SHAREXFacebookLINE

This article provides a strategy guide for Fallout 4's questlines. Fallout 4 is a single-player RPG and does not have regular seasonal updates. While a significant update for next-generation consoles was released on April 25, 2024, it does not include direct changes (to story, rewards, etc.) to the Railroad questline discussed in this article. Please use this information as current.

The Railroad is an underground intelligence organization working secretly in The Commonwealth to aid Synths. The path to oppose the Institute's oppression alongside them is filled with thrill and much conflict. This article provides a comprehensive guide from how to join the Railroad, through all main quest steps, critical story branching points, and the ending you'll experience with them. Furthermore, we'll cover the unlock conditions for the essential reward, "Ballistic Weave," and recommend character builds.

How to Join the Railroad: "Road to Freedom"

Contact with the Railroad begins with the "Road to Freedom" quest. This quest can be initiated by hearing rumors in Diamond City or by playing a specific holotape. The passphrase is "Railroad".

  1. Head to Boston Common and locate the red line painted on the ground, known as the "Freedom Trail".
  2. Follow this red line diligently, passing through various historical landmarks, aiming for the final destination: "Old North Church". Be sure to prepare for combat, as enemies will appear along the way.
  3. Enter the Old North Church and proceed into the underground. Your destination is a disc-shaped device called the "Freedom Trail Ring" located deep within the catacombs.
  4. Rotate the outer rim of the ring to align the letters and repeatedly press the central button. The password is "RAILROAD". Enter it one letter at a time.
  5. Once the password is correctly entered, a hidden door will open, revealing Desdemona and her team.

After your conversation with Desdemona, the next quest, "Tradecraft," will begin. By successfully completing this mission with the operative Deacon, you will be formally recognized as a member of the Railroad and gain free access to their headquarters.

Main Quest Progression Flow and Critical Branching Points

The Railroad quests are deeply intertwined with the actions of the Institute and the Brotherhood of Steel (B.O.S.), and your choices will significantly influence the future of The Commonwealth.

Early to Mid-Game: "Tradecraft" and the Infiltration Mission "Underground Undercover"

In "Tradecraft," the quest for formal membership, you will investigate the old headquarters with Deacon. Completing this quest grants you the high-performance unique pistol, "Deliverer." It comes standard with a suppressor, making it excellent for stealth play. Afterward, as you advance the main story and reach the inside of the Institute, the Railroad's most critical quest, "Underground Undercover," will automatically begin. This is a long-term mission to infiltrate the Institute and assist an ally (Patriot) from within to liberate Synths.

Most Critical Branching Point: Relationship with the Institute and B.O.S.

As the story progresses to the mid-game, the Institute quest "Mass Fusion" will appear. This marks the first major branching point in the Railroad route.

  • Cooperate with the Institute: If you use the relay device as instructed by the Institute and proceed with the "Mass Fusion" quest, you will become permanently hostile with the B.O.S. This is the official path to reach the ending via the Railroad route.
  • Report information to the B.O.S.: If you report the Institute's plan to Ingram of the B.O.S., the B.O.S. quest "Spoils of War" will begin, and you will be exiled from the Institute. Even if you choose this option, your cooperation with the Railroad can continue, but the story's progression will change significantly.

Important Note: If you advance the B.O.S. questline too far, the quest "Tactical Thinking," which makes you an enemy of the Railroad, will automatically begin. Once this quest starts, Railroad HQ members will be replaced by hostile NPCs, and there will be no turning back. Therefore, if you wish to pursue the Railroad route, exercise extreme caution with the B.O.S. quest progression.

Late Game: All-Out War and Institute Destruction

As you carry out the "Underground Undercover" mission and prepare for a Synth rebellion within the Institute, conflict with the Institute leadership will finally surface. From here, the story enters its final stages.

  1. Precipice of War: Your relationship with the Institute breaks down, and the Railroad HQ is attacked by the B.O.S. You will repel this attack with your allies.
  2. Rockets' Red Glare: This is a large-scale operation to destroy the B.O.S.'s colossal airship, the Prydwen. You will hijack a Vertibird, plant bombs on the Prydwen, and eliminate this massive threat from The Commonwealth's skies.
  3. The Nuclear Option (Railroad): This is the final quest for the Railroad route. While it shares some common elements with the Minutemen route, you will detonate the Institute's reactor with your Railroad companions, eradicating its existence completely.

The Railroad Route Ending and the Future of Synth Liberation

Upon completing the final quest, "The Nuclear Option (Railroad)," you will reach the Railroad ending. The Institute becomes a massive crater, and the B.O.S. is destroyed along with the Prydwen. With the two major factions, "the creators" and "the hunters" of Synths, gone, the Railroad's long-cherished wish for "Synth liberation" is achieved. In the post-completion world, the Railroad continues to operate as a major force in The Commonwealth, forming a coexistence with the Minutemen. You will likely see Railroad agents protecting Synths across various locations.

Helpful Perks / SPECIAL stats and Essential Rewards for Progression

Railroad quests often involve infiltration and stealth operations, making a character build specialized in these areas extremely effective.

Recommended Perks / SPECIAL stat Enhancements

Focus on enhancing Agility in your SPECIAL stats, as it directly impacts the success of stealth operations. The following Perks are particularly powerful:

  • Sneak: The foundation of stealth. You become harder to detect and will no longer trigger traps.
  • Mister Sandman: Significantly increases stealth damage with silenced weapons.
  • Ninja: Increases the damage multiplier for both melee and ranged stealth attacks.

Furthermore, since you will frequently need to unlock facilities and access terminals, acquiring high ranks in Perception's "Locksmith" and Intelligence's "Hacker" Perks will make progression much smoother.

Don't Miss It! The Most Powerful Modification: "Ballistic Weave"

One of the greatest advantages of cooperating with the Railroad is unlocking "Ballistic Weave," the most powerful clothing modification. This allows you to apply high damage and energy resistance to garments that normally cannot be worn with additional armor, such as tuxedos or military fatigues. The unlock procedure is as follows:

  1. After joining the Railroad, complete several side quests (such as cache retrieval) obtainable from the intelligence robot P.A.M.
  2. As you complete quests, Drummer Boy at headquarters will inform you that "P.A.M. wants to talk."
  3. Accept and complete the "Jackpot" quest from P.A.M.
  4. After completion, speak to Tinker Tom at Railroad HQ, and the topic of Ballistic Weave will come up, unlocking the modification.

This modification dramatically improves survivability, so be sure to unlock it.

[Bonus Section] Trinity Tower and Strong

While "Trinity Tower" is included in search topics, it is a location not directly related to the Railroad questline. The side quest "Curtain Call" begins by tuning into a radio broadcast near the tower. The tower is a lair for Super Mutants, and the objective is to rescue Rex Goodman, who is captured on the top floor, and the Super Mutant "Strong" who guards him. After completing the quest, Strong will join the player as a companion.

Summary

The Railroad questline is a particularly unique and profound story in Fallout 4, questioning "what it means to be human" through the existence of Synths. For players who enjoy stealth action and intelligence operations, it will be an excellent experience. Make your choices carefully at critical branching points, and maximize the use of powerful rewards like "Deliverer" and "Ballistic Weave" to secure freedom for the Synths. The future of The Commonwealth rests in your hands.
