The Frozen Peak Dragon Jin-Dahad, the apex predator reigning over the majestic "Icy Mist Cliffs" in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its colossal size and absolute zero attacks have submerged many hunters into icy depths. However, understanding its ecology and behavioral patterns will surely reveal a path to victory. This article thoroughly explains everything about Jin-Dahad, from its elemental weaknesses and hitzones, dangerous attack countermeasures, to tips for crucial part breaks necessary for its defeat.

Jin-Dahad Basic Information and Weaknesses

Jin-Dahad is a large monster of the Leviathan species, known as the "Frozen Peak Dragon". It manipulates super-low temperature cold, capable of freezing wide areas, making countermeasures against Iceblight essential. The key to strategy lies in efficiently dealing damage with its fire elemental weakness and destroying its unique cooling organs called "Frozen Shells".

Elemental & Status Ailment Resistances and Hitzones

Jin-Dahad's biggest weakness is fire. Its head, in particular, has soft hitzones, making it highly susceptible to fire elemental damage. Other parts are relatively hard, so precise targeting of weaknesses is crucial. Refer to the hitzone table below to focus your attacks on the appropriate body parts.

Part Breaks and Basic Tactics

The most crucial aspect of the Jin-Dahad strategy is destroying the four "Frozen Shells," its cooling organs located across its body. Breaking these will weaken the monster, making the hunt significantly easier.

Part Break Priority and Rewards

The "Large Frozen Shell" on its back is extremely hard in its initial state and takes very little damage. However, if you destroy all three other Frozen Shells (head, waist, tail), a mechanic causes its hitzones to soften. Therefore, targeting breaks in the following order is most efficient:

  • Priority 1: Head (Frozen Shell)
The softest weak point. Breaking it makes the monster prone to stuns, creating significant attack opportunities. Main Reward: "Frozen Peak Dragon Hardhead Shell"
  • Priority 2: Waist (Frozen Shell)
Easily attackable from the sides, a relatively safe part to target for a break. Breaking it narrows the range of some sweeping attacks. Main Reward: "Frozen Peak Dragon Heavy Shell"
  • Priority 3: Tail (Frozen Shell)
Can also be severed by attacking with severing damage. Has the benefit of shortening the reach of its spinning attacks. Main Reward: "Frozen Peak Dragon Tough Tail"
  • Priority 4: Back (Large Frozen Shell)
Focus attacks here after destroying the other three parts. Successful destruction significantly weakens its ultimate move, "Ice Nova" (detailed below), and grants a longer duration stun. Main Reward: "Frozen Peak Dragon Cooling Core"

Basic Tactics and Focus Strike

Due to its large size, Jin-Dahad has a wide attack range, but many of its telegraphs are relatively large, so always pay close attention to the monster's movements. The basic strategy is to attack its sides or hind legs after evading its attacks, then target its weak point, the head, during stuns or large openings. Iceblight rapidly depletes stamina, so either build "Ice Resistance" skill Lv3 or always bring "Nullberries".

The new 'Focus Strike' action in 'Wilds' is effective for targeting its weak point, the head, or the Frozen Shells on its waist and tail that you aim to break. During stuns, in particular, unleashing Focus Strikes on its head can inflict significant damage. The softened back also becomes an excellent target.

Major Attack Patterns and Countermeasures

Many of Jin-Dahad's attacks are ice-elemental and high-powered, requiring caution. Learn to identify its telegraphs and master appropriate countermeasures.

  1. Frost Breath
An attack where it spews a fan-shaped or linear ice breath forward. The telegraph is its chest glowing white. Since it has long range, upon seeing the telegraph, immediately evade by moving to Jin-Dahad's side or under its body.
  2. Body Press / Slam
An attack where it uses its massive body to jump up and crush hunters. The landing spot is indicated by its shadow, so upon seeing the telegraph, either create a large distance or, if confident in invincibility frames, evade by rolling through its legs. The opening after this attack is relatively large.
  3. Ice Shard Volley
An attack where it rakes the ground with its forelegs, sending multiple ice shards forward. Inflicts damage along with Iceblight. Can be evaded with side steps.
  4. Ice Nova (Cataclysmic explosion)
Jin-Dahad's biggest ultimate move. After a long charge where it crouches and gathers cold air, it unleashes a wide-area, instant-death-level ice explosion. Once the charge begins, sheathe your weapon and hide behind the large ice pillars scattered across the field. If you can't make it, you can emergency evade by opening your map and fast traveling to camp. This attack's power can be significantly reduced by destroying the Large Frozen Shell on its back.

Recommended Weapons, Skills, and Items for Strategy

Thorough preparation greatly influences the success rate of hunting Jin-Dahad. Equip gear that exploits its weaknesses and gather items to aid your survival before challenging it.

Recommended Weapon Types

Fire elemental weapons that can precisely exploit its weaknesses are highly recommended.

  • Dual Blades / Sword & Shield: Highly mobile weapon types that can easily rack up elemental damage with numerous hits. Suited for tactics that stick close to Jin-Dahad's feet and precisely break its Frozen Shells.
  • Long Sword: A good match, as it allows you to counter-attack while evading attacks with Foresight Slash and Special Sheathe. Aim Helm Breaker or Spirit Roundslash at its weak point, the head, or its softened back.
  • Light Bowgun: Can deal consistent damage by rapid-firing Fire Ammo from a safe distance. Targeting the head or the softened back, in particular, allows for efficient hunts.

Recommended Skills

  • Fire Attack: A top-priority damage skill to exploit its weakness.
  • Ice Resistance: Skill Lv3 is recommended to nullify Iceblight. Dramatically improves survival rate.
  • Partbreaker: Speeds up the destruction of Frozen Shells, giving you an advantage in combat.
  • Health Boost / Divine Blessing: Since its attacks hit hard, having these as insurance provides peace of mind.

Effective Items and Environmental Exploitation

  • Hot Drinks / Nullberries: Essential items for the Icy Mist Cliffs. Be sure to register Nullberries to your shortcut palette.
  • Flash Bomb: Can be used to knock Jin-Dahad down when it's climbing walls, creating significant attack opportunities.
  • Shock Trap: Restricts its movement, creating opportunities for part breaks or focused attacks. The duration is shorter when it's enraged, so choose your timing carefully.
  • Environmental Exploitation (Falling Ice Chunks): There are several huge ice chunks on the ceiling of the field. By hitting them with your Slinger when Jin-Dahad is directly beneath, you can make them fall, dealing great damage and causing a stun. Actively aim for these.

Summary

While the strategy for the Frozen Peak Dragon Jin-Dahad might seem daunting at first, it is far from unbeatable if you grasp the key points.

  • Prepare fire elemental weapons that exploit its weakness
  • Destroy the "Frozen Shells" in the order of Head → Waist → Tail → Back
  • Always evade the instant-death "Ice Nova" with cover or fast travel
  • Ensure full countermeasures against Iceblight

Keep these points in mind and challenge yourself to hunt the master of the Icy Mist Cliffs. Good luck!
