Dance of Knives Rogue Leveling Build
A Lord of Hatred level 1–70 route that builds three Combo Points with Blade Shift, then keeps Dance of Knives channeling while moving through packs. Add Runes, a Talisman, and Mercenaries before transitioning into its endgame version at 70.
Why This Is the Beginner Baseline
2Strengths
- Attacking while moving makes normal-pack clearing fast and fluid.
- No Unique is mandatory; weapon DPS and Dance of Knives ranks carry the route to level 70.
- Dark Shroud, Concealment, and Shadow Clone divide defense, restarts, and tougher fights cleanly.
Limitations
- Stopping the channel loses the prebuilt Combo Point setup, so the rotation must be restarted.
- Tight spaces, movement disruption, and poor Energy sustain can break momentum.
Final Six-Skill Setup
6Target Rank is the base-skill goal at level 70; spend remaining points on the chosen branch modifiers as they unlock.
Blade Shift
Basic skill used to build three Combo Points before starting Dance of Knives.
Dance of Knives
Main channeled attack, maintained while circling around packs.
Dark Shroud
Persistent defense for close-range hits; refresh it as shadows are lost.
Shadow Imbuement
Adds chain explosions to speed up normal-pack clearing with Dance of Knives.
Concealment
Escape tool and safe setup for restarting the channel.
Shadow Clone
Ultimate for Elites and bosses; avoid spending the long cooldown on ordinary packs.
Specialization: Combo Points
3Setup checklist
- At level 15, complete the True Potential priority quest to unlock Specializations.
- Land Blade Shift three times for three Combo Points before beginning Dance of Knives.
- The opening setup persists during the channel; after interruption, rebuild from three Blade Shift hits.
Expansion Setup for an Unbroken Dance
3Talisman
- While leveling, use a Seal with more slots and useful individual Charms instead of waiting for a set.
- Prioritize Cutthroat, Core, or Dance of Knives ranks, multiplicative damage, Attack Speed, and Critical Strike Chance.
- For comfort add Cooldown Reduction and Movement Speed; for defense add Maximum Life, Resistances, and Armor.
Runewords
- Neo + Gar converts time spent moving without taking damage into Critical Strike support.
- Cir + Qua adds Movement Speed after five skill casts to connect packs more smoothly.
- Socket leveling Runewords into armor and replace them only when stronger Runes become available.
Mercenary
- Hire Raheir with Ground Slam, Aegis, Bastion, and Inspiration for defense while moving.
- Use Varyana's Bloodthirst as Reinforcement, triggered by any skill while in combat.
- Subo is an exploration alternative, but defensive Raheir is the leveling baseline.
In the base game, keep the same six skills and Combo Points while omitting Runes, the Talisman, and Mercenaries. Compensate with more Energy recovery and Movement Speed on gear, and lower difficulty if pack clear slows. Consider a separate base-game setup after level 70.
Level-by-Level Priorities
4Move from Blade Shift into Dance of Knives
- Take one rank in Blade Shift, then prioritize Dance of Knives and its branch upgrades once available.
- Add Dark Shroud and practice circling the outside of ordinary packs to avoid hits.
Unlock Combo Points and a safe restart
- Complete True Potential, select Combo Points, and connect three Blade Shift hits into Dance of Knives.
- Add Concealment and Shadow Imbuement; after interruption, reposition with Concealment before restarting.
Complete the bar and stabilize tougher fights
- Add Shadow Clone and layer it just before Shadow Imbuement against Elites and bosses.
- Raise Dance of Knives while adding Energy sustain, Movement Speed, and Dark Shroud branch upgrades.
Add expansion systems and prepare the endgame transition
- Add Neo + Gar, Cir + Qua, Raheir, and Varyana as obtained to reduce channel interruptions.
- At level 70, begin Paragon and progressively move gear and the Talisman into the endgame Dance of Knives setup.
Simple Combat Loop
4- Set up Dark Shroud and land Blade Shift three times to build Combo Points.
- Activate Shadow Imbuement, add Shadow Clone for a tougher target, then begin Dance of Knives.
- Circle around the pack and maintain the channel while avoiding ground effects and frontal attacks.
- If interrupted, use Concealment to reach safety and restart from three Blade Shift hits.
Use Normal as the speed-leveling baseline. Raise to Hard only when normal packs never break momentum; lower it if channels repeatedly stop, Energy empties, or Elite fights drag on.
What to Keep While Leveling
3Affix priorities
- Upgrade dual-wield weapon DPS and item power first; the unused ranged weapon is an affix holder.
- For offense seek Dance of Knives, Cutthroat, or Core ranks, Dexterity, Attack Speed, and Critical Strike Chance.
- For comfort add Energy recovery and Movement Speed; fill Maximum Life, Resistances, and Armor as needed.
Helpful Aspects—not requirements
Low-level gear is replaced quickly, so reserve scarce materials for major weapon upgrades and important Aspects. Aspect names and effects remain on the weekly review list.
Safe Alternatives
3Adjust without breaking the build
- If Energy is unstable, add recovery before more offensive affixes and use tighter circles to reduce wasted movement.
- Where interruption is common, use Concealment before engaging and do not enter the next pack with depleted Dark Shroud.
- For a ranged playstyle, switch to Rapid Fire, but replace the skill tree, gear priorities, and rotation together.
