Project Zomboid Vehicle Repair & Mechanics Skill Guide

SHAREXFacebookLINE

In a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world, 'vehicles' expand your range of action, allow you to transport large quantities of supplies, and sometimes enable escape from perilous situations. They can be a survivor's best companion. However, even if you find a working car, its upkeep and maintenance are far from simple. Engine trouble, flat tires, and running out of fuel constantly bring you close to death. This article, based on B41, thoroughly explains everything from the basics of vehicle maintenance to preparing for long-distance travel, ensuring your trusty car stays in top condition.

Project Zomboid does not have seasons. The current stable version is B41. Currently, the next major update, B42, has been released as an unstable (beta) version, and many new elements are being tested. Please note that while the information in this article is primarily based on B41, specifications may change in B42.

Start Here! Efficiently Leveling Your Mechanics (Vehicle Maintenance) Skill

To perform vehicle maintenance, you need the specialized "Mechanics" skill. While you can do very little at low levels, diligently gaining experience will eventually turn you into an expert capable of resurrecting even a dilapidated wreck. There are several tips for efficient skill leveling.

1. XP Boosts with Skill Books

First and foremost, read Mechanics skill books. Starting with 'Basic Vehicle Mechanics' and progressing to 'Intermediate' and 'Advanced' as your skill level increases will provide a powerful boost to the experience points you gain. The general strategy is to explore bookstores, school libraries, and house bookshelves, securing them as soon as you find them.

2. Attaching and Detaching Parts Even at Low Levels

Once you've read your skill books, start working immediately. The safest and most efficient method at low levels is repeatedly attaching and detaching the following parts:

  • Bulbs (Headlights, Brake Lights)
  • Battery
  • Radio
  • Seats

These parts can often be worked on with just a screwdriver, and there's very little risk of failure. An important point is the restriction that you can only gain experience from the same part on a single vehicle once per day. Therefore, the most efficient method is to find multiple abandoned cars and cycle through them, performing work. It's a good idea to secure several practice vehicles in a safe, zombie-free area.

3. Thoroughly Read "Raines Auto Manual" Magazines

To service specific parts (especially brakes and suspension, etc.), in addition to your Mechanics skill, you need to have read the corresponding vehicle type's service manual. There are three types: 'Raines Auto Manual - Standard Cars', '- Heavy Duty Cars', and '- Sports Cars'. Without reading these, you won't be able to perform work even if your skill level is sufficient. Prioritize searching for these alongside your skill books.

Vehicle Maintenance Basics and Required Skills: Keys to Survival

As your skills improve, you can tackle more serious maintenance. Here, we explain the essential knowledge, tools, and skill levels required for crucial maintenance tasks.

Essential Tools and Repair Fundamentals

For serious vehicle maintenance, the following basic tools are essential. Always keep a complete set at your base or load them into your maintenance vehicle.

  • Wrench: Used for many parts like engines, seats, and hoods
  • Screwdriver: For bulbs, batteries, radios, etc.
  • Jack: Essential for attaching/detaching tires, brakes, and suspension
  • Lug Wrench: Essential for attaching/detaching tires
  • Tire Pump: To restore tire pressure

Additionally, to repair metal parts like damaged hoods or doors from zombie collisions, you'll need the following extra items:

  • Propane Torch
  • Welding Mask
  • Metal Sheets

Engine Repair and Hotwiring (Starting Without a Key)

The engine is particularly important for vehicle use. The conditions for "hotwiring" to start an engine and for repairing the engine itself are as follows:

  • Hotwiring: Requires Electrical skill level 1 and Mechanics skill level 2. This skill is extremely useful as a last resort if you can't find a car key.
  • Engine Repair: Engines cannot be swapped from other vehicles; they can only be repaired on the spot. Dismantle engines from other vehicles to obtain "Engine Parts" and use them for repair. The required Mechanics skill level varies by vehicle type.
    • Standard Cars: Level 4
    • Heavy Duty Cars: Level 5
    • Sports Cars: Level 6
The higher your skill level, the more repair strength each "Engine Part" provides, allowing for more efficient repairs.

The Never-Ending Problem: How to Secure Gasoline

Even a perfectly maintained car is just a hunk of iron without fuel. Gasoline is a valuable resource constantly on the verge of depletion, requiring systematic procurement.

Using Gas Station Pumps

The easiest method is using gas stations. For a while after the game starts, power is supplied, allowing you to refuel your vehicle directly from the pump. However, after the inevitable power outage, the pumps become unusable unless you install a generator to supply power. When using a generator, ensure the surrounding area is safe before operating it, as its noise can attract a large number of zombies.

Siphoning from Other Vehicles

You can also siphon gasoline from the countless abandoned vehicles scattered across the map. With an empty container like a "Gas Can" in your inventory, open the V-key radial menu near a vehicle and select "Siphon Gas." It's impossible to tell from the outside which cars have fuel remaining, so the surest way is to get in and check the fuel gauge. While B41 allows siphoning with just a container, future B42 builds suggest that a specialized item like a hose might be required.

Into the Unknown! Tips for Long-Distance Travel

Abandoning a depleted base and seeking new territory through long-distance travel is one of the joys of Project Zomboid. Success or failure hinges on prior preparation.

Vehicle Selection and Final Check

For long-distance travel, vehicles with large trunk capacity and good fuel efficiency are suitable. Station wagons and large vans would be good choices. Before departing, always check "Vehicle Info" from the V-key radial menu to ensure all parts are in good condition. The following parts are especially important:

  • Engine: If its condition is poor, it risks stalling mid-journey, leaving you stranded in the middle of a zombie horde. Keep it as close to 100% condition as possible.
  • Hood: A hood in good condition protects the engine from minor collisions. If damaged, even a small impact can more easily cause direct damage to the engine.
  • Fuel Tank: If damaged, it will leak fuel, leading to unexpected fuel depletion.
  • Tires: Ensure all four tires are in good condition and fully inflated. Carrying 1-2 spare tires will help you cope with unexpected punctures.

Supplies and Route Planning

For long journeys, carrying sufficient supplies is essential. Starting with multiple full "Gas Cans," remember to load several days' worth of food and water, medical supplies for first aid, and weapons and ammunition for emergencies. Checking your map and pre-marking gas stations or buildings that could serve as temporary shelters along your route to your destination is also crucial preparation that significantly increases your survival rate.

Summary

In Project Zomboid, vehicles are more than just a means of transport. They are warehouses for supplies, shelters from danger, and powerful tools for opening up new possibilities. However, to maximize their potential, it is essential to diligently level up your Mechanics skill and not neglect daily maintenance. Utilize the knowledge introduced in this article to turn your trusty car into your best companion. With proper preparation and knowledge, you should be able to overcome any harsh road. Drive safely and survive the apocalypse.
