Standing before hunters in the Low Rank story of 'Monster Hunter Wilds' is the colossal Elder Dragon, Zo-Sia. Clad in a crystalline shell and unleashing the powers of fire and thunder as phases progress, this formidable monster will be the first major obstacle for many hunters. However, by understanding its ecology and attack patterns and accurately striking its weaknesses, a path to victory can certainly be found. This article thoroughly explains Zo-Sia's weaknesses, hitzones, recommended skills, and specific tactics.
Zo-Sia: Basic Information and Weaknesses
Zo-Sia is a large target monster that you will ultimately face in Low Rank as the story progresses. You will confront it in its dedicated field, the "Crystal Lands." Understand its elemental weaknesses and hitzones, and prepare thoroughly before challenging it.

Weakness and Hitzones
Zo-Sia's biggest weakness is Dragon element. It is especially effective on weak spots exposed by part breaks. In the early stages, it is covered by a hard crystalline shell, but repeatedly breaking it will allow you to proceed advantageously in combat.

Part Breaks, Rewards, and Focus Strikes
Zo-Sia has multiple breakable parts. Breaking the head and wings is particularly crucial for softening hitzones and significantly shortening the subjugation time. The tail can be severed, offering a chance to obtain rare materials.
- Head Break: Two stages of destruction are possible. The first stage breaks the shell, and the second breaks a horn. After breaking, it becomes the biggest weak spot, making it easier to knock down. It is the highest priority target for Focus Strikes. Rewards: "Zo-Sia Crystalline Shell," "Zo-Sia Dragonhorn," "Elder Dragon Gem"
- Wing Break: Both left and right wings can be broken. Breaking them reduces the frequency of its aerial attacks and increases attack opportunities. Actively target them with gunner weapons or those with long reach. Rewards: "Zo-Sia Crystalline Wing," "Elder Dragon Blood"
- Foreleg Break: Both left and right forelegs can be broken. Breaking them makes Zo-Sia more prone to tripping after rush attacks, etc. Rewards: "Zo-Sia Sharp Claw"
- Tail Sever: Can be severed with cutting-type attacks. This reduces the reach of its powerful sweeping attacks. Rare materials can only be obtained through carving from the severed tail. Rewards (Carve): "Zo-Sia Dragon Tail," "Elder Dragon Gem"
Zo-Sia's Attack Patterns and Countermeasures
The battle with Zo-Sia is divided into three phases based on its diminishing health. As phases progress, attacks intensify and elemental attacks are added, so understanding the movements of each phase is crucial.
Phase 1: Crystalline Shell State
This is its form at the start of combat. It primarily uses physical attacks, and its movements are relatively simple. The goal for this phase is to break the head and wing shells as quickly as possible.
- Crystal Charge: A direct linear charge attack. Its tells are easy to read, so dodge left or right. It can also be guarded.
- Tail Swipe: A wide-reaching sweep attack. There are two patterns: clockwise and counter-clockwise. Dodge by getting under its tail base or creating a large distance.
- Crystal Orb Breath: Zo-Sia fires multiple crystal orbs from its mouth. Crystals remain on the impact points for a while, dealing damage if touched. Identify the trajectory of the orbs and move into gaps.
Phase 2: Fire Element Unleashed
When its health drops below approximately 70%, parts of its body turn red-hot with a roar, and it begins to frequently use fire elemental attacks. This is where the real challenge begins.
- Flamethrower Breath: Zo-Sia sprays powerful flames forward. It can be guarded, but it heavily drains stamina, making "Guard Performance" skill Lv effective. If guarding is not possible, use an emergency dodge (dive).
- Blast Crystal Placement: Zo-Sia scatters timed blast crystals on the field. They explode after a few seconds, inflicting Fireblight. Move away from the placed crystals immediately. Don't forget to prepare "Nulberries."
- Wind Pressure [Large] Roar: This occurs reliably during phase transitions. There's a risk of taking follow-up attacks while immobilized by wind pressure, so "Windproof" skill Lv provides stability.
Phase 3: Thunder Element Unleashed
When its health drops below approximately 30%, it transitions to the final phase. Its wings glow bluish-white, and it begins to use thunder elemental attacks in addition to fire.
- Thunderbolt Breath: Zo-Sia fires a high-speed lightning beam from its mouth. It cannot be guarded against without "Guard Up" skill Lv. It has a tell where it pulls its head back significantly, so dodge horizontally immediately upon seeing it.
- Wide-Area Lightning Strike: Zo-Sia drops multiple lightning strikes randomly around itself. Blue-white warning circles appear on the ground, so calmly retreat outside the affected area.
- Electrified Charge: Zo-Sia charges while enveloped in lightning. Getting hit inflicts Thunderblight and makes you more susceptible to stun.
Strategy Tips and Recommended Gear/Skills
To consistently subjugate Zo-Sia, preparation is paramount. Gather the recommended skills and be mindful of key tactical points.
Utilizing Field Gimmicks
The combat field, "Crystal Lands," is dotted with giant crystals that explode when attacked with a Slinger. If Zo-Sia is near a crystal, hit it with Slinger ammo like "Stone" or "Sticky Ammo" to detonate it, dealing massive damage and guaranteeing a knockdown. This is particularly effective for breaking its outer shell in the early stages, so actively aim for it.
Recommended Gear and Skills
Elemental attacks from Phase 2 onwards are extremely fierce, making countermeasure skills essential. During the story progression, it's recommended to combine armor from the Uruk Series or Anjanath Series to activate skills.
- Fire Resistance / Thunder Resistance: Activating each up to skill Lv 3 significantly reduces elemental damage and nullifies elemental blights. These are top-priority skills to activate.
- Guard Up: Essential for guard-heavy weapon types like Lance, Gunlance, and Charge Blade. Allows you to block the Thunderbolt Breath in Phase 3.
- Windproof: With skill Lv 3 or higher, it nullifies wind pressure during phase transitions, creating valuable attack opportunities or recovery time.
- Evade Window: Recommended for weapon types without guards. With skill Lv 3-5, you can reliably evade various breaths and sweeps with invulnerability frames.
- Partbreaker: Effective for quickly destroying the crystalline shell in the early stages. Helps you progress smoothly through the initial part of the battle.
- Dragon Attack: Boosts the damage of Dragon elemental weapons, which are Zo-Sia's weakness.
Summary
Zo-Sia, the final target monster of Low Rank, is undoubtedly a formidable opponent. However, the source of its strength lies in its defensive crystalline shell and the diverse elemental attacks that change with each phase. The keys to victory are the following three points:
- Wielding Dragon elemental weapons and utilizing "Partbreaker" skill Lv and field gimmicks to quickly break parts in the early stages.
- Reducing incoming damage with "Fire Resistance" and "Thunder Resistance" skills Lv, maintaining stable combat.
- Identifying attack patterns in each phase and performing precise guards and dodges.
By implementing these countermeasures thoroughly, you will surely seize victory. Overcome Zo-Sia and advance into the more challenging world of High Rank (HR). High Rank (HR) individuals, unlocked at Hunter Rank 50 or above, await you with even greater strength.
