Project Zomboid Knapping and Carving: 390 XP Per Branch
Short answer: Knapping needs nothing but a plain Stone to start, and stone knives and stone axes are not Knapping or Carving recipes at all — you assemble them with Maintenance 1. Knapping chips the blade, Carving whittles the handle, and Maintenance binds the two into a tool.
For Carving XP, a recipe pays the same whether it outputs one handle or twelve. So the only thing that matters is how many items come out per craft. One Large Branch, turned into a Plank and then twelve Small Handles, yields 390 XP — about 2.8 times the 140 XP route the official wiki recommends. The full arithmetic is below.
This guide targets Build 42.21, released as Stable on 28 September 2026 (confirmed in the Steam news feed). Nothing in the 42.21 change list touches Knapping, Carving or stone tools, so the 42.20.4 behaviour carries over. All numbers come from the official wiki's generated recipe tables, and every page I used carries a version tag older than 42.21 — the list is at the end.
All you need to start is one Stone
Every Knapping recipe accepts any one of five tools:

You do not need to craft a hammer first. The one exception is the Stone Drill, which also wants a Stone Chisel or Mason's Chisel and lets you substitute any hammer or club hammer. Every Knapping recipe requires a crafting surface, so you cannot do this standing in a field.
Materials: foraging has no level requirement

To break a flint deposit, equip a Club Hammer, Sledgehammer or Stone Maul and right-click it. The deposit is destroyed but drops several Flint Nodules and Sharp Flint Flakes at once, which is far more reliable than the 1% forage roll.
The Sharp Flint Flake is also a knife — this is the hinge
Nearly every Carving recipe demands a sharp knife, and the Sharp Flint Flake itself counts as one. That makes the whole chain openable from nothing:
- Pick up a Stone
- Forage a Flint Nodule, or smash a flint deposit
- At a crafting surface, Knap Sharp Flint Flake (no skill required, 10 Knapping XP)
- That flake now satisfies the knife requirement, unlocking the Carving tree
The dependency runs both ways: Carving 1 crafts Knapping Tools (1 Antlers into 2, 10 Carving XP). Carving supplies Knapping's tool and Knapping supplies Carving's knife, so levelling them in alternation stalls less than pushing either alone.
Two cautions. Carving wants a knife that is not dull, and the tool degrades with use. A flake works, but a Stone Knife lasts longer for sustained sessions.
Knapping recipe ladder
Read "auto-learnt" as the level at which you learn the recipe without a magazine. It is not the level needed to craft it.

Knap Sharp Flint Flake occasionally yields a bonus flake, and the chance scales with Knapping, so your material yield improves as you level.
Measure XP per Flint Nodule
- Knapping 1-5: nodule into flake (10) into Stone Blade (20) = 30 XP
- Knapping 6+: nodule into Long Stone Blade (70), remade into Stone Blade (20) = 90 XP
Hitting level 6 triples the XP you get from the same nodule, because the long blade consumes the nodule directly and skips the flake step.
The wiki advises stopping Knapping at level 6, and the table shows why: no recipe requires more than 6. Levelling past it buys you nothing.

I used the recipe tables, which are generated from the game's recipe definitions rather than written by hand. In fairness, those tables sit on pages tagged 42.10.0, older than the 42.18.0 prose page, so this is not a case of picking the newer source. Both predate 42.21. Confirm the level in your own crafting menu.
Stone knives and stone axes are Maintenance recipes
Neither the Knapping nor the Carving category contains a stone knife or a stone axe. The assembly steps belong to Maintenance.

Any of six items counts as simple weapon binding: Rag, Twine, Leather Strips, Denim Strips, Burlap Piece or Duct Tape. A rag will do, so this is never the bottleneck.
Look at the stone knife's inputs: the blade is Knapping, the handle is Carving, and the assembly is Maintenance. Three skills have to meet before you hold one knife, which is why levelling any single skill never gets you there.
Stone axes can fell trees
Both the Crude Stone Axe and the Large Stone Axe count as tree-chopping tools. So you can clear trees without ever looting a metal axe — and once you can fell trees, the Large Branches that feed the Carving route below start arriving. Keep this path in mind for runs where no axe spawns.

Carving XP: 390 from one Large Branch
Carving hinges on how many Small Handles you can bank, because every Small Handle recipe pays 10 XP regardless of output count:

Running tree branches gives you a third of the handles a plank does, for identical XP on that step. Handles feed the spoon and fork steps, so the gap compounds.

The wiki's own recommendation is a different route worth 140 XP per Tree Branch — wooden rod (10) + four handles (10) + four spoons (40) + four forks (80). Using the same recipe-table values, the Large Branch route is roughly 2.8 times better per piece of wood.
It still wins before you know the fork recipe. Steps 1 to 3 alone give 150 XP, above the 140 the tree-branch route needs forks to reach.
The honest limits of that claim:
- This is XP per input item, not XP per hour. I did not compare how quickly you gather Large Branches versus Tree Branches
- Large Branches forage at skill level 0: 12% in Organic Forest, 10% in Forest, Deep Forest, Primary Forest, Birch Forest and Acidic Forest, 5% in Vegetation and Farmland, with a September-to-November bonus
- Step 1 needs Carving 2; step 4 needs Carving 2 and the fork recipe, learnt from Pioneering Carvers, researched from a fork, or auto-learnt at Carving 4
- The table values are base XP. Trait and skill-book multipliers apply on top, 390 included
- Knives degrade. One branch is 26 crafts, so sharpen or swap when it dulls
Do not saw the plank if Carving is the goal. Saw Large Branch needs no skill but pays 5 Carpentry XP and zero Carving. Step 1 has to be Carve Plank.
Three Carving recipes that need no skill

None of these need a crafting surface. The wiki's "sapling into long stick into spear for 10 XP" is simply the first two added together, and the spear doubles as early Spear and Maintenance progress.
Occupations, traits and skill books

Park Ranger and Bushcrafter each raise both skills. Taking both starts you at Knapping 2 and Carving 2, which already clears the Carving 2 gates in steps 1 and 4 above. Whittler's +2 is the largest single boost for Carving alone.
XP multipliers (these do not change starting level): Crafty 130%, Fast Learner 130%, Slow Learner 70%.
Both skills have five books covering levels 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10. Since Knapping stops mattering at 6, you can ignore Knapping IV and V.

Both skills have five books, covering the same level bands. Since Knapping stops mattering at 6, Knapping IV and V are safe to ignore.

- Pick up one Stone. That is your entire Knapping toolkit
- Forage a Flint Nodule, or break a flint deposit with a Club Hammer, Sledgehammer or Stone Maul
- At a crafting surface, knap a Sharp Flint Flake (no skill, 10 XP). It doubles as your knife
- Carve Small Handles from whatever wood you have most of
- Combine a Stone Blade (Knapping 1) + Small Handle + rag at Maintenance 1 for a Stone Knife
- No axe yet? Make a Crude Stone Axe (Tree Branch + flake + 2 bindings, Maintenance 1) and start felling trees
- Once Large Branches arrive, run the Carve Plank to 12 handles to spoons to forks route at Carving 2 for 390 XP a branch
- Stop Knapping at level 6. Switch to the 90-XP-per-nodule route to get there, then leave it
