Arkveld, the Chainblade Wyvern, reigns as the main large monster in the world of Monster Hunter Wilds. Its overwhelming massive body and fierce chain-based attacks, which freely traverse the field, have likely troubled many hunters. However, even the mightiest large monster always has weak points and a path to victory. This article thoroughly explains everything you need to know to succeed in your hunts, from Arkveld's weak points, hitzones, and dangerous attack countermeasures, to dedicated strategies for the "Arch-Tempered" variant, an end-game challenge.

Arkveld's Weak Points, Hitzones, and Key Strategy Points

The key to conquering Arkveld lies in consistently targeting its weak points, which are susceptible to physical damage, and seizing the significant opportunities that arise after specific attacks. Since elemental damage is largely ineffective, an equipment build focused purely on physical attack power is recommended.

Weak Points in Normal State

Arkveld's weak points are its "head" and the "Chainblade Wings," which are massive blades integrated with its wings. These parts are susceptible to damage from cutting, blunt, and projectile attacks, regardless of weapon type. The head, in particular, makes it easier to achieve a knockdown, so aim to attack it actively. However, Arkveld's head is positioned high, and its movements are swift, making it difficult to target continuously. The basic strategy involves aiming for the "Chainblade Wings," which are relatively easier to hit, while focusing attacks on the head during openings such as knockdowns or roars.

Regarding Elemental Damage

As mentioned, Arkveld possesses high resistance to all elements. Non-elemental weapons or weapons with enhanced physical attack power will likely deal damage more efficiently. The sole exception is the "Chainblade Wings," which temporarily soften after the major attack "Chainblade Unleash" (detailed below), becoming slightly susceptible to Dragon element (elemental hitzone value of 25). If you are wielding a Dragon-element weapon, make sure to capitalize on this opportunity.

Key to Special Knockdown: The "Chain" Wound

The most crucial element in conquering Arkveld is the "Chain" wound, a weak point that allows for a special knockdown. This wound is exposed near the base of a chain stuck in the ground after specific major attacks (such as Chain Slam or Chainblade Unleash). By dealing a certain amount of damage to this wound, Arkveld will be knocked down for an extended period, creating the greatest attack opportunity. Delivering high-damage combos to its head or Chainblade Wings during this knockdown is essential for reducing hunt times.

Major Attack Patterns and Countermeasures

Arkveld's attacks are characterized by speed unbefitting its massive size and wide-ranging chain attacks. Carefully observe its tells, and aim for precise evasion and counterattacks.

  1. Chain Sweep (Forward / Omnidirectional)
There are two patterns: a sweep targeting hunters in front, and an omnidirectional sweep performed while spinning around itself. Both have very wide attack ranges, so upon seeing the tell, either create significant distance or utilize skill "Evade Window" to attempt a frame perfect dodge. A small opening emerges after the attack, creating a chance to attack its hind legs or tail.
  2. High-Speed Charge Combo
An attack where Arkveld locks onto a hunter and charges at high speed. Even after one evasion, it can quickly change direction and unleash 2-3 consecutive charges. Due to its high tracking capability, the basic strategy is to continuously evade sideways. An emergency evade (dive) is also a valid option, but be careful not to be hit by the next attack upon recovery.
  3. Chainblade Slam
Arkveld flies into the air and slams its Chainblade Wings down onto the hunter's location. A large shockwave emanates from the impact point. Watch the shadow's movement carefully and move significantly just before the slam to evade. After this attack, a "wound" on the chain may be exposed in the ground, making it an excellent opportunity to aim for a knockdown.
  4. Major Attack: "Chainblade Unleash"
Arkveld's most powerful attack. After roaring towards the sky, it releases stored energy from its Chainblade Wings in all directions. The attack range covers a wide area of the field, so upon seeing the tell, immediately sheath your weapon and sprint out of the area, or prepare with a "Nulberry" or "Adamant Seed." After this major attack, Arkveld becomes greatly exhausted, and its Chainblade Wings soften, while the "Chain" wound is also guaranteed to be exposed. This is your biggest chance, so ensure you've healed and sharpened your weapon beforehand.

Effective Use of Part Breaks and Focus Strike

Part Break Priority and Rewards

  • Head Break: The breaking of its horn is the indicator of a successful head break. Success may yield rare materials such as "Chainblade Wyvern Sharp Horn." Additionally, after the break, it becomes easier to flinch, increasing opportunities for knockdowns.
  • Tail Severing: The tail can be severed by continuously attacking it with cutting weapons. "Chainblade Wyvern Tough Tail" is a valuable material obtainable only by carving from the severed tail. After severing, the reach of its tail-based attacks shortens, making combat positioning more stable.

Effective Parts for Focus Strike (Focus mode)

Although "Focus Strike" is not confirmed as an official system name in the game, a special flinch system known as "Focus mode" exists. This is triggered by attacking Arkveld's mouth when it glows during specific actions (e.g., energy charges like a breath attack). If successful, it can interrupt a major attack and inflict a special, long knockdown. The timing is very precise, but a successful Focus Strike can significantly turn the tide of battle, so actively try to aim for it when using bowgun-type weapons or weapons with long reach.

Arch-Tempered Arkveld Strategy and Countermeasures

Appearing as an end-game challenge, "Arch-Tempered Arkveld" boasts a strength on a different level compared to its regular counterpart. Its attack power, health, and speed are significantly enhanced, and some attack patterns are altered or added, making dedicated countermeasures essential.

Most Important Countermeasure: Dragonblight

Arch-Tempered Arkveld's attacks have an added effect that inflicts Dragonblight. When afflicted with Dragonblight, your weapon's elemental and status ailment values are nullified. Even against Arkveld, which is already resistant to elemental damage, this is an extremely dangerous status ailment as it significantly reduces the damage output for some weapon types. To counter this, activate "Dragon Resistance" skill Lv 3 to ensure your Dragon Resistance value is 20 or higher. This will nullify Dragonblight. For emergencies, always bring "Nulberries" as well.

Recommended Skills and Combat Strategy

To withstand Arch-Tempered Arkveld's fierce attacks, prioritize survival skills such as "Health Boost," "Divine Blessing," and "Stun Resistance." While damage skills are also important, the first step to victory is to assemble an equipment set that prevents being one-shot. As attacking the "Chain" wound to achieve a knockdown is even more crucial than with the regular variant, make sure to utilize "Mega Barrel Bombs" during knockdowns to efficiently rack up damage.

Summary

Conquering Arkveld, the Chainblade Wyvern, is a significant goal in Monster Hunter Wilds. The keys to victory are summarized in the following three points:

  • Accurately target its physical weak points: the "head" and "Chainblade Wings."
  • Attack the "Chain" wound during the opportunity after a major attack to achieve a special knockdown.
  • When fighting the Arch-Tempered variant, activate "Dragon Resistance" skill Lv 3 to ensure full protection against Dragonblight.

By keeping the points introduced in this article in mind and preparing optimal equipment and items, you will surely be able to defeat the formidable Chainblade Wyvern. Good luck, hunters!
