Baldur's Gate 3: Mintara Recruitment & Romance Guide (Good Route Included)
Baldur's Gate 3 does not have a season system. The latest major patch is "Patch 6," which included additional revisions to Mintara's recruitment methods. Hotfixes have continued to be released since then, with Hotfix #36 launching on March 26, 2026. This article is based on the current most up-to-date information.
Mintara, the ruthless Drow commander, was once only recruitable by choosing an evil path. However, an update has made it possible to welcome her into your party while pursuing a righteous path—a previously unimaginable gameplay style. This significantly expands the narrative scope, offering many players the opportunity to experience her complex charm. This article thoroughly explains everything about Mintara, from the detailed steps for the "good-aligned route" (saving the Emerald Grove while recruiting her) to methods for increasing her approval and pursuing a passionate romance.
Mintara's Basic Information and Characteristics
Mintara is a Lolth-sworn Drow woman who appears in Act 1's Goblin Camp as one of the commanders of the Absolute. Her initial class is a 'Vengeance' Paladin, wielding powerful melee attacks and divine magic. Her personality is cold and ambitious, and she thoroughly despises weakness and hesitation. However, as the story progresses, her complex inner self is revealed, including a past suffering under the Absolute's mind control and struggles after being freed from its influence. Depending on player choices, she can break her oath and change class to a powerful "Oathbreaker."
How to Recruit Mintara [Route-Specific Explanation]
There are largely two routes to recruit Mintara, depending on your playstyle. While previously only an evil-aligned route existed, recruiting her through a good-aligned route became possible after Patch 5.
[Recommended] Good-Aligned Route (Compatible with Halsin)
This is currently the most recommended route, allowing you to save the Emerald Grove and recruit Mintara while preventing Wyll and Karlach from leaving your party. It requires a specific procedure, so you must proceed carefully.
- Step 1: Make her temporarily hostile
In Act 1, head to the "Shattered Sanctum" at the back of the Goblin Camp. In the room where Mintara is, absolutely do not speak to her. Make Mintara "temporarily hostile" by stealing an item within her line of sight or attacking a nearby goblin. - Step 2: Render her temporarily Incapacitated with a non-lethal attack
Activate "non-lethal attacks" from the passive menu at the bottom of the screen. In this state, use only melee weapons (magic and ranged attacks are not allowed) to reduce Mintara's Hit Points (HP) to 0. If successful, she will not die but will be "temporarily Incapacitated." - Step 3: Defeat the other Goblin Leaders
Defeat the remaining Goblin Leaders, "Dror Ragzlin" and "Priestess Gut," and rescue the captive Halsin. Afterwards, return to the Emerald Grove and report your victory to the Tieflings. - Step 4: Reunite and Rescue her in Moonrise Towers
Proceed to Act 2 and follow the main quest to "Moonrise Towers." In the throne room, you will encounter Ketheric Thorm interrogating Mintara for her failed mission. Defend her and plead for her life through the dialogue options, and she will be escorted to the dungeons below. - Step 5: Official recruitment at Camp
In the dungeons, defeat the torturers and rescue Mintara. Either escape the tower with her or send her to a safe location first. Afterwards, speak with Mintara at your camp, and she will officially join your party as a companion. The greatest advantage of this route is that you can recruit both Halsin and Mintara.
Evil-Aligned Route (Traditional Route)
This is the traditional recruitment method, which results in significant story branching.
- In Act 1, cooperate with Mintara in the Goblin Camp and participate in the plan to raid the Emerald Grove.
- After massacring the Druids and Tieflings, a celebration feast will be held in the Goblin Camp that night. Speak with Mintara here to spend the night with her and begin a romance.
- Afterwards, you will reunite with her in Act 2's Moonrise Towers, and she will officially join your party.
Important Note: Choosing this route will cause the righteous Wyll and Karlach to permanently leave your party, and Halsin will also not join you, naturally. You must be prepared to steer the story significantly towards an evil path.
How to Increase Mintara's Approval?
To earn Mintara's trust, it is crucial to understand her values. She respects strength and decisiveness, and despises sympathy for the weak or indecisiveness.
Actions She Approves / Disapproves Of
| Actions/Choices She Approves Of | Actions/Choices She Disapproves Of |
|---|---|
| Display decisive leadership | Show unnecessary mercy to the weak or defeated |
| Affirm power and ruthlessly defeat enemies | Indecisive behavior or hesitation |
| Agree with ambitious plans or domineering choices | Blindly obey authority (especially figures like Vlaakith) |
| Understand her past (Absolute's control) and praise her current strength | Show excessive sympathy for children or animals |
| Agree with pragmatic opinions like Astarion's or Lae'zel's | Spending time on things she deems meaningless |
Key Points for Increasing Approval
- Display a resolute attitude: In dialogue options, always choose a confident and resolute attitude. Vague responses or being swayed by others' opinions will lower her opinion of you.
- Affirm power: Choices that allow you to overwhelm enemies in combat or intimidate opponents in negotiations will significantly increase her approval. She values results, regardless of the methods used.
- Empathize with her past: When she confides in you about her suffering under the Absolute's control, rather than sympathizing, praise her strength in overcoming that experience. Words like "You are not a puppet" are effective.
- Act with pragmatic companions: Agreeing with the opinions of pragmatic characters like Astarion and Lae'zel, who will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, also tends to increase Mintara's approval.
Mintara's Romance and Personal Quest
Mintara's romance is passionate, but it is a serious one that demands an exclusive relationship.
Romance Activation Conditions and Progression
- Starting Timing: In the evil-aligned route, it begins in Act 1 during the celebration feast after the raid on the Emerald Grove, by choosing options like "I am yours, Mintara" when she invites you. In the good-aligned route, romance can progress after you rescue her and recruit her to your party in Act 2.
- Progression Conditions: The most important factor is high approval. Speak with her regularly at camp and trigger special events. In particular, scenes where she speaks about her memories of when she was controlled by the Absolute are crucial for deepening your relationship.
- Becoming Lovers: When she reveals her inner self and shows her trust in you, choosing options like "I want to be by your side" or "I accept you as my lover" will officially enter you into a romantic relationship.
- Important Note: Mintara does not tolerate polyamory (multiple relationships). If you are in a romantic relationship with another companion, you will be forced to choose one. To continue your relationship with her, you must end other romances.
Personal Quest and Ending
Mintara does not have a distinct personal quest journal entry, but her story centers around 'complete liberation from the Absolute's control and finding a new purpose.' Exploring Baldur's Gate with her in Act 3 will trigger numerous conversations where you learn about her past and her views on Drow society. To achieve the best ending, you must keep her in your party until the final battle and fight alongside you against the Netherbrain. In the ending, she is completely freed from the shackles of her past and powerfully declares her intention to build a future with you. You will witness an ending characteristic of her, standing beside you as an equal partner while respecting your choices.
[Advanced] How to Make Mintara an Oathbreaker
Mintara's initial class is a 'Vengeance' Paladin, but by player choices, she can break her oath and become an "Oathbreaker." This is an interesting element that further deepens her character.
One example of breaking the oath occurs in Act 3's quest "Punish the Wicked." In this quest, if you choose to forgive Madeline, who committed serial murders, instead of punishing her, Mintara breaks her Oath of Vengeance. However, she herself views this change positively. Now freed from both the Absolute and Lolth, she believes there is no need to be bound by old oaths and may even encourage you (if you are a Paladin) to break your oath. This is a testament to her breaking from the past and choosing her own future by her own will.
Summary
Despite her cold exterior, Mintara is a truly captivating character with a complex background as a victim of the Absolute's mind control. Since Patch 5, the ability to recruit her even in a good-aligned playthrough has allowed more players to experience her story. By making the strong decisions she prefers and understanding her past pain, she will become a more loyal and passionate companion and lover than anyone else. Refer to this guide to enjoy a thrilling adventure and romance with the ruthless Drow commander.
