Dragon Quest 3: Solo Hero's Secret Guide to Defeat Baramos

SHAREXFacebookLINE

Can't Defeat Baramos in DQ3? Solo Hero's Secret Strategy!

Have you ever knelt before the Great Demon Lord Baramos, seated on his throne, no matter how many times you challenged him? That despair when the Priest's Revive runs out, the Sage's Healall isn't fast enough, and your companions successively turn into tombstones. You are not the only Hero whose spirit was almost broken by such an insurmountable wall, bearing the hopes of Aliahan's people. But what if there was a way to overcome that despair all by yourself? What if there was a path to weave a legend without losing a single companion? This is a guide to forbidden victory, attainable only by the lone Hero.

The Forbidden Tactic: Defeating Baramos Alone

“Defeating Baramos with just the Hero”—at first glance, it might sound like a reckless challenge run. However, this is no mere self-satisfying feat. It's a highly rational tactic that leverages the systems of Dragon Quest 3. A four-person party certainly offers high firepower and role distribution. But Baramos's relentless assaults, especially full-party attacks like Explodet and Blazefire, can instantly deplete the entire party's HP, making a continuous healing loop the biggest reason for being worn down. Furthermore, the despair when a companion is blown away by Whack is immeasurable.

But what if it's just the Hero? You only need to heal yourself. There are no companions to protect. And Whack is completely nullified. Every action can be optimized solely for your own survival and victory. This isn't a battle where you abandon your allies. It's the Hero's determined strategy to keep companions out of harm's way. The method for defeating Baramos that we're about to introduce will be a silent yet intense clash of souls, on a completely different level from party battles.

Gear and Items: All You Need to Prepare

When embarking on a solitary decisive battle, the selection of gear and items is a matter of life and death. Incomplete preparation means instant demise. But conversely, if you can perfectly assemble the following arsenal, the light of victory will surely become visible.

  • Weapon: Sword of Ramias
A Hero-exclusive weapon obtainable from a treasure chest in Baramos Castle. When used as an item, it produces an effect equivalent to Boom, but in this strategy, it's chosen purely for its high attack power to conserve MP.
  • Armor: Blade Armor
The strongest piece of armor and the core of this strategy. Beyond its defensive power, what's remarkable is its effect to reflect half of the damage back to the enemy when a physical attack is received. Baramos's fierce blows will return as our own blade. This reflected damage is the primary means of attack without using MP.
  • Shield: Hero's Shield
The ultimate shield found in the Necrogond Cave. Its effect to reduce fire and ice breath damage by two-thirds is essential for countering Baramos's "Blazefire."
  • Helmet: Iron Mask
The strongest helmet at this point. Purely boosts defense, reducing damage taken even slightly increases survival rate.
  • Accessory: Starfall Gauntlet
A miraculous bracelet that doubles agility. Whether you can get the first move against Baramos greatly affects the timing of your healing. Be sure to equip it to consistently cast Healmore first.

The items you bring must also be carefully selected. Do not clutter your item slots with Medicinal Herbs or Holy Waters.

  • Prayer Ring: 5-6 pieces
Your lifeline for MP recovery. Essential for continuously casting Healmore. Bring multiple, anticipating they might break.
  • Yggdrasil Leaf: 1 piece
A charm in case you are defeated by a critical hit. Ideally, you won't use it, but just having it brings peace of mind.

That's all. No Medicinal Herbs or Antidotal Herbs are needed. Like a sharpened blade, only perfect preparation will support the lone Hero.

Essential Leveling for Entering the Zone

No matter how perfect your equipment, a fragile body cannot withstand the Great Demon Lord's fierce attacks. To succeed with this solo Hero strategy, you'll ideally want to be around Level 38-40. HP is especially crucial. Without enough stamina to withstand Baramos's two attacks plus a critical hit, victory is impossible.

The sacred ground for leveling up is, as you know, around Rimuldar. Continue hunting the "Metal Slime" that appear there. It might be a monotonous and sometimes painful task. But this isn't just leveling up. It's a 'ritual' to sharpen your mind and heighten your concentration to the extreme for the upcoming decisive battle. With each Metal Slime you defeat and each experience point gained, your sword will grow sharper, and your heart will transform into unwavering steel. This solitary time will elevate you to a true Hero.

Tactics for Victory Without Attack Spells

The decisive battle has begun. From here, not a moment of carelessness can be afforded. All MP is reserved for the healing spell 'Healmore.' Discard any urge to cast Thordain or Kazap. Our attacks consist solely of regular attacks and reflected damage from the 'Blade Armor.'

The strategy is surprisingly simple, yet profound.

  1. Always keep your HP near full. If you take damage from Baramos, cast Healmore without hesitation on the next turn. Consider situations where your HP drops below 200 as dangerous territory. With the Starfall Gauntlet's agility, you should almost always be able to heal first.
  2. Attacks are regular attacks only. To avoid MP consumption, do not use the Sword of Ramias as an item. Even if the damage per hit is small, continue to chip away steadily.
  3. Trust the Blade Armor. Every time Baramos chooses a physical attack, you take damage, but simultaneously land a counter-attack. This quiet war of attrition is the true essence of this strategy. The moment you become impatient and try to rely on a powerful spell, you will be caught off guard.
  4. Endure Fuddle. If you get confused, you can only leave it to fate. However, the Blade Armor's reflection effect still activates even when confused. Remember that even in the worst situation, the path to victory is not completely closed.

It's not a flurry of dazzling effects. It's a back-and-forth battle, managing HP and MP, gradually chipping away at the opponent's life. It's like a quiet, intellectual deathmatch, as a seasoned shogi player searches for the checkmate. When you master this ultimate method of defeat, you will glimpse the depths of Dragon Quest 3's combat system.

Towards a Moving Ending Where No Ally Dies

After a long, arduous deathmatch, the Great Demon Lord Baramos finally collapses. The fanfare of victory rings out. But no one is around you. No companions to celebrate with, no Priest to heal you. You stand alone, savoring the afterglow of victory in silence. For this moment, we walked a solitary path.

Upon your triumphant return to Aliahan Castle, the King's words will deeply resonate within your heart. A Hero who saved the world alone, without sacrificing any companions. It's an 'IF' legend, slightly different from the original story, woven solely by you. The vow to 'not let companions die' was fulfilled in the ultimate form of not bringing them into the party. The taste of this solitary victory will be a bittersweet yet proud one, something that can never be experienced in a normal playthrough.

But the story doesn't end yet. This victory is merely the prelude to a grand legend. When true darkness covers the world, reliable companions will surely be by your side. With the absolute confidence and resolve gained from the Baramos battle, press onward towards the true ending.
