Fallout 4 Lore: Nuclear War, Vault Secrets, and The Commonwealth's History

SHAREXFacebookLINE

Fallout 4 is a single-player game, so there is no seasonal system. The latest major update is the "Next-Gen Update," released on April 25 and May 13, 2024. This update primarily adds native support for next-gen consoles (PS5/Xbox Series X|S), performance and quality modes, ultrawide screen support, bug fixes, and new content (such as Enclave Remnants), but it does not change the core settings of the world or lore. This is the current information.

"War. War never changes." As you walk through the desolate world of Fallout 4, everyone will ponder the meaning of these words. Why was the world engulfed in nuclear fire, and why did people have to seek refuge in underground shelters called "Vault"? And what terrifying secrets were hidden within these Vaults? This article thoroughly unravels the grand history and mysteries of the world, detailing what happened in The Commonwealth during the 210 years until the protagonist awoke from cryosleep.

The Day the World Burned: "The Great War" and Pre-War History

The story of Fallout 4 begins in 2287 in The Commonwealth (the area of pre-war Massachusetts). However, to understand the origin of this desolate world, we must rewind the clock over 200 years and learn about the history before 2077, when the nuclear war known as "The Great War" erupted.

Historical Divergence and Retro-Futuristic Culture

The Fallout timeline diverged from our reality after World War II. While the invention of the transistor was delayed, nuclear technology advanced dramatically. "Atomic-powered cars" and "household helper robots like Mr. Handy" became widespread, and people believed in a brilliant future. The 1950s-style retro-futuristic culture, exemplified by in-game posters and "Nuka-Cola" designs, emerged from this unique historical background. However, behind this gleaming culture, a catastrophic global crisis was quietly unfolding.

The Resource Wars and Escalating US-China Conflict

In the mid-21st century, as the world's primary resource, oil, began to deplete, "Resource Wars" erupted as nations vied for control. The conflict between the United States and China became particularly severe, escalating into a massive military clash known as the "Anchorage Front," fought over the last remaining oil fields in Alaska. In this war, America barely secured victory by deploying prototypes of the infantry nuclear weapon "Nuka-Launcher" and the invincible armored weapon "T-51 Power Armor." However, the animosity between the two nations became absolute.
Then, on October 23, 2077, the tension finally snapped. Nuclear-armed nations, including the US and China, mutually launched nuclear missiles. In just two hours, world civilization collapsed, and the Earth's surface transformed into a radiation-contaminated "Wasteland." This became a major turning point in human history, later known as "The Great War."

Deception in the Name of Human Salvation: Vault-Tec's Terrifying Experiments

In response to the looming threat of nuclear war, the US government contracted Vault-Tec to promote "Project Safehouse," which involved building massive underground shelters called "Vaults" across the nation to protect citizens from nuclear threats. However, this was a deceptive plan meant to reassure the public. Its true purpose was to observe humans in isolated environments and conduct inhumane social experiments.

Stated Purpose and Hidden Truth

Out of the 122 Vaults built across the US, only 17 functioned as pure shelters, known as "Control Vaults." The vast majority of the remaining Vaults had specific experimental objectives assigned to them. These experimental data were planned to be collected and analyzed by "The Enclave," an elite government group aiming to dominate the post-war world. Vault-Tec, while claiming to act for the future of humanity, treated people as guinea pigs, recording their behavior and psychology.

Records of Vaults Hidden in The Commonwealth

Several experimental Vaults also exist in The Commonwealth, the setting of Fallout 4. Holotapes and terminal records found in-game quietly tell their tragic history.

  • Vault 111: The Vault where the protagonist sought refuge with their family. Its experimental purpose was "observation of the effects of long-term cryopreservation technology on the human body." All residents, except staff, were placed into cryosleep pods under the pretense of maintenance and would remain asleep for over 200 years.
  • Vault 75: Hidden beneath Malden Middle School, this Vault conducted experiments aimed at "human genetic enhancement." Resident children were separated from their parents and subjected to rigorous physical and mental training. The word "Graduation" left on terminals hints at the tragic fate of the young subjects.
  • Vault 81: Ostensibly, it had the noble goal of "developing cures for all diseases." However, its true nature was a cruel experiment to secretly release pathogens among residents in the living quarters and observe their treatment process from an isolated research section. Fortunately, due to the conscience of the first Overseer, the experiment was not carried out, and the residents maintain a relatively peaceful community. It is also where the companion "Curie" is encountered.
  • Vault 95: People were gathered under the guise of a rehabilitation facility for drug addicts. They were allowed to live peacefully for five years, but on the fifth-year anniversary, large quantities of drugs (such as Jet and Psycho) were supplied from a hidden safe. It was an extremely morbid experiment to observe how people who supposedly overcame addiction would react.
  • Vault 114: Located beneath Park Street Station, it intentionally gathered social elites and wealthy individuals and forced them to live in a crude, private-less, and substandard environment. Furthermore, by appointing an individual with no authority as Overseer, the goal was to observe human authoritarianism and changes in social structure under extreme conditions.

Awakening After 200 Years: Post-War Commonwealth and Four Factions

When the protagonist awoke from cryosleep in Vault 111 in 2287, The Commonwealth had become a lawless land. Mutated creatures roamed freely due to radiation, and the surviving people barely lived in small settlements. Amidst this, four major factions, holding the power to shape The Commonwealth's future, fiercely clash, each upholding their own ideals.

The Institute: Scientific Pursuit and Synths

A mysterious organization founded underground by surviving scientists from the prestigious pre-war university "C.I.T." They advocate for "redefining humanity" and develop and manufacture highly sophisticated artificial humans, "Synths," who are indistinguishable from real people. While feared by surface dwellers as "kidnappers" and "unknown mutants / creatures," they themselves believe their scientific technology is the only path to saving humanity. They are the ones who abducted the protagonist's son, Shaun, and raised him as the organization's leader, "Father."

Brotherhood of Steel (B.O.S.): Technology Management and Threat Elimination

A powerful military organization that arrived in The Commonwealth aboard the colossal airship "The Prydwen." Their supreme objective is to prevent the misuse of advanced pre-war technology and eradicate threats to humanity (Super Mutants, Feral Ghouls, and The Institute's Synths). Led by the charismatic Elder Maxson, their disciplined and orderly presence is reassuring, but their dogmatic and exclusive ideology creates many conflicts.

The Railroad: An Underground Organization Advocating Synth Liberation

A secret society that recognizes Synths, treated as "slaves" by The Institute, as individuals and works to liberate them. They established their headquarters at the end of the "Freedom Trail" and use their own intelligence network and safe houses to aid persecuted Synths. They are directly opposed to The Institute and B.O.S., and the protagonist may undertake dangerous missions as their spy.

The Minutemen: Reconstruction by the People, for the People

Once a militia organized to protect the people of The Commonwealth, it had fallen into disarray due to internal conflicts and an event known as "The Quincy Massacre." Along with Preston Garvey, whom they meet in Concord, the protagonist rebuilds the Minutemen as their "General," helping settlements across the region and building a network of mutual cooperation. Without adhering to any specific ideology, they fight solely for the safety and future of the people, making them a beacon of hope for The Commonwealth.

Conclusion

The appeal of Fallout 4 isn't just its gameplay, allowing free exploration of a vast Wasteland. Beneath it lies a profound story, intricately weaving a weighty history of why the world collapsed, the inhumane experiments hidden by Vault-Tec, and the ideologies of people surviving in a desolate world.
The Institute's science, B.O.S.'s order, The Railroad's freedom, The Minutemen's mutual aid. Which faction will you side with, and how will you guide the future of The Commonwealth? This crucial choice is entirely in your hands, the player. We hope this article helps make your journey through the Wasteland deeper and more meaningful.
