Chaos Word of Pain & Flames of Ignaffar Deceiver
Word of Pain is normally taken only for the Chaos resistance reduction on its final node, Death Sentence, with its damage largely overlooked — this build instead makes it the primary damage source, backed up by Flames of Ignaffar (converted from Fire to Chaos via its Tainted Flame transmuter node). The forum author calls it an "unconventional" Deceiver. Built without any random Mythical Legendary drops, relying only on Cult of Solael faction gear (Vampirris) and crafted items, making it beginner-friendly.
Word of Pain
The author (Cripptid) personally cleared SR 26-31 on v1.2.1.6 and defeated the celestials Lokarr (~25 sec), Mogdrogen (~5 min), and Callagadra (~6 min 30 sec) on video. Skeleton key dungeon bosses (Steps of Torment, Port Valbury, Bastion of Chaos, Ancient Grove) and the Morgoneth dungeon boss were also cleared on video (Alkamos ~15 sec, Overlord Van Aldritch ~35 sec, Shar'Zul ~18 sec, Gargabol ~20 sec, Morgoneth ~27 sec) — all without Mythical Legendaries, using only faction gear and monster infrequents.

Skills & Priorities
6An Inquisitor active attack/debuff skill. It's normally taken only for the Chaos resistance reduction on its final node, Death Sentence, with the damage side largely overlooked — this build instead makes it the primary damage source. Its range is huge, hitting nearly half the screen in one cast. Its Impaired Aim debuff sharply lowers ranged enemies' hit chance (strong enough to make Messenger's meteors miss entirely). Converting its damage to Chaos requires either the crafted Conduit of Runic Whispers amulet or the Mythical Visage of the Black Flame helm — until then it stays Fire. Bind the Alladrah's Phoenix devotion's Phoenix Fire proc here (100% on crit).
An Inquisitor active attack skill. Its Tainted Flame transmuter node converts 100% of its Fire damage to Chaos and adds a 15% overall damage bonus. It strikes 3 times per second (up to 6 with strong casting speed), which pairs well with casting-speed gear. Its Fumble debuff makes melee enemies miss 50% of their attacks — a strong extra effect. During the 1-94 leveling window, before Word of Pain's Chaos conversion is online, this is the main damage skill. Bind the Solael's Witchblade devotion's Eldritch Fire proc here (15% on attack).
An Occultist AoE debuff skill that reduces Physical, Bleeding, Poison/Acid, Vitality, and Elemental (Fire/Cold/Lightning) resistances — not Chaos resistance; Chaos RR comes solely from Word of Pain's Death Sentence node. It also slows enemies, and cutting this separate resistance band raises overall damage taken. It procs devotions on a once-per-second "pulse" rather than per hit. Bind the Magi devotion's Fissure proc here (on attack).
An Occultist duration buff (recast before it expires to keep it up — not an always-on toggle) and the main source of this build's roughly 22% Physical Resistance and health regeneration. Its ~1100/sec passive HP regen acts as a safety net for situations where Life Leech becomes unreliable (under a Damage Reduction debuff, while Fumbled/Frozen/Slowed/Stunned, or against Life-Leech-resistant enemies like Chthonians or Aether Vanguard behemoths). Bind the Behemoth devotion's Giant's Blood proc here (15% chance on being hit, boosting recovery/regeneration).
An Occultist buff skill that grants 18% Damage Absorption — a major contributor to this build's survivability. Bind the Chariot of the Dead devotion's Wayward Soul proc here (20% chance on being hit).
An Inquisitor placed buff skill that grants 230 flat Damage Absorption, helping against DoTs and multiple simultaneous damage sources. It also grants Elemental Resistance and HP regen, giving it real defensive value beyond its offensive support.
Devotion Route (In Order)
20- 1.1 point in Crossroads (Chaos).
- 2.Complete Jackal (3pt / requires Chaos 1, already met by the running total; grants Chaos +3). A temporary investment refunded later.
- 3.1 point in Crossroads (Primordial).
- 4.Complete Sailor's Guide (4pt / requires Primordial 1, already met by the running total; grants Primordial +5). Also a temporary investment refunded later.
- 5.1 point in Crossroads (Eldritch).
- 6.Complete Quill (4pt / requires Eldritch 1, already met by the running total; grants Ascendant +3, Eldritch +3). Also a temporary investment refunded later.
- 7.Complete Behemoth (6pt / requires Chaos 3, Eldritch 4, Primordial 4, already met by the running total; grants Chaos +2, Eldritch +3). Bind its Giant's Blood proc to Blood of Dreeg.
- 8.[Core] Complete Solael's Witchblade (5pt / requires Chaos 4, Eldritch 6, already met by the running total; grants Chaos +1, Eldritch +1). Bind its Eldritch Fire proc to Flames of Ignaffar.
- 9.Refund Jackal (3pt returned). Chaos stays at 4 from Solael's Witchblade's and Behemoth's own grants alone, so nothing else is affected.
- 10.1 point in Crossroads (Order).
- 11.Complete Lotus (4pt / requires Order 1, already met by the running total; grants Eldritch +3, Order +2).
- 12.Complete Harvestman's Scythe (6pt / requires Ascendant 3, Order 3, Primordial 5, already met by the running total; grants Ascendant +3, Primordial +3).
- 13.Complete Magi (7pt / requires Eldritch 10, already met by the running total; grants Eldritch +3). Bind its Fissure proc to Curse of Frailty.
- 14.Refund Quill (4pt returned).
- 15.Refund the Eldritch Crossroads point (1pt returned). Eldritch stays at 10 from Solael's Witchblade's, Behemoth's, Lotus's, and Magi's own grants alone, so nothing is affected.
- 16.Complete Staff of Rattosh (6pt / requires Chaos 3, Order 3, Primordial 6, already met by the running total; grants Chaos +2, Primordial +3).
- 17.Refund Sailor's Guide (4pt returned).
- 18.Refund the Primordial Crossroads point (1pt returned). Primordial stays at 6 from Harvestman's Scythe's and Staff of Rattosh's own grants alone, so nothing is affected.
- 19.[Core] Complete Alladrah's Phoenix (5pt / requires Eldritch 6, Order 3, Primordial 6, already met by the running total; grants Ascendant +2, Eldritch +2). Bind its Phoenix Fire proc to Word of Pain.
- 20.[Core] Complete Chariot of the Dead (7pt / requires Ascendant 5, Eldritch 5, already met by the running total; grants Chaos +2, Eldritch +3). Bind its Wayward Soul proc to Possession. This lands at 48 of the 55-point budget, including 2 Crossroads points (Chaos, Order). This build has only 3 attack-eligible skills — Word of Pain, Flames of Ignaffar, and Curse of Frailty — and each already holds one devotion proc (a skill can only carry one celestial power at a time). Ulzuin's Torch (requires Chaos 8, Eldritch 15 — reachable at this point) is skipped since there's no remaining skill to bind its Meteor Shower proc to; the remaining 7 points are left as flexible/optional investment.
Gear
- ▸From level 1 to 94, Word of Pain hasn't gained its Chaos conversion yet, so run Flames of Ignaffar as the main damage source. Use the low-level version of the Blade Dance relic (sold by the Devil's Crossing faction) to unlock dual-wielding.
- ▸Dual-wield two Segarius' Tainted Blade (dropped by Brother Segarius, Vengeance of Kymon), then switch to two Vampirris once you hit level 94.
- ▸Equip the Incendiary Casque helm to boost Flames of Ignaffar. Over-leveling a skill past its nominal max is strongly encouraged — a level 26 Flames of Ignaffar deals 2-3x the damage of a level 16 one (same for Word of Pain).
- ▸Chase Bloodsworn Vestments (Blood Grove above Homestead, or Tomb of Korvaak) to further boost Flames of Ignaffar's level, and Loghorrean's Corruption, dropped by the main-game boss Loghorrean's Trove (Edge of Madness).
- ▸Chase Dreeg-Sect Legguards (from the Guardian of Dreeg, Secret Path questline) for HP regen, and Wendigo Eye from Wendigos near Barrowholm (or from Handarroth/Ollivioth/Yuvolloth summoned during the Ravager questline). Buy 2x Living Ring (boosts Word of Pain's nodes) and the Ugdenbog Waistguard belt from the Vinelton vendor in Feral Thicket.
- ▸Push the Cult of Solael faction reputation to Revered (naturally reachable by clearing all difficulties) to unlock buying 2x Vampirris — the build's main Word of Pain damage upgrade.
- ▸Craft the Conduit of Runic Whispers amulet from a blueprint bought from the Morgoneth dungeon vendor Yurri. His stock is randomized — leave the area and wait ~10 seconds before returning to refresh it. There are 11 possible skill-bonus variants; you specifically need the Chaos Word of Pain one. Crafting cost is low, so it's worth chasing.
- ▸Until you equip either the Conduit or the Mythical Visage of the Black Flame helm, Word of Pain stays Fire damage and won't convert to Chaos.
- ▸As optional upgrades, the guide suggests swapping in Mythical Legendaries (Voidsoul set helm/chest/shoulders only, Black Scorch Covenant helm+shoulders, Mythical Vestments of Severed Faith, Mythical Voidsteel Gauntlets, Mythical Demonbone Legplates, Mythical Timewarped Walkers, Mythical Combustion Band with either Mythical Entropic Coil or Voidheart). The author completed the demonstrated clears without them, so they aren't required.
Playstyle & Notes
- ▸Mark targets with Word of Pain and lean on its long duration for hit-and-run tactics — mark, retreat, repeat.
- ▸Layer Flames of Ignaffar's damage and Fumble (-50% melee hit chance) with Word of Pain's Impaired Aim (lower ranged hit chance) to sharply cut incoming damage.
- ▸Stack Death Sentence and Curse of Frailty's Chaos resistance reduction to boost overall damage.
- ▸Survivability leans on Possession's 18% Damage Absorption, Inquisitor Seal's flat 230 Damage Absorption, and Blood of Dreeg's HP regen, without heavy investment in dedicated defensive skills.
Blood of Dreeg supplies roughly 22% Physical Resistance and health regen, but every other resistance has to be filled deliberately through gear. Life Leech (~23%) is the main sustain tool, and Blood of Dreeg's and Inquisitor Seal's flat HP regen and damage absorption act as a safety net against Damage Reduction debuffs or Life-Leech-resistant enemies (Chthonians, Aether Vanguard behemoths, etc.).
Single-target damage is weak and leveling is relatively slow. Offensive Ability runs low, leaving hit chance a concern. Word of Pain stays Fire damage and doesn't hit its stride until level 94 and the Conduit of Runic Whispers are both in place. Crafting the right Conduit variant also involves some RNG.
Farm Cult of Solael faction reputation for 2x Vampirris, buy and craft the Conduit of Runic Whispers blueprint from Yurri in the Morgoneth dungeon, chase Bloodsworn Vestments from Blood Grove above Homestead or Tomb of Korvaak, Loghorrean's Corruption from Loghorrean's Trove (Edge of Madness), Dreeg-Sect Legguards from the Guardian of Dreeg (Secret Path questline), Wendigo Eye from Wendigos near Barrowholm, and 2x Living Ring plus the Ugdenbog Waistguard from the Vinelton vendor in Feral Thicket.
