Zomboid Glassmaking XP: Melting Is 0 XP, Wine Glass Is 90

SHAREXFacebookLINE

Short answer: melting glass gives no Glassmaking XP at all. XP comes only from making items out of the molten glass, and every item uses exactly one unit of it. So the same glass is worth 25 XP as a pane and 90 XP as a wine glass — a 3.6-fold difference.

Higher-XP recipes unlock as you level, so the route is almost fixed: glass pane (skill 0) → drinking glass (2) → bottle (3) → jar (5) → wine glass or lantern glass (7). Each recipe has to be learned from a magazine first. There are three magazines, and each unlocks two recipes.

This article is written for Build 42.21, which went to Stable on 28 September 2026 (confirmed on the official Steam news feed). The 42.21 changelist and the notes for hotfixes 42.20.1 to 42.20.4 contain nothing about glass, crucibles, furnaces, kilns or mirrors. That only rules out changes between 42.20.0 and 42.21, though. ★ The figures come from wiki pages whose version tags predate 42.21 (Glassmaking 42.18.0, recipe table 42.20.0, the three magazines and the molten-glass crucible 42.10.0, Simple Furnace 42.12.3, Skill 42.3.1). The pages themselves warn that they may be inaccurate for the current build, so check the numbers on the in-game crafting screen.

★ The XP-per-level table needs a stronger warning. The wiki’s Skill page gives it as the values for build 41.78.16. So the unit counts below are provisional estimates that apply the Build 41 XP requirements, not confirmed values. Per-recipe XP, required levels and ingredients, on the other hand, come from the Build 42 recipe table. That is why this article compares recipes by XP per unit of molten glass.

★ Melting gives 0 XP. Only making items does

Glassmaking has two stages: melt glass in a simple furnace, then make items from the molten glass. The recipe table lists:

StepIngredientsTools and stationXP
Melt Glass1 crucible + 6 Broken Glass + 1 fire starter + 1 charcoalSimple Furnace + tongs or crude tongs0
Melt Sand1 crucible + 1 unit of Sack of Sand + 1 fire starter + 2 charcoalSimple Furnace + tongs or crude tongs0

Both melts produce a Small Ceramic Crucible with Molten Glass and award 0 XP. Sand costs one more charcoal than broken glass. Picking up broken glass bare-handed can scratch you and lodge a shard (per the wiki’s Broken Glass page), so wear gloves when collecting it. Turning molten glass into objects is where all the XP comes from.

The recipes, compared by XP per unit of molten glass

Every making recipe uses exactly one unit of molten glass, so “XP per unit” is simply the recipe’s XP.

ItemSkill neededHow to learn (magazine / auto-learn)ToolsXP (per unit)
Glass PanenoneCarlow Crystal GuideCeramic Sheet Mold25
Drinking Glass2Carlow Crystal Guide / auto-learned at Glassmaking 4Glass Blowing Pipe + pliers45
Glass Bottle3Bottle Making at Home / auto-learned at Glassmaking 5Glass Blowing Pipe + pliers60

Wine Glass7Murano Glass Manual / auto-learned at Glassmaking 8Glass Blowing Pipe + pliers90
Lantern Glass7Murano Glass Manual / auto-learned at Glassmaking 8Glass Blowing Pipe + pliers90
Champagne Glass9No magazine. Auto-learned at Glassmaking 10Glass Blowing Pipe + pliers90

The station for all of them is a crafting surface. The mirror gives 50 XP, less than the bottle (60 XP) at the same skill 4, and it also needs a steel sheet. It is not a leveling recipe. The champagne glass gives the same 90 XP as the wine glass. It unlocks at level 9, but there is no XP reason to switch.

  • The pane’s 25 XP is the lowest, but it is the only item you can make at skill 0. It needs only a sheet mold — no blowing pipe or pliers
  • The skill requirement and the auto-learn level are different things. Drinking glass needs skill 2, but without reading the magazine you only learn it automatically at Glassmaking 4. To make it at level 2 or 3 you need the magazine
  • Glass panes are also an ingredient for wooden windows. Wooden windows take 4 glass panes + 2 planks + 4 nails and a hammer, and need Carpentry 5 (the wiki’s Glass Pane page)
  • Besides magazines and auto-learning, the recipe table also lists “Researchable from”. How that research works is not confirmed in this article

★ Three magazines, two recipes each

There are three recipe magazines, and each magazine’s own page lists two learned recipes.

MagazineRecipes unlockedLevels it covers
Magazine: Carlow Crystal GuideGlass Pane / Drinking Glass0–3 (25 and 45 XP)
Magazine: Bottle Making at HomeGlass Bottle / Glass Jar3–6 (60 and 75 XP)
Magazine: Murano Glass ManualWine Glass / Lantern Glass7 and up (90 XP)

★ The Glassmaking skill page lists only one recipe per magazine (Carlow = drinking glass, Bottle Making = bottle, Murano = wine glass). The three magazine pages each list two learned recipes, and the game data (LearnedRecipes) also holds two each. The skill page is out of date, so this article follows the individual pages. Where each magazine spawns is on its page’s Loot section; no spawn rates are quoted here because sandbox settings and elapsed days change them.

Preparing the equipment: pottery, masonry and smithing come first

Glassmaking cannot start on its own. Most of the equipment is the product of other skills.

You needHow you get itConditions and ingredients
Simple FurnaceBuild40 stone blocks + 1 concrete (concrete tag) + masonry trowel. Unlocked by the Medieval Blacksmithing magazine. No skill requirement (Simple Furnace page, 42.12.3)
CrucibleShape in pottery, fire in a kilnIn our pottery article (id 1298) the recipe table has the small crucible at Pottery 1, 1 clay + 0.2 sack of sand, 25 XP for shaping
Glass Blowing PipeShape in pottery, fire in a kilnSame article: Pottery 2, pottery bench, 2 clay + 250 mL water, 35 XP for shaping. The pottery bench needs Carpentry 5
Ceramic Sheet MoldShape in pottery, fire in a kilnThe clay sheet mold is 3 clay + a clay tool at the pottery bench in that article. Firing is “Fire Clay Sheet Mold”: fire starter + log + charcoal, 0 XP (Ceramic Sheet Mold page)
Pliers, tongs (or crude tongs)ToolsPliers may degrade. Either tongs or crude tongs will do

How to obtain the magazines around the simple furnace is covered in our smithing article (id 1279), and the firing step for the crucible, pipe and mold follows the kiln section of our pottery article (id 1298). In other words, glassmaking requires you to pass through Pottery 1–2, masonry (stone blocks) and a smithing magazine first. If glassmaking is your goal, raising pottery to 2 is the shortest route.

XP and unit counts (provisional, applying Build 41 XP requirements)

★ The XP requirements are the values the wiki’s Skill page gives for build 41.78.16. We have not confirmed they are the same in Build 42. Treat the unit counts as estimates. Each level is computed with the best-XP recipe available when you level up, rounded up, ignoring carry-over from the previous level. “With books” applies the skill book multipliers from the Skill page table (3x for levels 1–2, 5x for 3–4, 8x for 5–6, 12x for 7–8, 16x for 9–10), assuming the matching volume is read to the end.

Level gainedXP neededTotal XPRecipe used (XP per unit)Units (no books)Units (with books)
0→17575Glass Pane (25)31
1→2150225Glass Pane (25)62
2→3300525Drinking Glass (45)72
3→47501,275Glass Bottle (60)133
4→51,5002,775Glass Bottle (60)254
5→63,0005,775Glass Jar (75)405
6→74,50010,275Glass Jar (75)605
7→86,00016,275Wine Glass / Lantern Glass (90)676
8→97,50023,775Wine Glass / Lantern Glass (90)846
9→109,00032,775Wine Glass / Lantern Glass (90)1007
Total32,77540541

By this table, reaching level 10 takes about 405 units of molten glass without books and about 41 with them. That is roughly a tenfold gap, so finding the skill books first is worth a lot. The book multiplier rises in steps as you read (10% of the maximum for each 10% of the book), and each volume applies only to specific levels. There are five Glassmaking books: I “Glass: A History” for levels 1–2, II “From Sand to Glass: A Journey” for 3–4, III “Laboratory Manual of Glassblowing” for 5–6, IV “Secrets of the Carlow Crystal Makers” for 7–8, and V “Venetian Glass: An Electron Microprobe Analysis” for 9–10.

How many melts? Unconfirmed: units per melt

★ How many units a small crucible of molten glass holds cannot be settled, because the wiki’s figures disagree.

  • The recipe table shows each making step consuming “0.2 full items (1 unit)”
  • The crucible’s game data (retrieved at 42.20.0), however, is a drainable item with a use amount (UseDelta) of 0.25. From that we estimate four units when full. This is our own inference and we have not confirmed it in the game

If one melt really gives four units, the totals above come to about 102 melts without books (roughly 612 broken glass) and about 11 melts with books (roughly 66). If a melt does not give four units, these counts change. Broken glass has to be produced by breaking windows or glass items, so without books the supply looks like a heavy job. When melting sand, it is 1 unit of sand plus 2 charcoal.

Things that raise XP

  • Taking Artisan gives Glassmaking +1, starting you at level 1. At present, though, no occupation affects the starting level (per the wiki)
  • Crafty and Fast Learner raise the XP rate to 130%; Slow Learner lowers it to 70%
  • ★ The wiki does not say whether trait multipliers and skill-book multipliers multiply together. Do not build an estimate that multiplies them all

If in doubt, follow this order

  1. Raise pottery to 2. The crucible (Pottery 1), blowing pipe (Pottery 2) and sheet mold are pottery products
  2. Build a simple furnace. It needs the Medieval Blacksmithing magazine, 40 stone blocks, 1 concrete and a masonry trowel
  3. Find the Carlow Crystal Guide. It unlocks glass pane and drinking glass, which covers levels 0 to 3
  4. Raise Glassmaking from 0 to 2 with glass panes. Only a sheet mold is needed
  5. Switch to drinking glass at skill 2, bottles at 3 and jars at 5. Bottles and jars need the Bottle Making at Home magazine
  6. At skill 7, switch to wine glass or lantern glass. They need the Murano Glass Manual. This is the top 90 XP, and switching to champagne glass changes nothing
  7. Meanwhile look for the skill books (Glassmaking I–V). With and without books, the glass needed differs by about tenfold

What we could not confirm

  • How many units a small crucible of molten glass holds. Our estimate (four units) comes from game data and is unconfirmed in the game
  • The Build 42 XP requirements. The Skill page values are Build 41’s
  • Where each skill-book volume spawns, and how books multiply with traits. Not on the wiki
  • How “Researchable from” research works.
  • Whether the “Crucible” in the recipe table means only the small crucible or the large one too. The product is a small crucible of glass, so this article assumes the small one
  • Changes between each page’s version tag and 42.20.0, and after it. We checked that the 42.20.1–42.21 notes do not mention any of this, but changes from each page’s version up to 42.20.0 have not been ruled out here
