. It needs no Unique and adds a Talisman, Runewords, and a Mercenary as they become available.
Why This Is the Beginner Baseline
2Strengths
- Minions hold enemy attention, giving new players room to recover.
- No mandatory Unique; expansion systems are added as they drop, so progression never waits for a finished setup.
- The same simple loop handles packs and bosses through level 70.
Limitations
- You still need to command Warriors and the Golem onto priority targets.
- Damage falls behind in higher Torment tiers, so transition to an endgame build after 70.
Final Six-Skill Setup
6Target Rank is the base-skill goal at level 70; spend remaining points on the chosen branch modifiers as they unlock.
Skeletal Mage
Ranged area damage and the early priority.
Skeletal Warrior
Front line and main damage; command onto priority targets.
Golem
Engages packs and starts corpse generation.
Corpse Explosion
Area damage that consumes spare Corpses.
Decrepify
Pack-wide debuff and safety tool.
Army of the Dead
Ultimate for Elites and bosses.
Book of the Dead
3Setup checklist
- Use Skirmisher Skeleton Warriors with upgrade 1 and prioritize their ranks.
- Use Shadow Skeleton Mages with upgrade 2; their attacks build a Barrier for the summoner and Mages.
- Start with Bone Golem upgrade 1, then consider Gargantua once that branch unlocks.
Add Expansion Systems as They Unlock
3Talisman
- While leveling, prioritize a Horadric Seal with the most Charm slots available.
- Keep Charms with Movement Speed, Minion or Darkness Skill ranks, Shadow Damage, or Minion Attack Speed.
- Use the full Practiced Technique Charm set if it comes together; never pause leveling to complete it.
Runewords
- The first target is Igni + Wat for automatic Decrepify; keep Decrepify on the bar until the pair is complete.
- For defense, Nagu, Igni, or Cir + Que can invoke Earthen Bulwark, in descending expected uptime.
- Socket Runewords in the Helm, Chest, or Pants and reserve weapon sockets for damage gems.
Mercenary
- Default to Varyana with Cleave, Hysteria, Bloodthirst, and Intimidated to improve attack speed and tempo.
- Swap to Subo when route efficiency matters more, using his enemy and resource minimap reveal.
- Campaign quests can dismiss the primary Mercenary, so do not make survival depend on the Mercenary.
The same six skills, Book of the Dead, and gear priorities work in the base game. Omit Runeword automation, the Talisman, and the Mercenary, and cast Decrepify manually. The main article rating assumes the expansion setup.
Level-by-Level Priorities
4Build the three-minion core
- Take one starter attack, then prioritize Skeletal Mages as soon as they unlock.
- Raise Warriors from Corpses and add Golem to the bar when available.
- Early Book of the Dead baseline: Skirmisher Warriors upgrade 1, Shadow Mages upgrade 2, and Bone Golem upgrade 1.
Add the curse and Corpse Explosion
- Open with Decrepify, send the Golem in, then spend generated Corpses on Corpse Explosion.
- Prioritize ranks in summon skills and start utility skills at the minimum rank needed for their function.
Complete the bar with Army of the Dead
- Once Army of the Dead unlocks, replace the starter attack and lock in the six-skill bar above.
- Save the Ultimate for Elites and bosses; use commands, Decrepify, and Corpse Explosion on normal packs.
Stabilize defenses and prepare for endgame
- Fill Maximum Life, Armor, and Resistances in the order you need them; prioritize Movement Speed on boots and equip only the Runes and Charms already obtained.
- At 70, begin collecting gear for a dedicated endgame minion setup instead of forcing this leveling version into high Torment.
Simple Combat Loop
4- Apply Decrepify to the pack.
- Command Skeletal Warriors and the Golem onto the dangerous target.
- Maintain Skeletal Mages with spare Essence and chain Corpse Explosion when Corpses appear.
- Add Army of the Dead for Elites and bosses. If minions fall, resummon before continuing the attack.
Hard is a reasonable starting point. Lower it if Elites take too long or deaths interrupt progress; only move up when normal packs no longer slow you down.
What to Keep While Leveling
3Affix priorities
- Upgrade weapons for item power and weapon damage before perfect affixes; leveling replacements are frequent.
- On armor, seek Maximum Life and the Armor or Resistances you lack. Movement Speed is valuable on boots and amulet.
- For offense, prioritize Minion skill ranks, Minion damage, and Attack Speed; Movement Speed and multiplicative damage are useful on the Amulet.
Helpful Aspects—not requirements
Save materials at low levels and avoid repeatedly investing in fast-replaced weapons. Aspect names and values are part of the weekly review.
Safe Alternatives
3Adjust without breaking the build
- For more safety, replace Army of the Dead with Blood Mist; boss damage drops, but you gain an emergency escape.
- Once Igni + Wat automates Decrepify reliably, its bar slot can become Sever for mobility; switch back immediately if automation is inconsistent.
- If Corpse generation is unreliable, temporarily keep a starter generator and return to Army of the Dead once stable.
