Whirlwind Barbarian Leveling Build
A beginner baseline for levels 1–70: build Fury with Lunging Strike, then clear packs with Whirlwind. It needs no mandatory Unique or expansion-only feature and progresses by equipping your strongest two-handed weapon.
Why This Is the Beginner Baseline
2Strengths
- Whirlwind deals damage while moving, making pack mechanics easier to avoid.
- No mandatory Unique; weapon damage and stable Fury are enough to reach level 70.
- The normal loop is clear—generate Fury, then spin—and mobility skills also shorten travel time.
Limitations
- Holding Whirlwind on an empty Fury globe stalls both damage and pace.
- Single-target bosses take longer than packs; transition to a dedicated endgame setup after level 70.
Final Six-Skill Setup
6Target Rank is the base-skill goal at level 70; spend remaining points on the chosen branch modifiers as they unlock.
Lunging Strike
Gap closer and Fury generator used before Whirlwind.
Whirlwind
Main channeled attack; keep moving around enemies while spinning.
Call of the Ancients
Burst cooldown for Elites and bosses.
Ground Stomp
Control slot that gathers and stops packs.
Rallying Cry
Sustain cooldown for Fury generation and movement.
Charge
Engage, reposition, and move between packs.
Arsenal and Weapon Assignment
3Setup checklist
- At level 15, complete the class quest in Ked Bardu to unlock the Weapon Technique slot. The build works before then, but do not postpone it.
- Assign Whirlwind to whichever two-handed bludgeoning or slashing weapon currently has higher weapon damage; damage matters more than type while leveling.
- Leave Lunging Strike on automatic selection. Use a Technique you have leveled with available weapons and expect to swap it during the trip to 70.
Level-by-Level Priorities
4Establish Fury generation and Whirlwind
- Take one rank in Lunging Strike, then prioritize Whirlwind ranks after it unlocks. Return to the Basic skill whenever Fury runs dry.
- After taking Rallying Cry, use it during Whirlwind in dense packs to support Fury and movement speed.
Add mobility and configure the Arsenal
- Add Charge to shorten engagements and travel. Keep one use available for entering or escaping dangerous packs.
- Complete the level-15 class quest and explicitly assign your strongest two-handed weapon to Whirlwind.
Complete the bar with control and burst
- Use Ground Stomp to group enemies and hold them inside Whirlwind. Save Call of the Ancients for Elites and bosses.
- Raise Whirlwind, Call of the Ancients, Rallying Cry, then Charge, taking branch upgrades when their utility unlocks.
Stabilize Fury and defenses
- Add one or two of Fury generation, Maximum Resource, or Fury cost reduction—whichever removes your empty-resource downtime.
- Fill Maximum Life, Armor, and Resistances in the order needed. At 70, transition to a Barbarian endgame build.
Simple Combat Loop
4- Enter with Charge or Lunging Strike, then use Lunging Strike to establish Fury.
- Activate Rallying Cry, channel Whirlwind, and circle around dangerous enemy effects.
- Group dense packs with Ground Stomp and continue channeling Whirlwind.
- Add Call of the Ancients for Elites and bosses. If Fury empties, stop channeling and rebuild with the Basic skill.
Hard is a reasonable starting point. Lower it if Fury repeatedly empties on normal packs, Elites take too long, or deaths interrupt progress. Raise difficulty only when packs no longer break your movement pace.
What to Keep While Leveling
3Affix priorities
- Prioritize weapon damage and item power on two-handers; strong affixes do not rescue a weapon with much lower base damage.
- For offense seek Whirlwind ranks, Strength, Critical Strike, and Physical damage; for comfort prioritize Fury generation and Movement Speed.
- On armor seek Maximum Life, Armor, and Resistances. Gear changes frequently while leveling, so no Unique is required.
Helpful Aspects—not requirements
Low-level weapons are replaced quickly, so do not spend scarce Aspects or materials on every upgrade. Aspect names and effects remain part of the weekly review.
Safe Alternatives
3Adjust without breaking the build
- For more defense, replace Charge with Challenging Shout. Travel slows down, but pack damage is easier to manage.
- If early Fury is unstable, adding more Basic attacks is safer than replacing Ground Stomp with War Cry just for damage.
- For a different playstyle, switch to Hammer of the Ancients or Double Swing leveling, but change both gear priorities and skill allocation together.
