BG3 Wyll Guide: Approval, Romance and Mizora's Pact
Short answer: Wyll's approval climbs fastest if you do three things: defend the Emerald Grove, spare Karlach, and refuse to cosy up to his patron Mizora. His romance has to be started at the Act 1 tiefling party, and in Act 3 it ends if his father, Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, dies. The big fork in his personal quest, The Blade of Frontiers, is what he does about his pact with Mizora in Act 3.
This guide covers Patch 8 (15 April 2025, which Larian called its final major patch). Hotfixes have continued. I read the three most recent: 16 February 2026, Hotfix #36 on 26 March 2026, and 4.1.1.7631656 on 29 September 2026. None of them changes Wyll's dialogue, approval or personal quest. I did not read hotfixes #31 to #35. The numbers come from bg3.wiki pages I checked on 23 October 2026 (approval gains and losses are on two separate pages), not from my own testing in the game.
Wyll at a glance and how to recruit him
| Item | Details (bg3.wiki) |
|---|---|
| Class | Warlock (patron Mizora, subclass The Fiend). Drops to level 1 when recruited |
| Starting stats | STR 8 / DEX 13 / CON 14 / INT 13 / WIS 10 / CHA 17, 10 HP, AC 12 |
| Background | Folk Hero. The passive The Blade of Frontiers gives him rapier proficiency whatever his class |
| Personal quest | The Blade of Frontiers (all three acts). Related: Hunt the Devil, The Grand Duke |
| Romance | Open to any player character. He is monogamous and turns down open relationships |
- Where you meet him: in Act 1 he helps the Emerald Grove (Druid Grove) fight off the goblin attack. If he survives he trains tiefling children in the Hollow; talk to him and ask him to join. If he died in the fight, a Scroll of Revivify brings him back so you can still recruit him.
- If you recruit Karlach first: Wyll turns up at camp after your next long rest and confronts her. Defusing it gives approval with the companions nearby.
- When he leaves or turns on you: if you side with the goblins and raze the Grove, Wyll leaves for good (or attacks you if he is in the party). Attacking his father also turns him against you.
- When you cannot recruit him: if fighting breaks out among the Grove's inhabitants before you recruit him, he never joins, and he disappears if Karlach dies before he meets her. (The wiki adds an unconfirmed note that sealing the Grove may do the same.)
Approval: the big gains and losses
Wyll likes protecting the weak, kindness to children and defying devils, especially Mizora. He dislikes pointless violence, abandoning people in need and dealing with evil. Below are mainly the choices that move his approval by 5 or more in a single step, plus a few smaller ones that matter in context (there are many more +1 to +3 choices that are not worth listing).
| Act | Raises approval | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Offer to hunt the devil (Karlach) together when recruiting him | +5 |
| 1 | Defend the Grove successfully, then speak to Zevlor | +15 |
| 1 | Side with Karlach when Wyll confronts her, and recruit her | +20 |
| 1 | Persuade Kagha to free Arabella, or promise Zevlor to deal with the goblin leaders | +5 |
| 1 | Agree to rescue Duke Ravengard when Florrick asks | +10 |
| 1 (camp) | At camp, side with Karlach (or offer to help Wyll cut her down) during their confrontation | +10 |
| 1 (quest talks) | Ask how he became the Blade of Frontiers, ask about Mizora, encourage him to escape the pact | +5 each |
| 2 | Warn Isobel about Marcus | +10 |
| 2 | Tell Mizora you will help only if she amends Wyll's pact, then persuade her | +5, +10 |
| 2 | Free Mizora from the pod in exchange for amending his pact | +10 |
| 3 | Persuade Florrick out of prison, then tell her she has been a vital ally | +7, +10 |
| 3 | Wake Ansur's spirit | +10 |
| 3 | Escape the Iron Throne with Ravengard alive | +10 |
| 3 | After Ansur, hail Wyll as the Blade of Frontiers, the Blade of Avernus or Grand Duke | +15 |
| Act | Lowers approval | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open the Grove gate for the goblins, or tell Zevlor the horde is yours | -10 |
| 1 | Tell Florrick to find someone else to rescue the Duke | -5 |
| 2 | Say you are taking Isobel to Moonrise Towers | -10 |
| 3 | Refuse to help Florrick escape | -10 |
| 3 | Say the Duke can die for all you care | -3 |
| 3 | Sleep with Mizora (saying it was glorious the next morning costs another -5) | -5 |
There are also many small +3 to +5 gains in camp conversations. Talk to Wyll every time the exclamation mark appears over his head and his approval builds steadily.
Romance: how to start it, and what ends it
This follows the bg3.wiki Wyll/Romance page.
| Stage | Conditions and what happens |
|---|---|
| Act 1: the party (start) | At the tiefling celebration, find Wyll by the water. You can ask for a kiss outright, play a guessing game, or ask for a dance. The kiss is a Charisma (Persuasion) check, DC 15, but failing does not lock the romance. He turns you down if you have under 10 approval, have already agreed to spend the night with another companion, or are double-dating. |
| Act 2: the dance (partnered) | You need to be dating him, have 20 or more approval, and have visited the Last Light Inn or Moonrise Towers. During a long rest you find him practising a dance. Whether you pass the DC 10 dance check or not, you end up at a kiss, and you become partners. The wiki says the older platonic version of this scene no longer triggers in an unmodded game. |
| Act 3: the proposal | Once his father's fate is settled, talk to him after a long rest. By the Chionthar he offers an acorn from the Wilden Oak. Accepting leads to the love scene; avoiding it takes a DC 20 Persuasion check. |
- The Duke's death ends it: if Duke Ravengard dies for any reason, at Gortash's coronation or in the Iron Throne, Wyll breaks up with you at camp after asking for one last dance.
- No sharing: if another companion is also in a romance stage when Wyll's Act 2 scene fires, you are asked to choose. Halsin can offer to share you with Wyll in Act 3, but Wyll declines, so choosing Halsin ends things with Wyll.
- Mizora: if you go through with her advance, Wyll finds out the next morning and ends the relationship whatever you say. Backing out partway earns +10.
- The love test in Rivington: two or more correct answers out of three gets a warm reaction from Wyll (the wiki marks the right answers on its Romance page).
The Blade of Frontiers: where the quest forks
Act 1: Karlach, killed or spared
Wyll starts the game hunting a devil who fled Avernus, which is Karlach. When he meets her he wants to kill her, until a vision shared through the tadpoles shows she was a victim of the Blood War. You then choose to help him kill her or to spare her.
| Choice | What Mizora does |
|---|---|
| Karlach is killed | Mizora rewards Wyll with the Infernal Robe |
| Karlach is spared | Mizora punishes Wyll for breaking the pact and turns him into a horned fiend, which affects his Act 3 ending |
Act 2: "Zariel's asset"
Mizora orders Wyll to rescue a valuable asset of the archdevil Zariel taken by the Absolute. The asset is Mizora herself, in a pod in the Tadpoling Centre of the Mind Flayer Colony. You can bargain: a DC 16 check (Intimidation, History or Performance) persuades her to free Wyll from his pact, though it only takes effect after six months. Bring Wyll with you; after freeing her, a DC 14 Persuasion check gets a reward, the Infernal Rapier, a +2 rapier that uses spellcasting modifier for attack and damage.
Warning: if you annihilate Mizora in the pod, Wyll dies with her, because the pact turns his soul into a lemure in Avernus. He cannot be recovered as a companion.
Act 3: keep the pact or break it
After Gortash's coronation, Mizora comes to camp with a deal for Wyll.
| The Duke is | Wyll's options |
|---|---|
| Alive | Break the pact now (without her help, leaving him to his fate), or bind himself to her for good so she frees the Duke |
| Already dead | Renew the pact for good so she brings him back, or break the pact now |
Either choice earns Wyll +10 approval, according to the wiki. Breaking the pact does not automatically kill the Duke. The wiki's Iron Throne notes say Mizora appears to have him killed, but he can still be saved if you act in time. If you do not talk to Mizora at camp before going to the Iron Throne, you find the Duke dead. If Gortash dies before you reach the Iron Throne, the prison is destroyed and the Duke dies, although a Wyll who kept his pact has him revived by Mizora.
The three endings
| Ending | Condition (bg3.wiki) |
|---|---|
| Blade of Avernus | Wyll was turned into a fiend by Mizora and declines to become Grand Duke. He hunts devils in the Hells |
| Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate | The Duke is alive and, once told about Ansur, offers Wyll the succession, and Wyll accepts |
| Blade of Frontiers | He never completed his quest, or was not transformed and declines the dukedom |
If you broke the pact, Wyll may announce that he will hunt Mizora down. If a hidden check lets you notice he is hiding something, you can press him, and a DC 15 Persuasion check talks him out of it.
Summary: keeping Wyll to the end
- Defend the Grove. Siding with the goblins makes Wyll leave for good.
- Spare and recruit Karlach (+20), accepting that Wyll becomes a fiend.
- Never annihilate Mizora in the pod; Wyll dies with her.
- Start the romance at the Act 1 party, with at least 10 approval.
- Fighting Gortash at the coronation shuts the Iron Throne and the Duke dies, which ends the romance. The Gortash guide in the related articles covers that fork in detail.
