FFT: Build a Versatile Knight Squad Beyond Arithmeticians

SHAREXFacebookLINE
The tale of nameless individuals unfolding behind the history of Ivalice. Final Fantasy Tactics (FFT) continues to captivate our hearts not only with its profound story but also with its perfection as an SRPG played on a grid-based field, and above all, its job system brimming with infinite possibilities. Many players have surely pondered, 'What is the strongest job in FFT?' and toiled through the nights to train their units. It's widely believed that 'Arithmetick's' overwhelming power is the ultimate answer to that question. Indeed, its might is akin to a divine miracle. However, we must ask: Is there any excitement in merely pressing a button and watching the battlefield turn into a wasteland? No, absolutely not. The true essence of FFT strategy lies in the sense of accomplishment gained by raising your own unique knight squad through trial and error and overcoming formidable foes. In this article, we want to fully discuss a training philosophy filled with passion and romance, one that forges each generic unit into the strongest soldier, without resorting to the easy path of 'Arithmetick'.

1. The Ironclad Job Path: Chosen for Versatility and Growth to Lead Your Squad from Early to Late Game!

Every story begins with a nameless 'Squire'. In FFT job training, the most crucial aspect is to develop a stable foundation for combat from the early stages, all while keeping the ultimate goal in mind. For this, there exists an 'ironclad' training route, or job path. First, for training physical units, 'Monk' is unavoidable. This job, accessible relatively early by progressing from Squire to Knight, boasts excellent HP and PA growth rates, significantly boosting a unit's base capabilities. Crucially, its action ability 'Chakra' provides self-healing, and 'Revive' offers recovery, granting the party sustained combat capability without relying on a Chemist. Equipping the support ability 'Brawler' allows for high damage output even without a weapon, making it exceptionally useful for overcoming early-game financial difficulties. On the other hand, the standard path for magic units is via 'Time Mage'. While boosting magic attack with Black Mage, learn the Time Mage's 'Haste'. The importance of Speed and turns in FFT is self-evident. In the late game, acquiring 'Short Charge' can even overcome the greatest weakness of magic users: cast time. Learning this ability alone makes it worthwhile for all magic units to pass through the Time Mage job. These are merely the basic templates. However, it is precisely because of this solid foundation that inheriting more specialized and powerful abilities, such as Samurai's 'Blade Grasp' or Dragoon's 'Jump', truly shines. First, master the basics. That is the first step towards building the strongest knight squad capable of handling any battle situation.

2. Why Thief's 'Steal' is Essential: A Training Method for Both Rare Equipment and JP Farming

If you think 'Thieves are useless in combat,' then you're missing out on half the fun of FFT. The Thief's ability 'Steal' plays an extremely important role in this game's strategy and character development. The biggest reason, of course, is the existence of 'rare equipment'. Numerous powerful weapons and armor can only be obtained here, equipped by specific bosses or enemy units. The 'Genji Set' stolen from Elmdore, the 'Chaos Blade' hidden in the Deep Dungeon. The joy of acquiring these and the significant power boost they provide are irreplaceable. Chasing after the strongest equipment, which can never be obtained just by progressing through the story, is one of the true pleasures of FFT. Furthermore, 'Steal' is also the best way to farm JP. Turn an enemy unit into a Frog, or incapacitate them with Don't Move, leaving only one alive. Then, surround that enemy and repeatedly 'Steal'. Even if the success rate is low, experience and JP accumulate with every action. Especially since 'Steal' can be attempted multiple times until successful, it's overwhelmingly more efficient for earning JP than other actions. Using this technique, you can complete the abilities of the job you want to master in a short amount of time. As a byproduct of passing through the Thief job, its high Speed growth rate shouldn't be overlooked. In FFT, units with high Speed dominate the battlefield. What might seem like a roundabout way of training with the Thief is, in fact, the shortest route to making your knight squad faster and stronger than anyone else's.

3. Surpassing Late-Game Secret Characters! The Art of Ability Inheritance to Transform Generic Units into Ultimate Soldiers

As the story progresses, powerful unique units like Orlandeau join your party. Faced with their overwhelming performance, many players might relegate the generic units they've shared hardships with to the reserves. But don't stop there. By mastering the art of ability inheritance, a mere soldier you named can ascend to a being that surpasses even the legendary Thunder God Cid. This is the ultimate pinnacle of FFT strategy: the 'Art of Ability Inheritance'. For instance, let's consider the ultimate physical attacker. Equip the Samurai's support ability 'Two Swords' and wield the strongest Knight Swords in both hands. While this alone provides tremendous firepower, it leaves defenses vulnerable. So, also equip the Samurai's reaction ability 'Blade Grasp'. This virtually nullifies physical attacks. Furthermore, set the Bard's 'Move+3' or Time Mage's 'Teleport' as a movement ability, and you'll create a god of destruction capable of diving into enemy lines with astonishing mobility and annihilating them in a single strike. Equipping Knight's 'Sword Skill' or Ninja's 'Throw' as action abilities would further expand its tactical prowess. The same applies to magic users. Based on the Time Mage's 'Short Charge', select only the necessary spells from all magic systems – Black Magic, White Magic, Summon Magic, Geomancy... and create your own ultimate mage. It's even possible to combine a Summoner's wide-area attacks with a Geomancer's status ailment attacks. The key is not to cling to a single job. It's about traversing various jobs and beautifully, functionally combining the 'parts' – the abilities – gained from them. This heavily reflects the player's individuality and strategy. While unique characters possess a complete strength, the potential of the generic units we train is limitless. Define your own 'strongest', not an imitation of someone else's, and carve your name into Ivalice's history with your own knight squad.
