Project Zomboid: Early Game Survival Checklist Before Utility Shutdown
Project Zomboid does not have a season system. The current stable version is "Build 41". "Build 42" is under development as the next major update. This article is based on information for Build 41.
Surviving the zombie pandemic in Kentucky in 'Project Zomboid'. The initial peace doesn't last long, as electricity and water suddenly stop. The loss of these essential utilities is a crisis that can lead to death even for veteran survivors. This guide thoroughly explains what to do in the limited time of the early game, in a prioritized checklist format, to prepare for that fateful day (0-30 days later in default settings). Neglect preparation, and only death awaits. Read this article to establish your foundation for survival in the apocalyptic world.
Top Priority! Action Checklist Before Utility Cutoff
Before electricity and water stop, aim to complete the following items. Missing even one can make later survival significantly more difficult.
- Secure Water: Gather all water-holding containers such as pots, kettles, buckets, bowls, and empty plastic bottles at your base and fill them with clean water.
- Secure a Generator: Explore houses and warehouses to secure at least one "generator" and the skill magazine "How to Use Generators".
- Stockpile Fuel: Obtain multiple "gas cans" and fill them at gas stations.
- Level Carpentry Skill: Watch TV educational programs and disassemble furniture to aim for Carpentry skill level 4.
- Manage Food: Prioritize consuming perishable foods and secure long-lasting canned goods and a "can opener".
- Gather Tools: Collect essential tools for base setup and vehicle maintenance, such as axes, saws, hammers, wrenches, and tire pumps.
- Secure a Vehicle: Obtain a vehicle in good condition, which will be vital for movement and transporting supplies.
[Water Strategy] Survival Strategy Against Thirst
Water is the most important element for human survival. Once the water supply stops, securing safe water becomes significantly more difficult. Establish a solid water infrastructure before the cutoff.
Short-Term Measures: Store Water in All Containers
This is the easiest and most immediate measure. Explore houses and restaurant kitchens, and bring all water-holding containers like pots, kettles, buckets, bowls, pitchers, and empty plastic bottles back to your base. While the water supply is still functional, fill all these containers with clean water. Even this alone will allow you to stave off thirst for some time after the water supply stops. A large amount of water is also needed to wash clothes soiled from combat with zombies, so there's no such thing as collecting too much.
Long-Term Measures: Aim to Install Rain Barrels
Installing "rain barrels" is essential for securing a permanent water source. Rain barrels can be crafted at Carpentry skill level 4. The materials are 3 "planks" and 4 "garbage bags". To aim for this level from the early game, the following actions are effective:
- Watch TV Programs: Watch the educational programs broadcast daily at 6:00, 12:00, and 18:00 on the "Life and Living" TV channel. Carpentry programs, in particular, provide huge skill experience bonuses.
- Disassemble Furniture: Your Carpentry skill also increases by using a "saw" and "hammer" to disassemble unnecessary beds, doors, tables, and other furniture.
Once rain barrels are installed, the water needs to be filtered to be safe for drinking. However, by installing rain barrels directly above a sink at your base (on the second-floor or rooftop) and plumbing them using a "wrench," you can gain unlimited access to filtered, clean water directly from indoor faucets. Establishing this setup is the ultimate solution to your water problems.
[Electricity Strategy] How to Maintain the Light of Civilization
When electricity stops, refrigerators cease to function, and gas station pumps also shut down. Securing a generator is an urgent task to maintain the benefits of modern civilization.
Securing a Generator and "How to Use Generators"
"Generators" are primarily found in house garages, suburban warehouses, and sheds. However, simply finding a generator isn't enough; you need to read the skill magazine "How to Use Generators" to learn how to operate it. This magazine can be found in house bookshelves, mailboxes, bookstores, and school libraries, so always keep an eye out for it during early exploration. Generators are very heavy, so transporting them after securing a vehicle is practical. Ideally, you should secure at least two units: one for your base and one for a gas station you visit.
Stockpiling Gasoline, Your Lifeline
Generators consume gasoline while operating. Moreover, vehicles, your means of transportation, are just lumps of iron without gasoline. While electricity is still available and gas stations are functional, you must secure as much gasoline as possible. Find multiple "gas cans" (preferably five or more), fill them up at gas stations, and stockpile them at your base. Gas cans can be found in gas station storage, car trunks, and garages. It's no exaggeration to say that the amount you stockpile will determine your range of activity after the utility cutoff.
Other Essential Preparations
Beyond water and electricity, various other preparations are necessary for a stable survival life.
Food Planning: The Battle Against Spoilage
A power outage means refrigerators stop working. This means perishable foods like meat, vegetables, and milk will all begin to spoil simultaneously. In preparation for the power outage, prioritize consuming these perishable foods. At the same time, gather a large quantity of long-lasting canned goods, dried foods (like pasta, rice), and cereals. Canned goods are excellent preserved foods, but a "can opener" is essential to open them. Don't forget to secure one. Can openers are easily found in house kitchens.
Securing Tools and Vehicles
In the apocalyptic world, appropriate tools are needed for every task. Prioritize collecting the following tools:
- Axe: Useful for felling trees and as a powerful melee weapon.
- Saw, Hammer: Essentials for carpentry.
- Wrench: Needed for rain barrel plumbing and vehicle maintenance.
- Tire Pump, Jack, Lug Wrench: Essential for changing vehicle tires.
Furthermore, a vehicle is indispensable for traversing the vast map and transporting large quantities of supplies. Find a car with an engine and tires in good condition. Unless your occupation is "Thief," to start a car without keys, you need to acquire Electrical level 1 and Mechanics level 2, then press the "V key" near the engine to "hotwire the engine."
Summary: Preparation Makes the Difference for Survival
In Project Zomboid, the cutoff of electricity and water signals an increase in the game's difficulty. However, it is an unavoidable event, and precisely because you don't know when it will happen, planned preparation from day one is crucial. Use the checklist introduced in this article to steadily progress with securing water, maintaining power, stockpiling food, and self-improvement. When the utilities are cut off, your base should be the last bastion maintaining civilization. With thorough preparation, overcome the inevitable "that day."
