Project Zomboid Welding XP: Start at 1, Level 4x

SHAREXFacebookLINE

Short answer: the biggest decision you make about Welding happens at character creation. Project Zomboid applies a permanent XP-rate modifier based on your starting level in a skill. Start at 0 and you earn 25% of base XP forever. Start at 1 and you earn 100% — four times faster, permanently. You cannot put a point into a skill directly, though: starting levels come from occupations, and only two give Welding — Mechanic (+1) and Welder (+4). Worked through, reaching level 10 costs roughly 6 propane tanks from a level-0 start and about 1.4 from a level-1 start, on two assumptions flagged below. As for the grind itself: car wrecks do give XP, but at roughly 1.7 XP per unit of propane against 12.5 for the metal sheet loop.

Version: Build 42.20.4 (stable, 26 August 2026 — confirmed current on the Steam news feed). No welding mechanics changed in 42.20.1–42.20.4; 42.20.0 only adds welding SFX. Figures come from pzwiki.net and the recipe tables embedded in those pages. Those tables are generated from game files at 42.20.0, making them newer than the hand-written prose beside them — and the two disagree in places. Where they conflict, this guide follows the tables and says so.

The permanent starting-skill XP modifier

This is the mechanic most leveling guides skip, and it changes every number downstream. Your XP rate in a skill is fixed at character creation by the level you start with:

Starting level 0 1 2 3+
Actual XP gain 25% 100% 133% 166%
Relative rate 1x 4x 5.32x 6.64x

The 0 → 1 step is by far the largest jump. Going from 1 to 3+ only buys another 1.66x, so the first level dominates.

You cannot spend a point on Welding directly

Character creation does not let you allocate build points into skills. Starting levels come from occupations, and no trait grants a starting level in Welding — the wiki's trait section states explicitly that traits affect XP rate only and "have no effect on starting level." That leaves two occupations:

Occupation Cost Welding XP rate Also grants
Welder 4 points +4 166% Crafts metal items without recipe magazines; +10% junk when foraging
Mechanic 4 points +1 100% +4 Mechanics; Vehicle Knowledge; repairs all vehicle types without magazines; +33% junk when foraging
Anything else 0 25%

The Mechanic page spells this out: "+1 Welding … 100% Welding XP gain." So if you took Mechanic for the cars, you are already in the 4x Welding bracket without knowing it — and the two skills share a material source in car wrecks, so they pair naturally.

Conversely, on any other occupation your Welding is locked to the 25% bracket for that character. Starting level cannot be changed later, so if metal construction is part of the plan, it is a character-creation decision.

Two warnings. The "XP Boost" number shown in-game is wrong. The wiki flags this as a bug as of 42.13.1 and says to disregard the displayed value — the skill name's colour (gold / white / light grey / dark grey) is what tracks the real multiplier. Second, Strength and Fitness are exempt from this system entirely.

Everything below assumes the starting modifier and the skill-book multiplier stack multiplicatively. No source states that explicitly, so treat it as this guide's assumption.

Welding vs. Metalworking vs. Blacksmithing

The same word points at two different skills depending on when a guide was written.

What an old guide calls it What it is now Equipment
"Metalworking" in a Build 41 guide Welding — this article Propane torch, welding mask, welding rods
"Metalworking" in an early Build 42 guide Blacksmithing Furnace, forge, charcoal

The skill IDs are MetalWelding and Blacksmith, so the game has always kept them separate.

One Build 41 habit to drop: the wiki states that in B41 the skill rose from dismantling assorted metal objects and furniture, and that this is no longer true in B42 except for car wrecks, unless enabled in sandbox settings. Stripping every fridge in town gives scrap, not XP.

Three tools, three names for one of them

You need a propane torch, a welding mask, and — for construction only — welding rods. The torch appears under three names:

  • The wiki article is titled Welding Torch
  • The prose on that page calls it a propane torch
  • The item ID is Base.BlowTorch

All one item. A full torch holds 10 units of fuel (UseDelta = 0.1). The refill rule is where resources leak:

Refilling from a propane tank always costs 1/16 of the tank, regardless of how much fuel was left. Topping off a half-full torch costs exactly as much as filling an empty one, so run the torch dry before refilling. A full tank is 16 fills, or 160 units.

On the mask: per the Welder Mask page it gives 70 scratch and 50 bite defence — strong head protection — but also a −50% modifier to foraging. Wear it to work, take it off in the woods.

And welding rods cannot be crafted. No recipe produces them; they are loot only. That constraint shapes the rest.

Where the XP actually comes from

Sorted by base XP per unit of propane. The starting modifier and book multipliers scale every row equally, so the ranking here does not change:

Action Base XP Torch cost XP per unit Level Materials consumed
Build a Metal Wall Frame 20 1 unit 20.0 2 Steel Rod ×3, welding rods ×2 units
Metal sheet loop (Make Metal Sheet / Cut 4 Small Metal Sheets) 25 2 units 12.5 4 Returned by the round trip — see below
Build a Metal Floor 10 1 unit 10.0 0 Steel Sheet - Small ×1, welding rods ×1 unit
Cut Bar 10 1 unit 10.0 1 Iron / Steel Bar ×1
Build a Metal Wall (basic) 30 4 units 7.5 3 Steel Sheet - Small ×3, welding rods ×4 units
Dismantle a car wreck ~17 per 10 units 10 units ~1.7 0 None — it produces materials

The car wreck figure is the weak number here. It is not from a recipe table but a community estimate in the wiki's prose, in a section tagged for verification. Wrecks do grant XP — they are simply propane-inefficient as a grind. Every other row is game-file data.

Construction has the best XP per unit, but it burns welding rods. A wall frame is 20 XP for one torch unit, the best rate in the skill — and two units of irreplaceable welding rods. Grinding by building and demolishing frames exhausts the one resource you cannot make.

Crafting recipes use no welding rods at all. The sheet loop and Cut Bar need only fuel and the mask. So: build when you need a building, grind with crafting.

The metal sheet loop, and what is actually verified about it

Recipe Input Output Level Base XP Torch
Make Metal Sheet Steel Sheet - Small ×4 Steel Sheet ×1 4 25 2 units
Cut 4 Small Metal Sheets Steel Sheet ×1 Steel Sheet - Small ×4 4 25 2 units

Four small sheets make one large sheet; that sheet cuts back into four small ones. Same level, same 25 XP, same 2 units each way. On the recipe inputs and outputs alone, four small sheets are all the material the grind requires — 50 XP per round trip for 4 units of fuel. Neither recipe lists a workstation, so you can grind anywhere; the only tool is an item with the weldingmask tag.

This is read off the recipe data, not confirmed by play. The wiki recommends these same two recipes for levels 5–10 but never states that alternating them returns your materials. The recipe data does not expose failure chances or material loss on failure, so if failed crafts destroy inputs, the loop leaks. Run about ten round trips and count your small sheets before committing. If the count drops, this guide's premise is wrong for your build.

Reaching level 4

The loop needs level 4 plus recipe knowledge. Three ways to learn it:

  1. Read Magazine: Welder Monthly - March 1993 (MetalworkMag4).
  2. Reach level 6 for the auto-learn — but the recipe only needs level 4, so waiting costs you the two levels you wanted it for.
  3. Research a Steel Sheet or Steel Sheet - Small. Both appear under "Researchable from" in the recipe data, and the Crafting page lists recipes researched from items alongside magazines and level auto-learns.

Researching a sheet you already looted usually beats hunting the magazine.

  • Level 0 → 1: Cut Bar requires level 1, so the first 75 XP needs another source — wrecks, or a VHS that grants welding XP (Home Welding Guide +75, Adefope Fencing Special +112.5). Caveats: entertainment XP is capped at the first 3 levels, and whether the starting modifier or book multipliers apply to VHS XP is undocumented.
  • Level 1 → 4: Cut Bar. No magazine, no welding rods; needs a crafting surface and the mask. One bar cuts into two halves, each half into two quarters — three crafts, 30 base XP per bar.

The propane bill

Assumption first: the per-level XP requirements on the wiki's skill page are labelled Build 41.78.16 values, and I could not confirm they are unchanged in B42. They run 75 / 150 / 300 / 750 / 1500 / 3000 / 4500 / 6000 / 7500 / 9000, totalling 32,775. Book multipliers are ×3 (levels 1–2), ×5 (3–4), ×8 (5–6), ×12 (7–8), ×16 (9–10). All rows below assume every skill book is read.

The absolute totals rest on two unverified premises: (1) the B41.78.16 XP curve still holds in B42, and (2) the starting modifier and book multiplier multiply. If either is wrong the absolute numbers move — but the 0-versus-1 ratio of roughly 4x is a ratio of multipliers and survives regardless.

Start XP rate Stage Crafts Torch units Propane tanks
Level 0 25% 0 → 1 (wrecks) 59 0.4
1 → 4 (Cut Bar) ~104 104 0.7
4 → 10 (sheet loop) ~395 790 4.9
0 → 10 total 953 ~6 tanks
Level 1 100% 1 → 4 (Cut Bar) ~26 26 0.2
4 → 10 (sheet loop) ~99 198 1.3
1 → 10 total 224 ~1.4 tanks
Level 4 (Welder) 166% 4 → 10 (sheet loop) ~60 120 ~0.8 tanks

Six tanks versus 1.4 — the difference between any other occupation and Mechanic's starting Welding 1. That one starting level is worth several hundred crafts.

Skipping the books is far worse. At a level-0 start with no books, levels 4 → 10 alone come to roughly 5,040 crafts and 63 propane tanks. Treat the books as mandatory, not optional.

The five volumes are Welding I: "Basics of Welding" (1–2), II: "Building with Metal" (3–4), III: "Machining Metal: The Mass Genfac Guide" (5–6), IV: "Ore to Sheets: A Complete Metalworking Manual" (7–8), V: "Technological Fundamentals of Metal Fabrication" (9–10). You can only read the volume matching your current level, so an early Volume III does nothing.

The four magazines are numbered backwards

From the LearnedRecipes lines in the game files:

Magazine Item ID Unlocks
Welder Monthly - March 1993 MetalworkMag4 The sheet loop (Make Metal Sheet, Cut 4 Small Metal Sheets)
Welder Monthly - April 1993 MetalworkMag3 Fences and gates (11 recipes)
Welder Monthly - May 1993 MetalworkMag2 Storage and fittings (crates, lockers, shelves, counters — two levels each)
Welder Monthly - June 1993 MetalworkMag1 Walls, window frames, wall frames, floors, door frames, stairs

The numbering runs opposite to the months. Mag1 is June; Mag4 is March. Localised clients show volume numbers with no month at all, so guides citing months and item lists citing numbers point at opposite magazines. Match on what it unlocks, not the number.

Take June 1993 to wall in a base, March 1993 for the grind. They spawn on bookstore shelves, garage storage metal shelves, tool store counters and shelves, and in mail satchels and bags. Spawn percentages are omitted deliberately — the wiki notes loot spawns diminish with elapsed game time, and sandbox settings change them further.

Note too that the Welder occupation crafts metal items without any recipe magazine. Four points buys +4 Welding, the 166% XP bracket, and +10% junk while foraging — and removes the magazine hunt entirely.

The wiki contradicts itself on wall requirements

Three places give three different levels for metal walls.

Source Level 1 wall Level 2 wall
Welding page prose (page version 42.18.0) Welding 2 Welding 8
Metal Wall page prose "at least welding level 2"
Recipe table (game files, 42.20.0) Welding 3 Welding 5

Follow the recipe table. It is machine-generated from a newer version (42.20.0) than the prose (42.18.0). The HP table on the Metal Wall page independently agrees — values begin at welding 3 for the basic wall and welding 5 for the advanced one. And no recipe in the entire skill requires level 8; the highest is the level 2 Metal Crate at welding 7. The "8" matches nothing.

The "level 2" figure looks like a conflation with the Metal Wall Frame, which the table does put at welding 2. A metal wall must be built onto a frame, so the first step's requirement appears to have been recorded as the whole thing's.

In practice: welding 3 to wall anything, welding 5 for the upgrade.

Metal barricades bypass all of this

Barricading is not a construction recipe. The Welding Torch page states that the player can barricade doors and windows with metal sheets or bars, and that unlike constructing, barricading requires no welding rods and no learned recipes. Torch, mask and sheets are enough — no magazines needed.

  • Metal sheet barricades block line of sight — nothing sees in, and you cannot see out.
  • Metal bar barricades do not, so you can watch the street while holed up.
  • Removing a metal barricade requires the propane torch. No crowbar or hammer will do it, so leaving the torch behind when you relocate leaves the materials too.

Barricade HP depends on the material and on the builder's skill at the moment of placement, and cannot be upgraded or repaired — the only fix is to remove and re-apply. Barricades thrown up at welding 1 are worth redoing later.

Source caveat: the Barricade page carries page version 41.78.19 — still a Build 41 page. The "no rods, no recipe" part is corroborated by the B42-era Welding Torch page, but the line-of-sight and HP behaviour rests on the B41 page alone. Verify before building a base plan on it.

The short version

  1. Pick Mechanic or Welder at character creation. You cannot point a skill directly, and these are the only two occupations that grant Welding levels — Mechanic (4 points) for +1 and a 100% rate, Welder (4 points) for +4 and 166%. Anything else leaves you at 25%. Nothing else on this list comes close.
  2. Find and read Welding I. Without the books the cost changes by an order of magnitude.
  3. Reach level 1 on a VHS or some wrecks. It is 75 XP; do not over-invest.
  4. Levels 1–4: Cut Bar. Three crafts per bar, no magazine, no rods.
  5. Research a metal sheet rather than waiting for the March 1993 magazine or the level 6 auto-learn.
  6. Levels 4–10: the sheet loop — but count your sheets over the first ten round trips before committing.
  7. Dismantle wrecks for materials. They do give XP, just inefficiently; wrecks far from town are safer and the steel feeds blacksmithing.
  8. Welding 3 to build walls, 5 for the upgrade.
