Shred Druid Leveling Build
A Lord of Hatred mobile melee route for levels 1–70: build Spirit with Claw, dash between targets with Shred, add Runes, a Talisman, and Mercenaries, then transition into Storm Shred at 70.
Why This Is the Beginner Baseline
2Strengths
- Shred's dash moves quickly between targets and keeps normal-pack clearing fluid.
- No mandatory Unique; weapon damage, Willpower, and Spirit generation carry the build to level 70.
- Blood Howl, Earthen Bulwark, and Cyclone Armor split healing and defensive duties.
Limitations
- As a melee build, it must disengage from dangerous ground effects and heavy attacks.
- Spamming Shred on an empty Spirit globe stalls the build; recover with the Basic skill and Spirit Boons.
Final Six-Skill Setup
6Target Rank is the base-skill goal at level 70; spend remaining points on the chosen branch modifiers as they unlock.
Claw
Basic Spirit generator used whenever Shred cannot be sustained.
Shred
Main attack that dashes to targets and cuts through packs in sequence.
Blood Howl
Cooldown used to heal and reset combat tempo.
Cyclone Armor
Passive defense with an active knockback when surrounded.
Earthen Bulwark
Barrier and emergency defense timed for dangerous attacks.
Wolves
Supplemental pack damage; use the active command against tougher targets.
Spirit Boons
3Setup checklist
- At level 15, clear Túr Dúlra in Scosglen and finish the class quest to unlock Spirit Boons. Lower the difficulty if the route is too slow.
- For the four baseline choices, work toward Gift of the Stag, Scythe Talons, Energize, and Masochistic, prioritizing Spirit sustain first.
- After unlocking all four spirits, bond with Eagle and add Swooping Attacks as the fifth Boon.
Expansion Setup Leading into Storm Shred
3Talisman
- While leveling, use a Seal with more slots and prioritize useful individual Charms over a set.
- Look for Shapeshifting, Core, or Werewolf ranks, All Stats, Armor or Maximum Life, and Critical Strike Chance.
- Druid-specific sets arrive in Torment; do not wait for one while leveling, and begin the Storm Shepherd's Call transition at 70.
Runewords
- Moni + Ceh uses Shred's Mobility casts to summon Spirit Wolves for support damage and Cold control.
- Poc + Gar converts Spirit spending into stacking Critical Strike Chance and fits repeated Shred casts.
- Place leveling Runewords in armor, then rebuild them as Moni + Gar and Nagu + Que during the endgame transition.
Mercenary
- Use Varyana as primary with Cleave, Hysteria, Bloodthirst, and Bloodlust for Attack Speed.
- Use Raheir as Reinforcement, triggering Crater from Shred as the Opportunity Skill.
- Subo is an exploration alternative, while primary Raheir is available when defense matters more.
In the base game, keep the same six skills, Spirit Boons, and gear priorities while omitting Runes, the Talisman, and Mercenaries. Expect more Claw casts for Spirit and consider a separate base-game endgame setup after 70.
Level-by-Level Priorities
4Establish the Claw-to-Shred loop
- Take one rank in Claw, then prioritize Shred after it unlocks. Return to Claw whenever Spirit runs dry.
- Add Blood Howl and use it after taking damage rather than spending every cooldown at full Life.
Add defenses and unlock Spirit Boons
- Add Earthen Bulwark and Cyclone Armor; use Bulwark for dangerous attacks and Cyclone Armor when surrounded.
- After level 15, finish Túr Dúlra and the class quest, then start with Gift of the Stag to stabilize Spirit.
Complete the bar with Wolves
- Add Wolves and let them attack passively in normal packs; command them alongside Shred against Elites and bosses.
- Prioritize Shred, followed by Blood Howl, Cyclone Armor, and Earthen Bulwark, taking branch upgrades when their utility unlocks.
Stabilize Spirit and melee defenses
- Fill gaps in Spirit generation, Maximum Resource, then Movement Speed, adding Moni + Ceh and Poc + Gar as found to reduce forced returns to Claw.
- Fill Maximum Life, Armor, and Resistances in the order needed. At level 70, begin Paragon and consider a dedicated endgame setup.
Simple Combat Loop
4- Build Spirit with Claw, then use Shred to dash to the priority target.
- Move through the pack with Shred instead of remaining in frontal attacks or ground effects.
- Use Blood Howl after damage, Earthen Bulwark for heavy hits, and Cyclone Armor when surrounded.
- Command Wolves against Elites and bosses. If Spirit empties, stop Shred and rebuild with Claw.
Normal or Hard is a reasonable starting point. Lower it if Spirit repeatedly empties on normal packs, Elites take too long, or melee deaths interrupt progress. Raise difficulty only when packs no longer break your movement pace.
What to Keep While Leveling
3Affix priorities
- Prioritize weapon damage and item power on two-handers; while leveling, a large weapon upgrade outweighs ideal affixes.
- For offense seek Shred ranks, Willpower, Critical Strike Chance, and Attack Speed; for comfort prioritize Spirit generation and Movement Speed.
- On armor seek Maximum Life, Armor, and Resistances. No Unique is mandatory; make melee survival reliable before adding damage.
Helpful Aspects—not requirements
Low-level gear is replaced quickly, so do not spend scarce materials on every upgrade. Aspect names and effects remain part of the weekly review.
Safe Alternatives
3Adjust without breaking the build
- For burst instead of steady support, replace Wolves with Cataclysm and save the long cooldown for bosses.
- Until Spirit is stable, add more Claw attacks; this is safer than removing a defensive skill for more offense.
- For a ranged playstyle, switch to Lightning Storm, but change the skill tree, gear priorities, and rotation together.
