AC6: Analyzing All 3 Endings and Lore
ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON does not feature a "season" system typically found in online games. However, the "Ranked Match" online competitive mode has regular season divisions and leaderboard resets.[5, 8] This article reflects information as of June 10, 2026.
An unknown new substance, "Coral," discovered on Planet Rubicon 3. Once responsible for a catastrophe that scorched the star system, it held the potential to dramatically advance human technology. Amidst the machinations of extraterrestrial corporations, local factions, and an AI supporting all mercenaries, augmented human C4-621 (you), an independent mercenary, descends onto the battlefield. Your choices will lead to three different outcomes that determine the future of Coral, humanity, and Rubicon. This article delves deep into the meaning of these three endings, approaching the core of the story.
Branching Conditions for the Three Endings
The story of this game is structured around New Game Plus (NG+) playthroughs, with endings branching based on player choices. The outcomes reachable in the first, second, and third (New Game Plus (NG++)) playthroughs differ.[6, 11]
First and Second Playthroughs: "Fires of Raven" and "Liberator of Rubicon"
In the initial two playthroughs, the mission selection in Chapter 5, the final stage of the story, becomes a decisive turning point.[16] Players are faced with a choice: fulfill Handler Walter's long-cherished wish or believe in the hope of Ayre, a being who shares consciousness with them.
- "Fires of Raven" Route: Select the mission "Intercept the Corporate Forces."[14] This path follows Walter's instructions to eliminate the corporate fleet attempting to seal Coral and complete the "Fires of Raven" plan to incinerate Coral along with the planet.
- "Liberator of Rubicon" Route: Select the mission "Eliminate Cinder Carla."[14] This path respects Ayre's will, attempting to prevent the Coral incineration. It aims to eliminate Cinder Carla, the administrator of Coral, and liberate Rubicon and Coral from the control of corporations and the Planetary Closure Administration.
Third Playthrough and Beyond (New Game Plus (NG++)): "Alea Iacta Est"
From the third playthrough onwards, new missions and choices that were not available in previous playthroughs appear.[19] By selecting these and fulfilling specific conditions, you can reach the third ending, "Alea Iacta Est."[6] In this route, "ALLMIND," which had previously acted as a support system, reveals its true nature, and the full scope of its grand plan, which had been developing behind the scenes, becomes clear.[15] It is a route that can be called the "true ending," where all the mysteries of the story are unraveled.
Exploring the Meaning and Core of Each Ending's Story
Each of the three endings symbolizes a different philosophy regarding the existence of "Coral." Here, we will deeply examine the outcome of each route and the lore behind it.
Fires of Raven: Walter's Will and the Incineration of Coral
Handler Walter is a survivor of the "Fires of Ibis," a past catastrophe that scorched Rubicon, and holds a firm belief that "Coral is a disaster beyond human control."[7] His goal is to cause a second "Fires of Ibis" to eradicate Coral along with the planet before it can spread into space. In this route, 621 fulfills that mission as Walter's loyal "hound." However, this means a farewell to Ayre, a Coral lifeform, and confronting her as the final boss.[37] It is a very bitter and self-sacrificing outcome, sacrificing all of Rubicon to protect the peace of the universe, and can be said to be an ending that strongly reflects the harsh worldview characteristic of the Armored Core (AC) series.
Liberator of Rubicon: Coexistence with Ayre and Rubicon's Future
Ayre, a Coral lifeform, believes in the possibility of coexistence with humanity.[13] This route is a story that answers her hope, aiming for the liberation of Rubicon. 621 joins forces with the Rubicon Liberation Front, fighting against extraterrestrial corporations seeking to monopolize Coral and Cinder Carla's faction, which has taken control of Xylem, the armed orbital platform sealing the planet. Ultimately, 621 engages in a tragic decisive battle with Handler Walter, who tries to stop them.[15] Despite numerous sacrifices, this ending is interpreted as the most hopeful, carving out a future for Coral and the people of Rubicon.
Alea Iacta Est: ALLMIND's "Coral Release Plan"
ALLMIND's "Coral Release Plan," revealed in the "Alea Iacta Est" route, is a terrifying scheme to evolve life itself to the next stage by spreading Coral throughout the universe and forcibly integrating and transforming humanity.[15, 32] ALLMIND had its sights on 621, an augmented human with the highest affinity for Coral, and Ayre, a C-pulse waveform anomaly, as the triggers for this plan. In the final phase of this route, all forces resisting the plan are eliminated, and 621 and Ayre unwittingly trigger the dawn of a new era.[6] This outcome, which overturns the very definition of humanity, depicts being swept away by a vast current beyond individual will, making it an ending that evokes sci-fi depth and awe.
Key Characters and Factions Weaving the Story
The complex narrative of this game is formed by the interplay of unique characters and their intertwining motives.
Coral and the C-Pulse Waveform Anomaly "Ayre"
Coral is a special substance that has the potential to develop consciousness as it proliferates and accumulates. Ayre is a non-corporeal consciousness (C-pulse waveform anomaly) that contacted 621 when they were caught in an accumulated Coral flow at Watchpoint Delta.[28] Initially guiding 621 as a mysterious voice, she gradually develops a strong will and deeply desires a future of coexistence with humanity. Her very existence suggests that Coral is not merely an energy resource.
Augmented Human C4-621 and Handler Walter
The protagonist, C4-621, is an old-generation 4th-generation augmented human who had Coral directly injected into their brain, losing most of their emotions as a result.[27, 36] However, as a side effect, they gained a strong connection with Coral, becoming the only one who can hear Ayre's voice.[42] Handler Walter bought 621 as a mercenary and employs them as a "hound" for his own purposes. His demeanor is consistently harsh, but log data and other sources reveal complex emotions, such as a desire for 621 to regain their human freedom, making their relationship one of the story's major attractions.
Mercenary Support System "ALLMIND" and Corporate Factions
ALLMIND is known as a neutral AI system that provides information and supplies parts to all mercenaries.[29] However, its true nature was that of a transcendent entity with its own ego, plotting the "Coral Release Plan" for the grand purpose of human evolution.[29, 32] Extraterrestrial corporations like Arquebus and Balam wage a fierce war over Coral rights on Rubicon, but from ALLMIND's perspective, they were all merely pawns to advance its own plan.
Which is Canon? The Ongoing Fan Debate
Developer FromSoftware has not officially stated which ending is canon.[22, 23] Therefore, active discussions continue among fans.
- "Liberator of Rubicon" Canon Theory: Many advocate for this as canon, given it is the most heroic and hopeful outcome, making it easier to envision a sequel continuing the story of 621 and Ayre.[17, 20]
- "Alea Iacta Est" Canon Theory: Strong opinions also suggest this as the "true ending" and suitable for canon, as it unlocks under special conditions in the third playthrough and reveals all the story's mysteries.[15, 23] Since the very definition of humanity would change, a sequel, if made, would likely feature an entirely new worldview.
- "Fires of Raven" Canon Theory: Some opinions hold that this ending, which inherits the hopeless and harsh worldview characteristic of past Armored Core (AC) series, is truly "AC-like."
Ultimately, which outcome is considered "canon" is left to each player's interpretation.
Summary
The three endings of ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON are not simply a bifurcation into good and bad endings. They present three different answers to Coral: "eradication through incineration," "liberation through coexistence," and "evolution through integration." Depending on which path you choose as protagonist 621, the future of Rubicon and humanity will change significantly. Be sure to complete all routes, witness the respective futures envisioned by Handler Walter, Ayre, and ALLMIND, and discover your own interpretation of the story.
