Aether Drain Essence Apostate

A Necromancer+Inquisitor caster built around Drain Essence's channeled life-drain damage, standing on Inquisitor Seal while stacking resistance reduction and healing to hold the line. The author (Ulvar1) presents it as a full self-found (SSF) build journal, emphasizing that casting speed and energy management (including cost reduction) are the keys to making it work.

TARGET CONTENT

The author posted video proof of defeating Ilgorr (Steps of Torment, phase 2) and Alkamos (that dungeon's final boss) in a Steps of Torment showcase video (vimeo.com/482747123) on v1.1.8.1. Defeating the Hidden Path's secret boss is also reported. SR 35 (Ultimate) is reported as "pretty easy" with a supporting screenshot, but no dedicated video demonstrates that clear. Loghorrean (late Ultimate) is only described as something the character was "on the way to" defeat at the time of writing — its defeat itself isn't demonstrated. Level 100 Drain Essence DPS was reported around 70k (without Mana Infusion). No author re-verification on the current v1.2.1.6 patch could be confirmed.

SKILLS

Skills & Priorities

8
1. Drain EssencePoints: 最大(+10オーバーキャップ)Priority: Top priority

A Necromancer active channeled beam that can hit multiple enemies in its area while leeching life — the build's main damage source. The guide says it's worth investing points past its nominal cap ("overcap"). Bind the Widow devotion's Arcane Bomb proc here (25% chance on attack).

2. Word of PainPoints: 少数(+Death Sentenceを重視)Priority: Medium

An Inquisitor active attack/debuff skill, invested mainly for its final Death Sentence node, which cuts enemy Aether resistance to boost Drain Essence's damage. Bind the Rattosh, the Veilwarden devotion's Will of Rattosh proc here (15% chance on attack).

3. Inquisitor SealPoints: 最大(+モディファイア1pt)Priority: High

An Inquisitor placed buff skill that grants flat damage absorption and resistances — the defensive anchor. The guide's core loop is standing on this while channeling Drain Essence.

4. Word of RenewalPoints: Priority: Medium

An Inquisitor healing skill that supplements Drain Essence's life-steal for sustained fighting.

5. Storm Box of ElgolothPoints: Priority: Medium

An Inquisitor deployable debuff that shocks the target and nearby enemies with ongoing Lightning damage and a resistance-reduction effect.

6. Spectral BindingPoints: 最大Priority: High

A Necromancer passive that boosts flat health, Offensive Ability, and flat damage — the foundation of both this build's survivability and damage.

7. Spectral WrathPoints: 最大Priority: Medium

A Necromancer passive that boosts damage while shredding enemy resistance.

8. Ill OmenPoints: Priority: Medium

A Necromancer AoE debuff that reduces enemies' damage output, not their Defensive Ability.

DEVOTION

Devotion Route (In Order)

13
  1. 1.The cited guide's text lays out a route ("Blue Crossroad -> Imp -> Bat -> Yellow Crossroad -> Tortoise -> Crane -> Scales of Ulcama -> Widow -> Solemn Watcher -> refund Yellow & Blue Crossroads -> Lotus -> refund Crane -> Viper -> Jackal -> Green Crossroad -> Rattosh, the Veilwarden -> Red Crossroad -> 4 nodes in Dying God") whose final "4 nodes in Dying God" is a partial investment (4 of 6 stars, locking in specific stars without completing the whole shape). Which exact stars those 4 points land on isn't confirmable from primary sources alone, and the pre/post-refund affinity requirements couldn't be rigorously verified either. So this build keeps the guide's core named constellations (Widow, Rattosh) and uses an independently designed, fully-verified 46/55-point route with zero refunds and zero partial investments, bridging with Bat, Imp, Jackal, Tortoise, Scholar's Light, Lotus, and Crane instead. 1 point in Crossroads (Eldritch).
  2. 2.Complete Bat (5pt / requires Eldritch 1, already met by the running total; grants Chaos +2, Eldritch +3).
  3. 3.1 point in Crossroads (Primordial).
  4. 4.Complete Imp (5pt / requires Primordial 1, already met by the running total; grants Eldritch +3, Primordial +3).
  5. 5.[Core] Complete Widow (6pt / requires Eldritch 6, Primordial 4, met by the running total of Eldritch 7, Primordial 4; grants Primordial +3). Bind its Arcane Bomb proc to Drain Essence.
  6. 6.1 point in Crossroads (Chaos).
  7. 7.Complete Jackal (3pt / requires Chaos 1, already met by the running total; grants Chaos +3).
  8. 8.1 point in Crossroads (Order).
  9. 9.Complete Tortoise (5pt / requires Order 1, already met by the running total; grants Order +2, Primordial +3).
  10. 10.Complete Scholar's Light (3pt / requires Eldritch 1, already met by the running total; grants Eldritch +4).
  11. 11.Complete Lotus (4pt / requires Order 1, already met by the running total; grants Eldritch +3, Order +2).
  12. 12.Complete Crane (5pt / requires Order 1, already met by the running total; grants Order +5).
  13. 13.[Core] Complete Rattosh, the Veilwarden (6pt / requires Chaos 6, Eldritch 10, Order 6, met by the running total of Chaos 6, Eldritch 14, Order 10; grants no affinity, but bind its Will of Rattosh proc to Word of Pain). This lands at 46 of the 55-point budget, including 4 Crossroads points (Eldritch, Primordial, Chaos, Order), with zero refunds needed anywhere. The last 9 points are left as flexible/optional investment.
GEAR

Gear

LEVELING
  • Early on, chase green items with the "Essence Drinker" prefix (+2 Drain Essence) and "of Insight" suffix (energy regen proc). Choosing "no" on the "The Lost Elder" quest yields the Bone Talisman relic early.
  • Mid-game, upgrade to Galakros Dread Plating (a chest piece converting Vitality to Aether) and the Ascendant Source weapon, purchasable from the Hyram vendor in Steelcap District. Buy the Death-Watcher Pendant amulet from a Blood Grove vendor.
  • Consider Lunal'Valgoth's Waistguard (+1 to Necromancer, low drop rate) as a belt option.
ENDGAME
  • Center the weapon on the Hex Launcher (crafted from a Coven faction recipe, converting Vitality to Aether). Use the Spectral War Shield (a monster infrequent, purchasable/farmable in Steps of Torment).
  • Chase Ilgorr's Eternal Vigil (medal, 50% drop from the boss Ilgorr), the Aetherbolt Pendant (amulet, Coven faction blueprint), and the Fettan Mask (helm, from a Korvan Sands urn — the level 75 version is fine).
  • Chase the Mortality relic (Malmouth faction blueprint) and Solael's pants (legs, 40% drop from the Hidden Path secret quest boss). Prioritize resistance augments, then DA/OA/Aether damage%.
PLAY

Playstyle & Notes

PLAYSTYLE
  • Stand on Inquisitor Seal and keep channeling Drain Essence — a channel-centric playstyle.
  • Soften enemies with Word of Pain's Aether resistance reduction before committing to the fight.
  • Casting speed and energy management (including cost reduction) are the lifeline. The Widow, Bat, and Rattosh (the Veilwarden) devotions support life-steal and resistance reduction.
RESISTANCES

Aim to overcap most resistances by roughly 30%. Pierce and Bleed are less critical than the rest. The guide stresses that "Stun, Freeze, and Slow resistances are very important" to this build's survival and deserve priority investment.

WEAKNESSES

Early on, damage is heavily single-target with almost no energy regen, which the author calls "very slow." The guide directly compares it unfavorably to Albrecht's Aether Ray builds on raw damage. There's a progression wall around level 85 that requires patience until the Hex Launcher and Aetherbolt Pendant come online. Low-drop-rate items like Ilgorr's Eternal Vigil and Solael's pants take time to farm.

FARMING SPOTS

Farm Steps of Torment (requires skeleton keys; Ilgorr, the Spectral War Shield vendor, and final boss Alkamos), Blood Grove (Death-Watcher Pendant vendor), Hidden Path (secret boss), and the Malmouth regions (Ascendant Source).
