Zomboid PC Requirements: RAM, VRAM, -Xmx (B42.21)
Short answer: Steam lists only minimum requirements for Project Zomboid, and no recommended spec. On Windows that means an Intel 2.77GHz quad-core CPU, 8GB of RAM, 10GB of free disk space, and a dedicated graphics card with at least 4GB of VRAM. This article sorts out only what can be confirmed officially, and does not name CPUs or GPUs to buy, because neither Steam nor the official wiki pages we could read give a recommended figure to base that on.
This article is for Build 42.21. Build 42.21 went to Stable on September 28, 2026 (confirmed on Steam news). 42.22 has been on the Pre-Release branch (a test branch) since late October and is not Stable yet. We checked the Steam store requirements in November. We did not read the 42.22 Pre-Release posts for changes to the requirements.
Steam's official requirements (minimum)
| Item | Windows | Mac | Linux |
|---|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit | OS X 10.15 or later | Ubuntu LTS 16.04 or Steam Machine (needs Libgcc 6 or higher) |
| CPU | Intel 2.77GHz quad-core | Intel x86 or Apple silicon | Intel 2.77GHz quad-core |
| Memory | 8GB | 8GB | 8GB |
| Free disk space | 10GB | 10GB | 10GB |
| Graphics | Dedicated card with at least 4GB of VRAM (OpenGL 2.1 and GLSL 1.2 support, generally 2012 or newer) | AMD or Intel integrated graphics (nVidia is not compatible on Mac) | Dedicated card with at least 4GB of VRAM (same wording as Windows) |
| Sound | FMOD-compatible sound card | ||
- The "Recommended" field on Steam is empty. Only minimums are listed, so there is no official recommended spec.
- On Windows, a PC with only integrated graphics falls outside the requirements as worded ("dedicated card", "4GB of VRAM"). Whether integrated graphics can run the game cannot be judged from the official text.
- A minimum is the lowest line at which the game can run, not a promise of smooth play. How things change with mods, larger saves or multiplayer is not stated in the official material we could confirm.
Raising the memory allocation (-Xmx)
The official wiki (pzwiki, Startup parameters, page version 42.20.4) says the memory given to Java (the JVM) can be changed with a startup option. In your Steam library, right-click Project Zomboid, choose Properties, open the General tab, and use the Launch Options field.
-Xmx8192m --
- -Xmx sets the maximum allocation. The wiki's example is 8192m (8GB). That does not mean the value suits everyone. The wiki gives no recommended value.
- Write JVM arguments first and end them with " -- " (two hyphens). The "--" is needed even when there are no game arguments (for example -debug).
- It is generally safer not to set -Xms (the minimum allocation). The wiki warns that if the JVM cannot allocate the minimum you set with -Xms, the game will not start, and says it is better not to set a minimum for most people.
- Do not enter a value larger than the memory your PC actually has (our own caution, not from the wiki). Check your installed memory first.
★We could not confirm the default allocation in Build 42.21. We have not tried it in the game, so we do not claim that adding -Xmx helps or is unnecessary. Before changing anything, note down your current launch options so you can restore them.
If the game will not start or looks wrong (-safemode)
- -safemode: starts with reduced resolution, texture compression enabled, and tile scale and texture scale both set to 1x. It also disables the WeatherShader and FBO support (the wiki's description; without FBO, offscreen rendering will not work).
- The game switches to safe mode automatically if it fails to create a framebuffer object (FBO) (wiki). If the picture is very coarse or weather effects are missing, your graphics driver or GPU may not support FBO (this inference is ours).
- -safemode goes in the same launch options field as -Xmx (the wiki's example has the form "-Xmx8192m -Xms8192m -- -debug": JVM arguments, then "--", then game arguments).
Settings to adjust when it runs slowly (from the pzwiki Options page)
★A caveat first. The pzwiki Options page is tagged 41.78.19 (Build 41), and we have not confirmed that the menu names and items are the same in Build 42.21. We list the English names as written.
- Texture Compression: compresses textures to save graphics memory (VRAM). Turning it off improves performance at the cost of more VRAM (restart required).
- Double-sized Textures: turning it off lowers texture quality and may improve performance (restart required).
- Maximum Texture Size / Maximum Vehicle Texture Size: lower values use less graphics memory.
- Simple Clothing Textures / Simple Weapon Textures: turning them on skips blood, holes and similar details, which can save texture memory and may improve performance.
- Lighting Quality: the wiki says to turn it down if the game feels laggy.
- Tiered Zombie Updates: updates out-of-sight zombies less often to improve performance.
- Blood Decals: the percentage of blood decals. Lowering it can improve performance.
Which setting helps differs from PC to PC. Change them one at a time rather than all at once (our own advice).
Where this differs from our other articles
Our SSD buying guide (Best 1TB NVMe SSDs for Zomboid mods) gave Steam's basic requirement as "5GB of free space". The Steam store entry we checked in November says 10GB. We could not confirm whether the Steam entry was different when that guide was written or whether it was a misreading. We corrected the SSD guide (Japanese and English) to 10GB when publishing this article. Please follow Steam's current figure (10GB).
What we could not confirm
- An official recommended spec: not found on Steam or on the pzwiki pages we could read. We give no CPU or GPU model recommendations.
- The default memory allocation in Build 42.21, and the effect of raising -Xmx: unconfirmed, and not tried in the game.
- Whether the Options item names are the same in Build 42.21: the wiki page is tagged 41.78.19.
- Any requirement change in the 42.22 Pre-Release: we did not read the full posts.
- Running on Mac and Linux: we only transcribed the official requirements and did not test on real machines.

Summary
- Official Windows requirements: 4-core 2.77GHz CPU, 8GB RAM, 10GB free, dedicated GPU with 4GB VRAM. There is no official recommended spec.
- Memory is set with the launch option "-Xmx<number>m --". The wiki's example is 8192m. It is safer not to set -Xms.
- If the picture is wrong or the game will not start, try -safemode. If it is slow, lower the graphics options one at a time and check.
