Helldivers 2: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Spreading Democracy
【Helldivers 2 Strategy Guide】
This article contains information as of June 23, 2026. Helldivers 2 does not have a clear seasonal system; content is added in the form of "Warbonds." Recent Premium Warbonds include "Cutting Edge" (released January 27, 2026) and "Steeled Veterans" (released March 17, 2026).
Welcome to Super Earth, recruits! A noble mission to bring the light of democracy to the galaxy awaits you. This guide is a handbook for all Helldivers—from soldiers new to TPS (Third-Person Person Shooters) to those unsure how to face galactic threats—to become full-fledged heroes. Equip yourselves, trust your comrades, and dedicate yourselves to Managed Democracy!
Basic Game Flow and Co-op Etiquette
In Helldivers 2, coordination with your comrades is the key to mission success. First, let's go over the basic flow for completing a mission.
- Briefing and Drop Preparation: Select a mission from the Galactic Map on the bridge of your Super Destroyer. Confirm mission details and decide on your equipment and Stratagems. Once ready, board your Hellpod and drop onto the battle planet!
- Objectives and Exploration: After dropping, open your map to locate and complete primary and secondary objectives. Along the way, you may find enemy outposts or valuable "Samples." Samples are essential for upgrades (discussed later), so actively collect them.
- Extraction: Once all primary objectives are complete, an extraction point will appear on your map. Upon reaching the extraction point, request the shuttle. Survive the enemy's intense assault for a few minutes until the shuttle arrives, and the mission is complete.
Two rules are particularly important in co-op during this process:
Be Mindful of Friendly Fire
In this game, "friendly fire"—where your allies' bullets and bombardments can hit you—is always active. Always check for allies in your line of fire, and be sure to warn your teammates in advance, especially when using explosive Stratagems. Accidental fire can lead to team annihilation.
"Reinforce" to Call Back Allies
If an ally falls, it's not the end. By using the "Reinforce" Stratagem, you can bring them back to the front lines repeatedly. When someone goes down, it's a Helldiver's ironclad rule to quickly call for reinforcements from a safe location.
Survive the Early Game! Recommended Gear and Stratagems
Choosing the right gear is essential to surviving your missions. Here, we introduce a basic equipment setup that new recruits should prioritize.
Recommended Primary Weapons
The starting weapon, the "AR-23 Liberator," is an excellent assault rifle with a balanced combination of power, fire rate, and accuracy. Its versatility allows it to handle any situation, and you can fight effectively with just this weapon until you get used to the game. Once you've accumulated enough Warbond Medals, aim to unlock the "SG-225 Breaker" shotgun, available later in the free Warbond. With high power and fire rate, it's a powerful weapon capable of mowing down approaching enemy hordes.
Reliable Early-Game Stratagems
Stratagems are a Helldiver's lifeline. We recommend equipping the following four as a basic set:
- EAT-17 Expendable Anti-Tank (Support Weapon): A two-shot disposable rocket launcher. Its call-in time is very short (just 2 seconds), allowing for immediate response to heavily armored large enemies. Its cooldown is also short, making its quick availability its greatest strength.
- Eagle Airstrike (Offensive): Bombards a designated area in a straight line. Highly effective for clearing enemy outposts or large groups. It has limited uses but is resupplied when you return to your ship.
- Gatling Sentry (Defensive): An automated turret that attacks enemies. Useful in a wide range of situations, such as defending extraction points or protecting your rear while completing objectives.
- Reinforce (Resupply): As mentioned, this is an essential Stratagem for calling back fallen allies.
Using this as a base, you can swap in other options like the "Anti-Materiel Rifle" or "Orbital Gatling Barrage" depending on mission objectives and enemy factions.
Armor Selection to Increase Survival Rate
While armor's defense and movement speed are important, the passive skills (perks) it provides significantly impact survival. The following two are recommended for the early game:
- Med-Kit: Increases the number of stims you can carry by 2 and extends their effect duration by 2 seconds. This significantly boosts your survival rate by increasing healing opportunities.
- Democracy Protects: When taking lethal damage to the chest, there is a 50% chance to survive (leaving you with 1 health). This is truly the blessing of democracy, saving your life from unexpected blows.
Faction-Specific Basic Tactics Guide
There are two main types of threats rampant in the galaxy. Understanding each of their characteristics and adjusting your tactics accordingly is crucial.
Against the Terminids (Nickname: Bugs)
These insectoid aliens swarm in overwhelming numbers. Smaller enemies use sheer volume, while larger enemies corner Helldivers with thick armor. The basic tactic is role division: one role handles small hordes with weapons like the "SG-225 Breaker," machine guns, or flamethrowers, while another focuses on destroying the armor of large enemies (like Chargers) with the "EAT-17 Expendable Anti-Tank" or "Recoilless Rifle." Flame-attribute weapons are particularly effective against many Terminids, so use them proactively.
Against the Automatons (Nickname: Bots)
These mechanical lifeforms excel at accurate long-range shooting. Always be mindful of cover and prioritize fighting from concealment. Many Automatons have glowing red weak spots (like their heads or exhaust ports on their backs), which can be efficiently destroyed with precise shots. The "Anti-Materiel Rifle" and energy weapons are highly effective. Don't forget to prioritize eliminating "Devastators" with glowing red guns to prevent them from calling in enemy reinforcements.
To Greater Heights! Growth Elements and Goal Setting
The fight of a Helldiver isn't just about completing missions. Continuous self-improvement is key to surviving on higher difficulty battlefields.
Collect Samples to Unlock Ship Modules
The three types of Samples—"Common," "Rare," and "Super"—found during missions are items you should prioritize securing. Bringing them back allows you to upgrade your ship's "Ship Modules." The effects of these modules, such as "shortening Eagle rearm time" or "expanding Orbital attack range," permanently enhance your Stratagems. Since they directly contribute to increasing your combat power, always be mindful of collecting Samples.
Acquire New Gear with Warbonds
Using Warbond Medals earned in missions, you can unlock new weapons, armor, emotes, and more from the "Warbonds." A wider selection of gear significantly broadens your tactical options. Be sure to check regularly for new Premium Warbonds as well, and strive to acquire your ideal loadout.
Furthermore, in the latest patch (6.3.0), the game environment is constantly changing, with examples such as the "Exosuit" Stratagem's health increasing from 1600 to 1800 and its cooldown being reduced from 10 minutes to 8 minutes. Discovering your own ultimate loadout by experimenting with various pieces of gear is also a major highlight of this game.
Summary
Helldivers 2 is by no means an easy game. However, by learning the basics, equipping yourself properly, and most importantly, cooperating with your comrades, you can undoubtedly achieve any difficult mission. Use this guide as a reference and start with lower difficulties. The sense of accomplishment when you laugh off friendly fire incidents and overcome desperate situations together will be an invaluable experience. Now, board your Hellpod! The galaxy awaits your heroic deeds!
