MHWs Survival & Defense Skills Tier List: Solo/Multiplayer Priority Guide
Updates are being distributed in the form of seasons and Title Updates (TU). Ver.1.042.00.00 was released on August 4, 2026. Furthermore, the major expansion "Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance" is scheduled for release in 2027. This article is a strategy guide based on current information. With the tempered large monsters in the High Rank (HR) 100+ high-difficulty quests, commonly known as "★9 Quests," added in Ver.1.021, many hunters are likely being sent back to camp by their fierce attacks. In Monster Hunter Wilds, stable hunting is difficult by simply stacking damage skills. This article focuses on "survival and defense skills" to help you survive the harsh environment and thoroughly explains the recommended skills for the current meta in a ranking format.
Importance of Survival & Defense Skills and Basic Selection
In this game, especially when fighting tempered large monsters in the endgame, a single hit can deal enormous damage. Therefore, skills that help withstand attacks by increasing health and defense, and aid in recovery after being hit, are extremely important. The basic principle of skill selection is to first "avoid instant death." After that, the strategy is to add skills that match your playstyle and preferred weapon.
Differences in Approach for Solo vs. Multiplayer
In solo play, as the large monster's attention is constantly on you, a self-sufficient skill build centered around evasion and damage reduction is required. In contrast, for multiplayer, skills that help allies in addition to yourself become viable options. Support skills like "Wide-Range," in particular, significantly improve the overall team's survival rate, making them highly valuable.
Balance with Damage Skills
When you invest in survival skills, you have less room for damage skills. However, the biggest cause of quest failure is "3 carts." Therefore, securing stability with survival skills first, then filling empty slots with damage skills using Decorations/Jewels and Charms, is the shortcut to conquering high-difficulty quests. Especially if you can obtain a Charm with powerful survival skills, which have random properties, your equipment build freedom will dramatically increase.
[Overall] Recommended Survival & Defense Skill Ranking
Here, based on versatility and importance, we introduce the recommended survival and defense skills for the current meta in a ranking format. Evaluations are given in four stages: S, A, B, and C.
[S Rank] Must-Have Skills to Prioritize
Health Boost
The most fundamental survival skill, prioritized in every build. It increases the health cap by up to 50, making it an essential condition to withstand instant-KO attacks from tempered large monsters.
| Skill Name | Max Skill Lv | Effect | Recommended Skill Lv |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health Boost | 3 | Skill Lv1: Health +10 Skill Lv2: Health +25 Skill Lv3: Health +50 | 3 |
Evaluation and Commentary
- Evaluation: S
The strongest survival skill that is never useless, regardless of weapon type or playstyle. Especially when using "Artian weapons" with in-progress custom upgrades, this skill is fundamental for compensating for defensive shortcomings. It's no exaggeration to say that Health +50 at Skill Lv3 contributes more to survival than any other skill. Since the "Vitality Jewel" Decoration/Jewel is relatively easy to obtain, prioritize reaching Skill Lv3.
Stun Resistance
A skill that nullifies the stun status when taking consecutive hits. In high-difficulty quests, the "stun → follow-up attack → cart" combo is very common, making the value of this skill, which completely prevents it, immeasurable.
| Skill Name | Max Skill Lv | Effect | Recommended Skill Lv |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stun Resistance | 3 | Skill Lv1: Reduces stun duration by 50% Skill Lv2: Reduces stun duration by 80% Skill Lv3: Prevents stun status entirely | 3 |
Evaluation and Commentary
- Evaluation: S
One of the most effective skills for preventing accidental deaths. It is particularly effective against fast-moving large monsters or those that frequently use area-of-effect attacks. Since it completely nullifies stun at Skill Lv3, it is absolutely recommended to activate it at Skill Lv3. Its excellent cost-performance, being activatable with a 1-slot "Steadfast Jewel" Decoration/Jewel, is also appealing.
[A Rank] Skills That Significantly Improve Stability
Divine Blessing
A skill that significantly reduces damage taken by chance. While it relies on luck, the benefit when it activates is immense, often saving you from critical situations.
| Skill Name | Max Skill Lv | Effect | Recommended Skill Lv |
|---|---|---|---|
| Divine Blessing | 5 | Reduces damage taken by chance Skill Lv1: Activation Rate Approx. 15%, Damage 30% Reduction Skill Lv3: Activation Rate Approx. 25%, Damage 50% Reduction Skill Lv5: Activation Rate Approx. 35%, Damage 60% Reduction | 3 or 5 |
Evaluation and Commentary
- Evaluation: A
With the Ver.1.021 update, the skill Lv cap was unlocked, allowing activation up to Skill Lv5. Stacking up to Skill Lv5 results in a high activation rate, drastically suppressing damage taken. If you can secure Skill Lv3 or higher with Charms or armor, this skill is highly recommended for adoption.
Evade Window
A skill that extends the invincibility frames during evasion. It is highly compatible with weapon types whose main playstyle involves "frame-evading" large monster attacks.
| Skill Name | Max Skill Lv | Effect | Recommended Skill Lv |
|---|---|---|---|
| Evade Window | 5 | Extends invincibility during evasion actions | 3 or 5 |
Evaluation and Commentary
- Evaluation: A
Excellent compatibility with weapons that have actions designed to counter enemy attacks, such as Dual Blades, Lance, and Charge Blade. It allows for consistent frame-evasion of difficult-to-deal-with attacks like roars and sweeps. While it demands player skill, if mastered, it is a powerful skill that can significantly reduce damage taken.
[B Rank] Skills That Shine in Specific Situations or Builds
Wide-Range
A skill that can be considered multiplayer-exclusive, as its effects apply to allies within a certain range when you use a recovery item. Essential if you aim to be a healer.
| Skill Name | Max Skill Lv | Effect | Recommended Skill Lv |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wide-Range | 5 | When using certain items, effect applies to allies in the same area Skill Lv1: Applies 1/3 of the effect Skill Lv3: Applies 2/3 of the effect Skill Lv5: Applies the same effect | 5 |
Evaluation and Commentary
- Evaluation: B (S in Multiplayer)
While completely ineffective in solo play, this skill can be the lifeline of a team in multiplayer. It has excellent synergy with weapons that can use items without sheathing, such as the Sword & Shield. When allies are in trouble due to the fierce attacks of tempered large monsters, simply having a healer who can instantly restore health dramatically increases the quest success rate.
[By Playstyle] Recommended Skill Builds
Here, we introduce concepts for skill builds tailored to solo and multiplayer playstyles.
Recommended Build for Solo Play
In solo play, you are solely responsible for your own survival. Therefore, skills directly related to survival are prioritized.
- Essential Skills: Health Boost Skill Lv3, Stun Resistance Skill Lv3
- Recommended Skills: Divine Blessing Skill Lv3~5, Evade Window Skill Lv3~5, Defense Boost Skill Lv4~
- Playstyle: This build focuses on utilizing Evade Window to frame-evade large monster attacks, and enduring hits with Health Boost and Divine Blessing in case of damage. Stun Resistance prevents carts from follow-up attacks after being hit, ensuring stable gameplay.
Recommended Build for Multiplayer (Support Type)
In multiplayer, assisting allies indirectly contributes to your own survival. Here, we provide an example of a healer-specialized build.
- Essential Skills: Wide-Range Skill Lv5, Speed Eating Skill Lv3, Health Boost Skill Lv3
- Recommended Skills: Divine Blessing Skill Lv5, Free Meal Skill Lv3, Item Prolonger Skill Lv3
- Playstyle: This build focuses on healing allies with Wide-Range and increasing your own item usage speed with Speed Eating. "Free Meal" can save valuable Mega Potions and Max Potions by having a chance to not consume items. Having just one hunter with this build can dramatically increase the party's stability.
Summary
We hope you now understand the importance of not just damage skills, but also survival skills, in the high-difficulty quests of Monster Hunter Wilds. If you obtain a powerful Charm, building an ideal setup that balances both survival and damage is not just a dream. In the major expansion "Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance," scheduled for release in 2027, even more powerful large monsters and skills are anticipated.
