Vault 88 Guide: Overview and How to Start
Vault 88 is a massive underground settlement that players can freely construct and operate, accessible by installing the "Vault-Tec Workshop" DLC. To start this content, your character's level must be 20 or higher. Upon reaching level 20, your Pip-Boy will automatically receive a radio signal, "Vault 88 Radio Beacon." Follow this signal to the "Quincy Quarry" in the southeastern part of The Commonwealth. A cave deep within the quarry serves as the entrance to Vault 88.
Upon entering, you will be attacked by Feral Ghouls. After eliminating the enemies and proceeding, you will meet Overseer Valerie Barstow, who, despite being a Ghoul, retains her sanity. She will ask for your help in building the Vault and conducting experiments with the prototype devices left behind by Vault-Tec. From here, your grand questline to create your own Vault begins.
Liberate the Vast Underground Space! All Area Unlock Procedures
Vault 88 is an extremely vast space, divided into multiple sectors such as North, Northeast, and East, not just the main area near the entrance. Initially, paths are blocked by rubble, but by progressing through the quest "Explore Vault 88," you can unlock all areas as buildable settlements. The steps to fully liberate all areas are as follows:
- Activate workshop mode and dismantle rubble, such as limestone walls blocking paths, to clear a route. Dismantling yields large quantities of "steel" and "concrete," essential for construction.
- Clear out enemies (Feral Ghouls, Mirelurks, Deathclaws, etc.) in each sector. Powerful creatures like the Mirelurk Queen may appear in deeper areas, so be thoroughly prepared.
- At the deepest part of the sector, discover a broken "Vault-Tec workshop."
- Retrieve the "Vault 88 Control Board" from the workshop and either return to the main area's workshop to repair it, or repair and activate it on the spot.
- Activating the workshop formally unlocks that sector as a buildable area.
This process to each sector repeats until the entirety of Vault 88 is revealed. You will be able to use the expansive land freely, so patiently proceed with exploration and dismantling.
Exploration and Resource Farming Tips
The true value of Vault 88 lies in its abundant resources. When securing exploration routes, keeping the following points in mind will be efficient:
- Thorough Dismantling: By dismantling rubble, old vehicles, and broken machinery within the Vault, you can secure large quantities of valuable materials such as steel, concrete, copper, and nuclear material. There is little need to transport materials from outside.
- Preparation for Tough Mutants: Liberating each sector involves combat. We recommend having plenty of weapons suitable for close-quarters combat, such as shotguns and explosives, as well as enough "RadAway" and "Rad-X" for radiation protection.
- Searching for Hidden Resources: During exploration, valuable items, Junk, and Stimpaks can sometimes be found in forgotten containers and lockers. Explore every nook and cranny carefully.
Become the Overseer's Right Hand! The Four Prototype Experiments
Central to Overseer Barstow's questline are the experiments using four types of prototype devices. For each experiment, players choose parameters that determine the effects on the resident test subjects. These choices have a "humanitarian" or "inhumane" duality, influencing not only the performance of the completed device but also the Overseer's evaluation.
Power Cycle 1000
This device generates electricity as residents cycle. During experiments, you select additional effects. Humanitarian options (e.g., adding mood-enhancing additives) increase resident happiness, while inhumane options (e.g., maximizing power output) generate more electricity at the cost of happiness.
Soda Fountain
This device provides drinks to residents. Parameters determine the additives mixed into the drinks. Choices include appetite-suppressing effects (counted as food), happiness-boosting effects, or caffeine addition to increase work efficiency (with side effects). These choices challenge your Vault's management policy.
Phoropter
This is an optometry machine used to test residents' eyesight. Here, you are faced with choices such as scanning information to identify residents' potential problems (inhumane) or simply broadcasting subliminal messages to increase happiness (humanitarian). The former is appreciated by the Overseer but infringes on residents' privacy.
Slot Machine
This is a gambling device providing entertainment. Parameter settings allow you to choose whether to make it a safe device that purely boosts resident happiness, or a "rigged" device that allows players to earn Bottle Caps to increase Vault revenue, but at the expense of exploiting residents.
Upon completing all experiments, Overseer Barstow will decide whether to remain in the Vault or depart. Her decision is heavily influenced by the choices you made during the experiments.
Rewards and Unlocked Special Facilities
Vault 88's questline completion will unlock numerous rewards and facilities that greatly expand Fallout 4's crafting system.
Unique Gear: "Legend of Vault 88"
After completing all experiments and successfully passing a dialogue challenge to persuade Overseer Barstow to remain in Vault 88, she will reward you with the unique Vault suit, "Legend of Vault 88." This suit boasts excellent stats: +15% Ghoul defense, +15 Radiation Resistance, and +15 Energy Resistance.
Complete Unlock of Vault Construction Items
Upon completing the quest, a vast array of Vault-specific construction parts, such as walls, floors, ceilings, doors, corridors, and stairs, will be added to your workshop. These parts can be used not only in Vault 88 but also in all other settlements, including Sanctuary Hills, allowing you to build your own Vault anywhere.
Special Facilities
- Various Prototype Devices: The Power Cycle 1000, Soda Fountain, Phoropter, and Slot Machine, with performance based on the parameters chosen in experiments, become permanently constructible.
- Vault Power Conduit: A convenient conduit that can be attached to Vault walls to supply power to the surroundings without using wires. This allows you to construct facilities with clean interiors without worrying about wiring.
- Barber and Plastic Surgery Stations: Facilities that allow you to change your character's hairstyle and appearance at any time become constructible.
- Population Management Terminal: A terminal that enables efficient instruction and tracking of residents. Managing large settlements becomes significantly easier.
Summary
Vault 88 is not just a new location; it's a massive sandbox designed to push Fallout 4's crafting and settlement management elements to their limits. The adventure of exploring and liberating vast underground spaces, the experiments as Overseer that determine the residents' future, and the creativity of building your ideal Vault from scratch. Packed with all of this, Vault 88 is a must-see content for all craft-loving players. Use this guide to aim to become the best Vault Overseer!
