Illusions: Changing Gear Appearance with the Illusionist

Illusions change only the appearance of your gear to that of another item, handled by the Illusionist added to every hub when Ashes of Malmouth (AoM) is installed. Stats are never affected. The cost is iron per slot, scaling only with character level - never with how many times you have changed. The selectable looks are 'any item your account has ever obtained', including things you picked up and dropped or bought and refunded moments later. Head, shoulders, and medal can also be hidden outright. To undo, reselect the original appearance or use an Illusion-Be-Gone.

DO THIS FIRST
  • Want a new look? Visit the Illusionist in any hub and pay iron per slot to pick an appearance (stats never change).
  • Hate your helmet? Head, shoulders, and medal can be hidden outright from the Illusionist's menu.
  • The look you want is not listed? Your account has never obtained that item - picking it up for a moment (or buying and refunding it) adds it to the pool.
  • Want the original back? Reselect the true appearance at the Illusionist, or use an Illusion-Be-Gone.
01 / ILLUSIONIST-BASICS

Illusionist basics

One of AoM's flagship quality-of-life features: performance and looks, fully decoupled.

  • The Illusionist is an NPC added only when Ashes of Malmouth is installed, stationed in every hub.
  • The service re-skins equipment (illusions) - stats, skills, and set bonuses are entirely unaffected.
  • Changes are per slot, with an iron fee charged for each slot changed.
  • It answers the classic ARPG problem of the strongest gear rarely being the best-looking - and shines once your endgame kit settles.
  • The base game alone has no access; for whether AoM is worth buying, see the DLC guide article.
02 / COST

How the fees work

  • Fees are iron per slot, scaling only with your character's level.
  • The number of past changes never raises the price - re-dressing freely carries no penalty.
  • Costs are cheap at low level and rise per slot as the character levels.
  • By endgame standards the expense is minor, though re-skinning a full outfit repeatedly during leveling does add up.
03 / UNLOCK-POOL

The appearance pool: your acquisition history is everything

The pool is 'anything your account has ever obtained' - knowing this rule is what widens your wardrobe.

  • Selectable appearances come from items your account has obtained at least once.
  • Items picked up and dropped, or bought and refunded moments later, still register in the history and join the pool.
  • So if a vendor item's look catches your eye, buying and immediately refunding it unlocks the appearance for free in practice.
  • Uniques you will never wear still become wardrobe assets if they passed through your hands before selling - no need to hoard gear just for its looks.
04 / PRACTICAL

In practice: hiding and undoing

  • 1. Head, shoulder, and medal slots can be hidden entirely, not just re-skinned - the standard fix when a helmet hides your face.
  • 2. Undoing an illusion works two ways: reselect the item's true appearance at the Illusionist, or use the dedicated Illusion-Be-Gone item.
  • 3. Whenever an item's look catches your eye, grab it once (or buy and refund it) so it enters your history.
  • 4. Illusions are purely cosmetic - keep them entirely separate from performance decisions like gear upgrades and build tuning.
