SHAREXFacebookLINE

Blackreach, a vast and beautiful underground cavern system, stretches beneath the world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Despite its ethereal beauty, it is a dangerous place, teeming with formidable enemies like Falmer and Dwarven automatons. This article provides a comprehensive guide to this crucial dungeon, visited during the main quest "Elder Knowledge", covering map strategies, side quests, and the greatest secret of all: how to summon the hidden dragon.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim does not have a seasonal system. The current latest version is the Skyrim Anniversary Edition. A major update released in December 2023 introduced the "Creations" platform, but it did not directly change Blackreach's content. This article is based on the latest information as of May 29, 2026.

How to Access Blackreach

To visit Blackreach for the first time, you must explore the deepest reaches of one of the three colossal Dwarven ruins scattered across Skyrim: Alftand, Raldbthar, or Mzinchaleft. If you are progressing through the main quest "Elder Knowledge", you will naturally find yourself clearing Alftand under the direction of Septimus Signus at the College of Winterhold. From any of these ruins, activating the Dwarven mechanism in the deepest part with the "Attunement Sphere" obtained during the quest "Discerning the Transmundane" will open the door to Blackreach.

Once you've entered Blackreach, be sure to activate the various elevators called "Great Lifts" found throughout the area. Activating these will allow you to travel directly between that surface location and Blackreach, making exploration of the vast cavern much easier going forward.

Quest Walkthrough Guide

Blackreach serves as the setting for both main and important side quests. Combat against tough enemies is unavoidable in both, so prepare thoroughly with plenty of healing potions and adequate equipment before venturing in.

Main Quest: "Elder Knowledge" and the Mystery of the Oculory

The objective of this quest is to retrieve an Elder Scroll hidden deep within the "Tower of Mzark" in Blackreach. Inside the tower is a massive Dwarven device called the "Oculory", which you must operate correctly.

  1. Place the "Blank Lexicon" received from Septimus into the control panel on the top floor of the Tower of Mzark.
  2. The control panel has multiple buttons. Press the right-hand buttons several times until the second pedestal from the right activates.
  3. Place the Lexicon on the activated pedestal and continue pressing buttons. The ceiling lenses will move, and light will converge.
  4. Once the light correctly reflects off the lenses and a light pattern appears on the floor, press the leftmost button. This will activate the device, and the Elder Scroll will appear in the center.
  5. Collecting the Elder Scroll and the now-inscribed "Runed Lexicon" will advance the quest.

Along the way, many powerful automatons, including Dwarven Centurions, will appear, so counter them with lightning magic spells or powerful two-handed weapons.

Side Quest: "A Return to Your Roots"

The side quest "A Return to Your Roots" begins either by discovering the corpse of the alchemist Sinderion and his journal at "Sinderion's Field Laboratory" on a small hill immediately upon entering Blackreach, or by harvesting the first naturally growing "Crimson Nirnroot."

The goal of this quest is to collect 30 Crimson Nirnroot, which grow only in Blackreach, and deliver them to Avrusa Sarethi at Sarethi Farm, south of Riften. A total of 44 Crimson Nirnroot exist within Blackreach, so you don't need to find every single one. Crimson Nirnroot emit a distinctive chime sound, similar to regular Nirnroot, and often grow near water. Relying on their sound will help you find them efficiently.

Upon completing the quest, you will receive a permanent ability as a reward: "Sinderion's Fortunate Discovery." This is an incredibly powerful effect that gives you a 25% chance to create an additional identical potion when crafting one through Alchemy, making it an essential ability for an alchemist Dragonborn.

Blackreach's Hidden Elements and Collectibles

The vast Blackreach conceals many secrets and valuable items beyond its quests.

Summon the Hidden Dragon Vulthuryol

Blackreach's biggest secret is the encounter with the ancient dragon, Vulthuryol. Here's how to make this hidden boss appear:

  • Head to "Silent City," located near the center of Blackreach.
  • In the center of Silent City, find the giant orb resembling a false sun hanging from the ceiling.
  • Face the orb and use a three-word "Unrelenting Force" Shout (fully charged in third-person view).
  • When the Shout hits, Vulthuryol will be summoned with a thunderous gong sound, and combat will begin.

Vulthuryol is extremely powerful, but defeating him will yield a Dragon Soul, bones, and scales. This dragon can only be summoned once, so approach the fight fully prepared.

Valuable Ores and Skill Books

Blackreach is also a treasure trove of minerals, with the most valuable being "Geode Veins" from which you can mine soul gems. Over 30 of these veins are scattered throughout the area, offering soul gems of all sizes, including Grand Soul Gems. This is a must-see for Dragonborn seeking to master Enchanting.

  • Geode Veins: Mine various soul gems.
  • Other Ore Veins: A wide variety of other ore veins exist, including Ebony, Moonstone, Gold, Silver, Iron, and Corundum.
  • Skill Books: Skill books can be found hidden in buildings and encampments discovered during exploration. For example, near the Silent City Catacombs, you can find "2920, MidYear, v6," which increases your Heavy Armor skill, and near the Raldbthar Great Lift building, you can find "The Warrior," which increases your Block skill.

Exploration Tips and Main Enemies

Blackreach is dimly lit and easy to get lost in, with many powerful enemies lurking. Torches or light magic spells like "Magelight" or "Candlelight" are essential for exploration.

  • Falmer: These blind enemies have excellent hearing, and their poison attacks are particularly troublesome. They often attack in groups, so deal with them one by one.
  • Chaurus Reapers: These giant, insect-like enemies are characterized by powerful poison breath and swift movements. It's safest to attack them from a distance with bows or magic spells.
  • Dwarven Centurions: These massive automatons boast overwhelming durability and attack power. Their high-temperature steam attack is especially lethal. Try to attack them from the sides or behind.
  • Giants: These creatures patrol specific areas. Their attacks are incredibly powerful, so if your level is low, it's wise to sneak past them rather than engage in unnecessary combat.

Conclusion

The colossal cavern of Blackreach, hidden beneath Skyrim, is not just a waypoint in the main quest. It's an incredibly rich location offering abundant collectibles, side quests with powerful rewards, and heart-pounding combat against a hidden dragon. While formidable foes like Falmer and automatons await, by utilizing the Great Lifts and exploring gradually, you are sure to discover its depths and allure. Prepare meticulously and aim for a complete conquest of this beautiful yet dangerous underground world.
